Zayn's eyes sparkled with starlight as he watched Laura, unable to look away. Yet, his expression remained unchanged.
Beside him, Taron caught up in the excitement and let out an impressive whistle. "Wow, Lala!"
Zayn shot him a cold glance.
Taron quickly corrected his tone, "Laura, you're awesome!"
Satisfied, Zayn turned his attention back to the confrontation.
Clifford, unable to contain his irritation but mindful of the bodyguard behind Laura, scoffed, "You think you're so special with your bodyguard? My dad wanted to get me one, too, but I thought they were annoying, so I said no! What's there to brag about having a lousy bodyguard?"
Laura snorted proudly, "That's because the bodyguard your family wanted to hire isn't professional. My bodyguard here is top-notch, graduated with top honors, a perfect shot with any gun, extremely skilled! Does your family's bodyguard use real guns? Ms. Spider here used to carry guns wherever she went, and she's also a pro at high-speed car chases!"
Spider waved her hand modestly, "Oh, I'm not that impressive. You flatter me. I'm not that good."
Clifford sneered, "Yeah, right. It's just you and your bodyguard here blowing smoke. Do you think I'd believe that?"
Spider's expression darkened. She pulled an apple from her pocket, held it in her hand, and slowly crushed it.
Everyone inhaled sharply.
With a cold smirk, Spider chewed on the crushed apple, "Little boy, don't take my modesty seriously. I am indeed a very humble person. If you had any decency, you'd be more polite to Ms. Yale here. Oh, and by the way, I also dabble in Gatling guns and fighter jets in my spare time."
Clifford was lost for words.
Laura beamed proudly, "See? I bet your family's bodyguard can't juice fruit with one hand like ours can!"
Clifford was dumbfounded. He couldn't help but cry inwardly, 'Juicing fruit? Are you kidding me? It was more a show of her immense strength than a simple demonstration of juicing!'
Frustrated, he blurted out, "All you do is show off your bodyguard. Do you know who I am?"
Laura retorted, "Do you know who I am?"
Clifford huffed, "Someone from the Yale family, old friends of our Graham family. So what?"
Laura nodded, "Right, so we're basically the same. Why are you being so aggressive? Aren't we equals?"
Clifford was taken aback by her questions.
The others slowly caught on, murmuring, "She's right..."
Someone whispered, "Zayn and Clifford come from similar backgrounds. But it seems Zayn's family business is even better!"
Clifford's irritation grew. "Don't you guys have brains? Just looking at the business? You don't see the power behind it!"
A girl with glasses interjected, "If I'm not mistaken, Laura's family is involved in even more sectors. Her mom dominates real estate. Her dad runs a major investment firm. Her uncles each hold prominent positions: one is a movie star, another is the principal at Skyline Academy, one is involved in the mafia abroad, another owns entertainment companies, and yet another owns film companies. Laura's grandfather is into export trading. They're really wealthy."
Clifford's face darkened, "Thanks for the info, Miss. You've managed to dampen our spirits and boost Laura's prestige."
The girl replied cheerfully, "You're welcome! Just doing my duty!"
Clifford was exasperated. He couldn't relate to these people at all.
Angrily, he challenged Laura, "All you've got is your family's enterprise. Let's hear about your own achievements."
Laura frowned, momentarily stumped.
She hadn't debuted her film yet, and appearing on variety shows felt more like play than work.
Suddenly, Spider whispered in her ear, "I just had someone check, and this guy ranks last in his school!"
After she heard this, her eyes lit up.
Seeing her silence, Clifford gloated, "What? Got nothing to say?"
He looked around at the other students, spreading his hands. "See? I told you she's got no capabilities, just a waste."
But Laura's spirit was undiminished. "I've got it!"
Clifford looked at her. She stood, hands on hips, triumphant. "Zayn is number one in his year!"
Zayn, puzzled, wasn't sure why this was worth bragging about.
Clifford, momentarily embarrassed, scoffed, "What's there to show off about that?"
Laura countered, "But you're ranked last!"
Clifford was stunned. He asked himself, 'How did she know?'
The boys around them were shocked, their eyes wide. "Whoa, Clifford, you're last in the year?"
"Clifford, are you kidding me?"
"Man, we thought you were average, but last? That's difficult!"
Clifford's face reddened with embarrassment, "What's there to laugh about? I'm last, so what? My family has money!"
The boys' mouths twitched as they were trying to hold back their laughter.
However, the girls turned away, silent.
If Clifford wasn't embarrassed, then the embarrassment was on others. Why bothered feeling embarrassed for him?
Feeling his face burning, Clifford blurted, "Laura, grades don't define everything."
Laura persisted, "But you're last in the year."
Clifford was desperate. "The most important thing is character!"
Laura shot back, "But your character is the worst."
Clifford retorted, "Bad character doesn't prove anything. As long as we have money, I don't need to care about anything. I can just hire smart people to help me."
Laura confuted him, "But you can't handle them, because you're last in the year."
Clifford slammed the table, shouting, "Are you fixated on me being last? Is that all you can say?"
Laura shook her head. "Not really." And she sighed, saying, "But you really are last in your year."
Clifford was speechless.
The classmates were silent.
Zayn chuckled.
Clifford's face turned green out of anger while thinking, 'When will the class start? Has five minutes ever felt so long?'
Seeing Clifford at a loss for words, Laura knew she had won. She took Zayn's hand, "Clifford, I know you don't like Zayn, and we don't need you to. But if you speak ill of him again, I'll have my mom tell your mom. Do you dare?"
Clifford was silent. No, he did not dare.
