Carol's expression shifted briefly before she regained her composure. "I know what you want to do."
Carol looked at Laura with a sly smile, "You're trying to get this kid out, right? I can agree with that. Can you hurry up and give my data back?"
Carol glanced nervously at the computer again, "The data you stole is here. Even if you have it, you won't know how to use it, and I can fully compensate you."
Carol turned back to Laura, "Just make a price, and I'll meet it."
Determination glinted in Carol's eyes.
No one could resist the prices she offered.
Especially not for just a child.
Carol attempted to coax her, "I realize my mistake now. It was wrong of me to treat you that way, so give me a chance. It's also a chance for you, okay?"
Laura found that the hacking progress was at 89% on the computer.
She shook her head resolutely, "I must avenge for my mother."
Carol was shocked.
Laura spoke with added firmness, "Do you remember you told me that my mother wasn't impressive? That all her life's efforts were just to make you remember her. Do you remember me now?"
Carol gasped sharply.
Suddenly, the alarms in the laboratory stopped, and the world seemed to return to silence.
This meant that Laura's hacking was successful.
A string in Carol's mind snapped with her sanity vanishing instantly, like a mad woman. She lunged at Laura, "You just have to anger me, don't you? Don't forget who you are. If Winnie wasn't brainless, how could she possibly take in a child like you as her daughter? Do you think these people around you can protect you?"
Carol was desperate.
Laura, calm and composed, suddenly found the situation amusing and chuckled.
Carol was confused by her laughter.
Laura explained, "I'm treating you this way because you were cruel to my mom and me. I'll do to you just as what you have done to me. Is that wrong?"
Her clear eyes fixed on Carol, "If it's wrong, then why do you hurt others?"
Carol felt as if struck by lightning.
Carol thought, 'I could act this way towards others, but no one was supposed to act that way towards me.'
Carol's eyes were wild with fury. Carol lunged at Laura, "You've destroyed the work of my life. I was only using you as a test subject because you're my family. I advise you to return all my data right now, or else I won't let you get away with this."
Helpers of Joshua held Carol back, not allowing her the slightest breath of freedom.
Struggling in vain, Carol spoke loudly with desperation, "Joshua, are you going to let Laura hurt me like this? She's taken what I worked years for. Do you know what that means to me? Stop her now."
Joshua stood before Laura just as a tall, impenetrable wall.
Seeing Carol so hysterical, a wave of sadness washed over Joshua, "Mom."
Carol ignored Joshua and she retrieved her stolen research.
Joshua had grown accustomed to her neglect, his tone even colder, "I'm no longer your son and I won't support you."
Carol stared at Joshua, broad-eyed as memories surged back. Joshua said calmly, "The identity as your son died when you sent me to a mental institution."
Carol stared at him, broad-eyed as memories surged back. Panic flashed across her face, but her voice remained steady, "My son was insane. What was wrong with sending him to a mental institution?" Joshua's brow creased slightly, but he quickly resumed his composed demeanor, "Then, what is wrong with me protecting my niece and nephew? If you weren't my mother, you would've been killed by me. But you are, so I'm giving you one chance to get out."
Carol's lower lip quivered violently, and unexpected tears started filling her beautifully fierce eyes.
Joshua was puzzled.
Even Laura was surprised.
Carol cried.
Lips trembling with a mix of defiance and bitterness, Carol couldn't help but let tears escape, silently staring at them.
After a long moment, Carol regained her composure, "It won't be so easy to get rid of me, Joshua. As long as I'm not dead, I am your nightmare, and you will never escape me. I gave you life and we are bound by blood which is forever."
Carol seemed insane, scoffing at Laura, "You too."
Laura looked back at her with her chin lifted confidently, "I don't think so."
Carol frowned.
Carol lifted her head with absolute resolve, "I believe that as long as I try hard, I'll be your nightmare, just like you've been to my mother. You're old, grandma, so you'll lose to me. Unlike Uncle and Mom, they have feelings for you, enabling your success because they love you. I feel nothing for you, so you can't win, not ever."
Carol suddenly found it hard to breathe.
Laura was becoming more and more like her mother, Lilian.
The stubbornness, resilience, and courage were like perfect replications.
Lilian's blood was in Laura.
It was the retribution of Lilian that had sent to her.
Carol laughed with tears unexpectedly streaming down her face, "I'll be waiting for you. But you'll have to wait for me too."
As Carol laughed heartily, her subordinates pulled her away, fleeing the scene like a rat making a hasty retreat.
Laura stood resolutely with her gaze unwavering on Carol, not once flinching or looking away. Only after Carol had vanished from her sight did she allow herself to relax.
At that very moment, Everett wrapped her in a bear hug, exclaiming, "You're really something, Laura."
Phoenix followed suit, lifting her high, "That was awesome."
Caught off guard and feeling the thrill of being hoisted up, a smile quickly spread across Laura's face, and her anger dissipated without a trace.
Laura thought, 'Yes. I'm the best.'
Joshua stood at the doorway, looking at her with profound eyes, "Laura when you grow up, come and work with us. You have the potential."
Phoenix held her tight immediately, "No way, Lala has got to follow me. We worked together so well today."
Joshua clicked his tongue in disapproval, "What a joke. Laura should be trained by my side. What could she possibly learn with you lot?"
Unable to tolerate it anymore, Zayn pulled Laura over to his side, "Laura will stay with me until she's grown, so give it up."
Laura simply nodded, "I agree with Zayn."
Joshua and Phoenix were speechless.
