Molly’s POV
I was chasing after Roger, the most important part being to keep him safe. He hadn’t been to a pack before but seemed to know his way around. The most difficult part was keeping up with his pace.
My heart rate kept increasing with every attempt to match Roger's speed. "Can you stop? I'm tired," I said breathlessly, but he kept running and talking.
"A little bit more, Molly. We can find a place to hide until the bad guys leave."
It felt strange when he called me by my name after referring to me as mom since we arrived, seeming like Roger was longing for his mother when he called me that.
As a school with kids discussing both parents, I understood how challenging it could be for him to only mention one parent constantly.
However, I was relieved to have released some of my anger on Kiara for all the damage she caused in my life.
The songs she stole from me, thinking I was unaware, and still profiting from them, made me want to confront her, especially after she denied my parents' legacy.
If Roger hadn't alerted me about those men he called bad guys, I might have faced legal consequences for my actions against Kiara because I didn’t care if she died in my hands.
The Park was getting dark, and the streetlights were on.
Roger and I stopped under a large tree. "We can rest here. They won't find us, and we can see if anyone is approaching,” Roger suggested, lowering himself to a sitting position.
He seemed so composed that I asked him, "Are you sure you've never been to the park?" I sat beside him, trying to catch my breath.
Afraid he might run off again, I placed my stilettos aside, lifted him onto my lap, and positioned him between my thighs, holding him securely with his back against me.
I was grateful I wore a pantsuit to the office that day. "I've read about parks in books and watched a few movies. Dad and Uncle Hank taught me survival techniques. If you can't fight the bad guys, run and find a safe place to hide," he advised.
How weird it felt to receive survival ideas from a four-year-old.
At first, I thought Gianni was being too hard on him, but after hearing this, I had to compliment his parenting skills because Roger helped us escape. There was no way I could have stood up against those men. But then, what about Jace?
I immediately tried to reach for my phone before I realized I had left it in the car. I hadn’t taken it along to avoid being tempted to take pictures, as Gianni had forbidden us from coming here.
“We have to go back. Jace would be worried,” I said, Roger remained calm. “Don’t worry, Molly. Jace will find us.”
Roger made me feel like the mother I never was, and as little as he was, talking to him was like talking to a teenager.
As it started getting cold, he began curling up in my arms. I removed my blazer and covered him with it when he suddenly said, “Molly, I’m scared.”
His vulnerability caught me off guard, considering how he constantly put on a strong front. “What are you afraid of?”
“Dad, he’ll be upset that I disobeyed him.”
I shared his fear, knowing Gianni would be disappointed in me and might not trust me again. But right now, my focus was on keeping Roger calm. If Jace couldn’t find us, we might have to find our way back to the car.
Lost in my thoughts, I began to hum a song. “Meeting you changed my life, and I hope one day you know just how much I love you. Your wild yet loving nature drives me crazy all the time, but I have never felt as at peace as I do right now with you in my arms.”
As the rhythm synched with my voice, I began to sing, though undertone, Roger froze in my arms.
“Molly, is the song dedicated to me?” He turned to face me, and I nodded. “Yes.”
He embraced me tightly. “Your voice is amazing, much better than most of those stars I hear singing every day.”
His words brought tears to my eyes as I whispered, "I used to be a star before, but it's better like this."
"If I had a voice like yours, nothing would stop me from letting the world hear it. I would always use it as a comeback," Roger said dreamily, and I realized he was dozing off.
Adjusting him to a comfortable position, I covered him and leaned my head against his back, closing my eyes. When I opened them, I found myself back in my room, on my bed.
"How did I get here?" I wondered, but then I noticed Roger peacefully asleep beside me. What was happening?
Checking the time, I saw it was an hour before Roger's usual waking time. I decided to go work out a little and think of the best excuse to give Gianni. However, when I reached the gym, I found Gianni already there.
My heart sank as he asked, "Care to explain why you took Roger to the park?"
Before I could respond, a soft voice interjected, "It was my fault, Dad. But Molly was so cool. She beat Wade's mom, and she sings like an angel. Dad, why not make Molly a star?"
Yesterday may have felt like a dream, but this was reality. Was Roger finally on warming up to me?
