Blade was startled by his words, pressing her earphone. "Phoenix, wait for the right moment. It's more important to protect the child."
Phoenix had already changed into the lab assistant's clothes, whispering, "Got it."
She swiped her card into the lab and stood behind everyone, watching Laura in the mirrored glass.
Carol didn't notice her and commanded, "Wake her up."
Laura suddenly felt a tingling pain spread throughout her body, and she abruptly opened her eyes.
What greeted her was a strange world.
She didn't know what room this was, it was just cluttered with trophies and photos on the table.
Laura felt like there was something on her head, but she couldn't remove it no matter how hard she tried.
She had to give up.
Puzzled, she stood up and walked around the room. "Is anyone there?"
On the other side of the glass, there was a large screen on the console.
It was the VR world that Laura could see.
Phoenix manipulated the UAV to project this VR world for Blade and the others to see.
Laura seemed unaware that this was fake, picking up the photos placed on the table.
In the photo, Lilian wore a cheerleader uniform, standing together with Winnie.
Her mother had a radiant smile, while Winnie gently held her arm. The two sisters looked very close and even somewhat similar.
Laura was a little happy. "Mom?"
Carol took the microphone handed to her, cleared her throat, and spoke, "Lala."
Laura's heart trembled, and she turned to look behind her.
Lilian, who was dressed in a school uniform, stood at the door of the room with a smile. "I'm here."
Laura widened her eyes in surprise, looking at Lilian.
It was sunny, and Lilian's ponytail was tied high, her smile warmer than the sunlight coming in from outside.
This was the mother Laura had never seen before.
Very young, beautiful, and radiant, she seemed to be in her teens.
Laura couldn't help but stare in astonishment.
Carol walked into the lab, carrying equipment on her, and crouched down, arms wide open. "Won't you give me a hug?"
Laura's breath hitched, and she threw herself at her with open arms, hugging her tightly.
Before Laura could say anything, tears were already streaming down her face. "Mom, did the car crash hurt you? Are you still in pain?"
Carol, with a fake smile, hugged the unsuspecting Laura. "The pain has long gone."
Laura was very happy, touching her face. "You look so young, so beautiful. Are you feeling better now? Don't you want to cry? Aren't you sad anymore?"
Carol's smile stiffened slightly as she nodded. "Not sad anymore."
Laura became increasingly joyful. "You've gotten over it, right? You mean you won't care if Uncle, Dad, and Carol like you anymore, right?"
Carol was speechless. 'Why am I the one being addressed so impolitely?'
Carol shook her head. "I don't care anymore, I don't care about anyone, I only care about you."
Laura widened her eyes, tears streaming down her face without warning.
Her mother had never been this gentle to her before.
She was afraid this was a dream. "Really? Is this a dream?"
Carol nodded and said, "Yes, it's real, so to repay me, will you give me a little encouragement?"
Laura nodded without hesitation, joyfully saying, "Mom, I can earn money now. You don't have to ask that weird mister for money anymore. I can use my money to buy you a house, a big one. I'll protect you, Mom. Whatever you want, I can buy it for you. I've saved up a lot of money, I'll give it all to you, okay?"
Carol raised her eyebrows and asked, "Really?"
Laura nodded hurriedly. "Yes."
Carol smiled gently. "But I don't want anything from you. I just want you to do me a favor."
Laura said without hesitation, "Go ahead."
Carol stood up, looking down at her. "You know, I have always hoped that my mom could see me, but I'm not smart enough, I'm stupid. But you're different, you're smart. I would be very happy if you're willing to do an experiment with her."
Laura was taken aback. "Do an experiment with Grandma Carol?"
Carol nodded, but hesitated. "Don't you want to agree?"
Outside the glass window, the staff in the lab smirked slightly.
Tiara felt satisfied. "The thing children can't live without the most is their mother. She will definitely agree."
Phoenix found it difficult to breathe, unable to resist speaking, "But is it okay to use a child's love for her deceased mother like this?
Everyone was taken aback and turned to look at her.
Phoenix suddenly tensed up. 'Oh no! I forgot I sneaked in. How can I speak?'
But no one realized she wasn't one of them. Glancing at her work card, someone sneered, "There are always sacrifices for scientific progress. Besides, this child hasn't lost anything, at least she gets to see her mom, right?"
Phoenix was speechless.
Another man mocked, "I heard this child's mom was a kept woman before she died, chased by the first wife and hit by a car. The child is not an illegitimate one, so I made her mother appear at her purest moment. She should thank me for that."
Phoenix looked at the screen in astonishment.
Lilian was wearing the uniform of Laura's school.
She looked like a high school student.
Phoenix had heard rumors.
Lilian was not valued in the family and had a straightforward personality, but she was also an exceptional beauty.
Joshua had even said that Lilian should also become Tyler's disciple as she was very suitable for it.
But later, it seemed that Lilian had done a lot of things, and Joshua gradually stopped mentioning this youngest sister, even beginning to feel disgusted towards her.
Joshua behind the screen couldn't bear it any longer as well.
He looked at the high school-aged Lilian as if everything from the past came flooding back to his mind.
Even if Lilian died in disgrace, she couldn't be talked about as a kept woman.
He couldn't let her appear in front of Laura like this.
This was all fake!
Unable to bear it any longer, Joshua finally got up and rushed out, followed closely by Dexter.
Laura, still unaware that her mother was fake, furrowed her brow, feeling a bit troubled. "Mom, Grandma Carol isn't a good person. Please don't think about her anymore, okay? She's the one who harmed you."
She urgently grabbed Carol's hand. "You know, Uncle and the others, and even you, have been manipulated. Carol's like the villain in a TV drama, stirring up trouble between you two. In fact, Uncle and the others were sent to the lab. Grandma Carol lied to you."
Carol's expression darkened, pushing her away. "That's not true. My mom wouldn't lie to me."
Laura, caught off guard, sat on the ground, shocked.
Carol glared at her coldly. "Laura, don't forget your origin."
Laura's face turned pale.
Carol grabbed her hair and lifted her. "I made a mistake, and you have to bear the consequences with me because your blood is tainted."
Laura, caught off guard, struggled in pain. "Mom, I know, I haven't forgotten."
