Laura felt wronged and was just about to speak.
Evan, as if terrified she'd start talking, quickly interrupted, "Okay, okay, big brother knows it's not your fault you're hungry. It's my bad for forgetting to bring snacks, okay?"
He turned to Bert with an apologetic smile, "I'm sorry. You see, our little princess is quite young. She's only four years old. So I'm sure Mr. Yale won't mind, right?"
Bert was furious as she looked at Laura, "I can bear with you being late, but what you shouldn't have done was fail to give me a heads-up. I've been here waiting. I'll let it slide this time but don't let it happen again."
Evan nodded vigorously, "Yes, you can count on us. Next time we will never do that again!" He wrapped Laura in his arms, cooing gently, "Laura, you remember now, okay? Next time we can't tell fibs, alright?"
Laura furrowed her brows tightly and remained silent.
The live comments were all praising Evan. [After waiting for my Laura and my hubby for so long, they've finally arrived. I knew my man isn't the type to be late. It turned out to be Laura who made my hubby late. But no worries, little girls need looking after. It just shows how gentle my hubby is.]
[To Laura's fans, I want to say that our Laura doesn't usually run late, and she loves to follow the rules. Breaking the rules is just not something that happens to Laura. This time feels like an outlier.]
[Laura's fans are quite funny. Your baby's just a four-year-old girl. It's normal for little kids to get hungry sometimes, and we all get that. Plus, Evan is even calling your Laura baby. What's there to be unhappy about?]
[Who's unhappy now? We're just saying that Laura isn't that kind of child. When has she ever been late on a variety show? Claiming she suddenly got hungry, I'm having a hard time buying it. Also, I felt like Laura seemed to have some grievances, as though she had something to say but didn't speak up.]
[I also want to say that Laura's sulking face is she trying to throw shade at Evan? She's the one who was late and hungry, yet Evan even tried to smooth things over for her. And she's still all pouty. To whom is she showing that grumpy face? Seriously...]
[Hey, foul-mouthed fan, watch your language!]
[Guys, let's calm down. That fan is probably just one of Evan's haters. Please, everybody, don't get upset. We don't mind Laura's grumpy face. It's normal for a kid to be upset about being called out for being late. We understand, and Laura's fans should just admit the little hunger issue. It's not a big deal.]
[But I honestly feel like Laura isn't the type to run late...]
As live-streaming channel excitement showed no sign of cooling down, the cameraman zoomed in close, capturing every facet of Laura's troubled expression.
Laura looked conflicted as she glanced at Bert, and opened her mouth to speak. Then she turned to look at the bursting-with-energy Evan beside her. In the end, she bowed her head.
Bert noticed something off in Laura's eyes and narrowed her own sharply, her gaze then flicking towards Evan. Evan's eyes were gleaming as he looked at her, "Mr. Yale, what should we do now? Just tell us what to do."
Bert's voice was deep and firm. "Considering there's a valid reason for this mishap, I'll let the lateness slide. Evan, take your kid and go get changed. I'll give you ten minutes, and when you're done, come find me." Pointing towards a building on the other side, he had someone hand over a set of clothes to them.
Evan frowned holding the clothes, then turned to leave. Bert called out, "If you've got makeup on, make sure to take it off."
Evan was stunned, looking at Althea in disbelief.
Bert said, without a hint of emotion, "All that stuff on your face, looking like a freshly painted white wall, and those black lines around your eyes, wash it all off."
Upon hearing this, Laura glanced at Evan in astonishment, "Evan, you're wearing foundation and eyeliner? This is the first time I've ever seen a guy with eyeliner! I didn't even notice."
Evan was speechless. Well, he was indeed thankful that she hadn't noticed.
There were more live comments. [LMAO!]
[I Knew it! Evan can't live without his eyeliner! I thought his eyes looked extra deep, but I never guessed he wore eyeliner! Hahahaha, I can't stop laughing!]
[What's the big deal about eyeliner? Ever heard of aesthetic freedom? Evan likes to wear it, so what?]
[How? Do you understand where they are? They came here for military training, not to be a freaking decoration!]
[Poor Laura, getting matched with this type of person, wonders if ten minutes is even enough for him.]
[Some of Laura's fans need to get a grip. We've been putting up with you, okay? You keep trash-talking Evan. Wasn't your Laura late in the first place? She held back Evan, and now you say it's her bad luck? It's not clear yet who the drag here is. I bet Laura will be the one slowing things down!]
Evan's face was unusually pale as he clutched the clothes and headed into the changing room. Laura trailed closely behind, and the cameraman couldn't follow them in. He had to wait outside the door.
The moment the door closed, Laura reached out her hand, "Evan, give me my clothes, please."
Evan gave her a cold look and flung the clothes onto the floor, almost hitting her face!
Laura stepped back in shock and looked at him bewildered, "Are you mad at me, Evan?"
Evan ignored her.
Frowning, Laura felt that she might have assumed too much. She picked up the clothes and walked to the other side to get changed. The clothes were a kid-sized set of camouflaged summer wear.
She awkwardly got dressed and glanced over at Evan. He hadn't even started changing and was still in full makeup, pinching the garment with disgust, "These clothes seem used!"
Laura glanced at the time, feeling a bit embarrassed, "Evan, it's been five minutes. You better hurry up."
Evan was annoyed by her.
Laura turned around politely, "I'm not looking. Just let me know when you're done changing."
Evan's lips twitched in dissatisfaction, "Don't you know you're supposed to listen to your elders?"
Laura froze, then turned around in confusion, "But I am listening. The one who's not is you."
Evan was stunned.
Laura pointed to her watch, speaking methodically, "We're already an hour late. I've been doing everything right. You were the one eating, and now you need to take off your makeup and change. We might be late again because of you. You're the one dragging Laura down."
Evan stared for a moment, "I'm dragging you down? Didn't you eat?"
Laura, "I didn't."
Evan's lips twitched again, "Didn't you drink water?"
She tilted her head, "The water was free. The kind waitress offered it to me, which has nothing to do with you."
Evan's eyes bulged, furious as if flames were about to shoot out, "Do you also act like a law unto yourself at home!? Are you talking back to an adult?"
