Chloe Evans hit the pavement hard, her humiliation complete. "Ahhh! Sophia Roscente and her disgusting boyfriend are assaulting me!" she screamed, her voice shrill with hysteria.
Before I could process the scene, a warm palm covered my ear. My face pressed against Ryan's solid chest, his heartbeat steady beneath my cheek. My entire body burned like a lobster in boiling water.
"She's mine." His deep voice rumbled through his chest, each word carrying unshakable conviction. "Touch her, and you deal with me."
For years, I'd been Ethan's protector, weathering every storm for him. But wrapped in Ryan's arms, I finally understood what it meant to let someone else be your shelter.
With Chloe as my enemy now, keeping my job was impossible. Ryan marched straight to the manager to handle my resignation. The man took one look at Ryan's barely-contained fury and didn't dare argue—just shot me a dirty look before rushing through my final paycheck.
Back in Ryan's SUV, reality came crashing down. My job—gone. My reputation in town—destroyed. Who knew what rumors were already spreading?
The tears came then, hot and unstoppable.
Ryan froze when he saw me crying again. His calloused fingers brushed clumsily at my cheeks as he murmured, "I'm sorry. This is all my fault."
His gentleness only made the tears fall harder, as if I could cry out every hardship I'd ever endured.
"Come back," he said hesitantly. "Ethan needs you." Then, carefully adding, "I swear I won't touch you again."
My chest ached with bitter frustration. Finding another job here seemed impossible, and Ethan still needed care. Going back was my only choice.
Fine. But if Ryan stepped out of line even once, I'd be gone.
When I nodded, Ryan lit up like he'd won the championship. His usual stern expression melted into the most satisfied smile I'd ever seen.
Just like that, we were city-bound again.
Returning felt different this time. Ethan beamed when he heard I'd stay until Ryan's competition, his smile so bright it could melt glaciers. True to his word, Ryan moved out, giving me the guest room. Now I had nothing left to fear.
Except... this was his home. Why should he leave because of me?
"Stop overthinking," Ryan said, reading my hesitation. "I've got another place. I only stayed here to be close to you." Then—because he couldn't help himself—he ruffled my hair.
Before I could protest, Ethan's voice cut through: "Sophia! Ryan! What are you two lovebirds doing?"
I sprang back like I'd been shocked, face burning. "Ethan James Roscente! Bed. Now!"
He stuck out his tongue and bolted before I could grab him.
Even my little brother could see the truth Ryan refused to say—he was crazy about me.
