Molly’s POV
The atmosphere in the mansion shifted whenever Gianni was absent. Knocking on Roger’s door, I received no response, so I cautiously opened it, only to be met with a wave of fear that gripped my heart.
“It’s not a joke, Roger,” I pleaded, feeling vulnerable and at his mercy as I quickly shut the door.
“Come in,” his voice called from inside, but as I entered, something suddenly covered my face, causing me to scream in terror. Thankfully, Jace swiftly came to my rescue, removing the spider that had startled me.
My heart raced uncontrollably. “Thank you, Jace.”
“It’s no problem, ma’am. I’m here to help.”
I glanced around at Roger’s chaotic collection of pets, feeling queasy. I hurried to the bathroom, emptying the contents of my stomach. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and the boy had frightened me to the core.
This wasn’t the first time, but without Gianni, the house felt menacing, bringing back memories of what Roger had done to me on my first night.
“Ma'am, would you like me to call Don?" Jace asked when I returned from puking as Roger was laughing like it was the most interesting thing.
I shook my head. If I couldn't handle this, I would just be useless and wasting his money.
"No, he's just a kid. I can handle him. Let me go make dinner."
"The chef has already cooked," one of the maids said. It was the first time any of them had spoken to me, and another one smirked.
"I guess another nanny will be gone in a week." It was clear that this was how Roger got rid of all his nannies, but my situation was different. Even if I tried, Gianni would not let me go yet.
"Roger, let me help you with your shower, or I'll call your dad."
I didn't realize I had dialed Gianni's number until I heard his voice, right after the first maid taunted.
"This nanny doesn't know her job. She only wants the boss's attention."
The words hit deep, and somehow, I knew she was right. I knew nothing about being a nanny, and Roger was not making it easy for me.
Molly, what's the problem?" I heard Gianni's voice, but it sounded different, as if he was preoccupied.
"Gianni, are you okay? You sound strange," I remarked, noticing a distant quality in his voice as if he was talking to someone else.
"Enough," he abruptly interrupted the conversation in the background before returning to me. "I asked, is everything alright?"
Before I could respond, a female voice chimed in. "Don, we..."
"I said, enough. Now get out," Gianni's tone was firm, indicating he was dealing with something urgent. Not wanting to intrude, I decided not to press further.
"It's nothing. I accidentally called your number," I explained, seeing a hint of disappointment in Jace's eyes, but I felt it was best to handle the situation alone. However, Gianni seemed skeptical.
"Is Roger causing trouble?"
“No, no," I attempted to remain calm as Roger refused to cage his pets, preventing me from entering his room.
"It's okay," I assured him before ending the call. He called again, but I hesitated to answer as the maids gave me strange looks.
"She has a pet name for the boss," one of the maids whispered.
I ended the call and sent him a text message: 'Gianni, there is no problem.'
Jace's phone rang, and he excused himself for a moment. As I composed myself, I suggested,
"Just take a shower, then we can eat and work on your homework together. And if you'd like, we can do something fun afterwards."
A mischievous smile spread across his face at my proposal. "Do something together?"
"Yes, I agree," I confirmed.
"Okay, help me shower, and then we can do what I want," he teased.
I knew it wasn't wise to make any deals with this mischievous child, but I was eager to build a connection with him and ease Gianni's concerns.
After securing his pets in their cages, I helped clean up for him, even though it wasn't part of my job while he was in the shower. Since he didn't like people, I thought it was best to supervise his shower, and he was doing quite well.
Once I finished tidying up his room, I checked on his progress in the shower and noticed a few missed spots, assisting him before letting him choose his own pajamas.
He opted for a pair with spiders on them that resembled Spider-Man, so they weren't too scary.
The chef's food was delicious, and Roger ate without any complaints. "Jace, you should eat too," I suggested to the bodyguard, but he politely declined, mentioning that he had his meals in his room.
I assumed there were rules I wasn't aware of, so I didn't press the issue.
As we wrapped up the meal, a cold excitement gleamed in Roger's eyes. "Are you ready for my game? If you can handle Ghost, then we can be friends."
The name sounded familiar. Wasn't Ghost his white snake? What had I gotten myself into?
“I can't do that?" I refused, but he was upset, and so was I.
"I hate you. You lied to me. Now leave our house. You are not welcome here," he said.
I saw the maids laughing, but suddenly they composed themselves, and it didn't take long to know why.
