                    Evan was confused, "Military training?"
With a flick of his wrist, Evan tossed the script back, his aversion clear, "I don't want this. That place is dirty and tiring, and there are bound to be a ton of annoying issues. I'm here to shoot a variety show. I want to do it joyfully. How can you just throw me into the army?"
His agent frowned, "Do you even understand the value of this segment? The kids are just there for show. This variety show has its point precisely because of this theme, and that's why I've gone."
Evan thrust the script back into his arms, "This time, you absolutely must leave a lasting impression of being gentle, competent, and decisively efficient. And you've got to take good care of Laura, got it?"
Evan was frustrated and wrinkled his brow. He wasn't keen on kids, and tolerating one for a bit was okay. But to participate in a military-themed variety show? It was just one episode, about three days, so he had no choice but to grin and bear it.
Six days later.
Laura, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, shouldered her little backpack and appeared at the airport.
Dora, taking care of her, gave worried instructions, "This trip might be a bit rough because you're going to join training at a military base, and you'll meet some soldiers. Remember to be polite, okay?"
Laura nodded vigorously, "Are the soldiers just like the ones on TV who protect the country and are super cool?"
Dora nodded and ruffled her hair, "Yes, exactly like that. You're so smart, Lala. I believe you'll do great."
She was confident in Laura.
Laura was an exceptional child and there was no need to worry about how she would fare.
Her concern was for the celebrity, Evan.
Dora leads Laura around, looking and then spotting Evan's agent on the phone. She waved her hand to catch attention, "Elsie."
Laura looked in that direction, spotting a power-dressed woman in a suit turning her head, her face lighting up with a smile as she quickly approached, "Dora."
Laura watched Elsie.
A young man in a baseball cap and a mask was looking at her with a cool detachment. Laura grew more curious.
Laura thought, 'Was this my surrogate father for what was to come?'
Elsie greeted her with a beaming smile. "Lala, I've heard so much about you, and you're so cute."
Laura, dressed in utility pants paired with yellow ankle boots and sporting twin ponytails, gave a shy smile, "Hello, Elsie."
Elsie was smitten, "Oh, how sweet you are."
Dora reluctantly handed her over to Elsie, "Ms. Sanders, I still have work to do. Please take her to the military base, and make sure you look after her, okay?"
Elsie's eyes were full of warmth, "Don't worry, Evan knows how to be gentle with kids."
She introduced Laura to Evan, "Evan, this is Laura. Get to know each other."
Laura looked up at Evan, "Hello."
Evan glanced at her with a half-smile, "Hello, sweetheart."
Evan was uncomfortable but took the initiative to hold Laura's hand.
Seeing his kindness, Dora felt reassured and happily said, "I'm glad you're okay with kids. Lala can be a handful, and she needs a partner who can handle her."
Evan gave a friendly smile, "I love kids. Don't worry, I'll take good care of Laura."
Dora, without thinking too much of it and pressed for time, glanced at her watch. She had to go.
Dora handed over Laura's belongings to Evan, "She's easy to care for and she's potty-trained. She can do things herself. I'm counting on you guys."
Evan nodded with a smile and led Laura away.
Laura looked up at Evan.
Evan kept himself well-covered with a hat and a mask, but once in the car, he removed his mask and held up his phone, "Let's take a selfie."
Laura smiled at the camera.
Evan also smiled gently, posting on Twitter, "First time being a dad and having a precious daughter. Welcome to my side, adorable Lala."
The post was accompanied by the selfie they just took.
Fans were eagerly waiting because this show had good anticipation.
Soon after the post went up, the comments soared past ten thousand.
[Trainee daddy and apprentice daughter are so sweet!]
[Trainee daddy is 22 years old.]
[They are cute babies of mine.]
Evan browsed through the comment section, noting that almost all of them were singing praises for him and Laura. There were even some new fans who had been swayed over. He cast a surprised glance at Laura, realizing why so many people were keen on riding her popularity. She did have something special about her.
Leaning back in his car seat, he said, "I haven't eaten yet. Let's find an Epean restaurant."
Laura paused, glancing at her phone watch, "But the variety show starts in forty minutes. We can't be late."
Evan shot her a sharp look that seemed to cut through her. Laura trembled slightly under his gaze.
Showing his impatience, Evan pulled his hat down low, "Just listen to me. We're going to eat."
Laura pouted, watching the clock with apprehension. She thought, 'Would it be okay to be this late?'
One and a half hours later
The impatient military officer, Bert, looked at his watch, "Have you called them? Why hasn't Evan's group arrived yet?"
The production team offered an apologetic explanation, "They said there's traffic on the road."
"Traffic?" Bert scowled, "It's a forty-minute drive from the airport. It's been an hour and a half. They should have crawled here by now."
Just then, someone outside announced, "Evan has arrived."
Bert walked outside and looked at the car.
When Laura saw Bert, she felt uneasy and asked Evan, "We are so late. Could there be trouble?"
Evan, unfazed, tugged his hat lower, "Don't worry. Trust me."
Evan got out of the car, followed by a nervous Laura.
Bert, with his tall stature, approached them, but before he could speak, Evan started, "Sorry, Mr. Yale. Laura was crying and begging for food. We're late and sincerely apologize."
Then he turned to Laura, "Apologize to Mr. Yale for your actions."
Laura was aggrieved and thought, 'It has nothing to do with me. I only drank water.'
Feeling wrongly accused, Laura opened her mouth to protest, but Evan stepped forward and squatted down in front of her, "Sweetie, you have to admit your mistakes, and Mr. Yale won't blame you."
Evan said to Laura with a gentle voice, "We're teammates, so you've got to back me up. If you don't, we'll both get talked about. You don't want to betray me, do you, sweetheart?"
Laura was speechless.
