Sebastian stood off to the side, not even wanting to speak as Celia approached.
Tyler took on the role of referee, announcing, "All racers, take your positions!"
Laura, in her red race car, matched Celia's team color. She was paired with Celia, while Zayn teamed up with Everett, and Jasper formed a group with Xander. Clifford, as the odd one out and considering that the track belonged to him and he practiced often, competed alone.
"Competition begins!" Laura floored the gas pedal and shot off! But Celia just zipped right past her!
She was all in, laser-focused, but Celia threw a glance back and flicked her middle finger, "Trash!"
Stunned, Laura cried out, "Slow down!!"
Celia scoffed. Wait for her? Not happening. She pushed the pedal to the metal, but then her car violently crashed into the tires at the edge of the track, sending her flying from the seat because she hadn't buckled up!
Celia tumbled to the ground, pain wracking through her organs, her whole body spasming with agony!
Tyler's eyes lit up, "Our annoying racer has knocked herself out of the race by crashing into her teammate. What a gift to clear the field!"
Celia lay on the ground, looking every bit like a flattened toad, "What the...?!" She fumed internally. Polite much?!
She propped herself up to look at Laura. There Laura was, racing down the track with abandon, glancing back at her, "You see? I was right!"
Celia rolled her eyes. Thanks for the heads up! She had been right! But what of it?
Limping and clutching her injured shoulder, she made her way to Sebastian, eyes wide with a pitiful plea, "Mr. Sebastian Fuller—"
Sebastian replied, "If you're hurt, go find a doctor. I'm not a medic."
Celia rolled her eyes. She glanced at Laura, "She won't win first place anyway."
Sebastian said, "Someone who crashes into a wall at the start has no right to talk."
Celia fell silent...
Laura floored the accelerator. Jasper slowed down, intending to align his pace with hers, only to have Laura mercilessly zip right by him.
Jasper was left puzzled.
Everett, smirking mischievously, decelerated and teased Laura, "Hey Laura, how about this? Call me bro nicely, and I'll let you have the first place!"
Laura didn't acknowledge him at all. With a slick drift, she was out of there! Everett was left puzzled.
From the stands, Tyler was cheering ecstatically, "And there goes our youngest racer, speeding past number five who tried to chat her up, and number four who attempted to tease! She's hot on the heels of number one, two, and three!!!"
Laura, driving car number six, set her sights on Xander. Xander cast a glance back at her and suddenly gestured as if to shoo her away. Laura felt puzzled.
Xander effortlessly hit the gas and pulled off a slick drift that left Laura trailing behind in a haze of exhaust. She clenched her teeth and gave chase.
Tyler couldn't hide his amusement. "We've got ourselves a fiery showdown between the two cars! I hear from the grapevine that Zayn's new to go-karting. Mr. Sebastian Fuller, as our judge, what's your take on the rookie's chances for snagging first?"
Zayn caught on quickly, leaving Clifford about three paces behind. The distance between them might not have seemed significant, but it was clear that Clifford had hit his top speed, and now Xander, coming up from behind, was poised to overtake him.
Sebastian commented with confidence, "Although Zayn is a novice, his talent is quite exceptional. It's as if he's born lucky, with an exceptional feel for the car. On the other hand, despite Clifford being a veteran, his lack of any titles in all his years of go-karting competitions speaks volumes. He's just not up to scratch. Zayn overtaking him is hardly a surprise."
Clifford hit the brakes, "What?! That's a bit harsh, don't you think, Mr. Sebastian Fuller?" But in the very next moment, Xander passed him. Laura was hot on Xander's tail, and Everett wasn't far behind either. Clifford was suddenly in last place.
Tyler's gaze was locked onto Laura with keen interest. "So, Mr. Fuller, what's your take on why Laura, as a beginner, has picked things up so quickly? Clearly, with enough practice, she could be just as skilled as these guys, right?"
Sebastian nodded, his eyes sparkling with interest as he watched Laura. "This kid, much like Zayn, is naturally gifted and touched by fortune. She excels at whatever she tries her hand at. But I believe her early bloom into a formidable player is primarily due to her excellent genes."
Tyler said, "How so?"
Sebastian's eyes narrowed, "Laura has an athletically gifted mother, Lilian, who was a sports champion. Aerobics, marksmanship, horse racing, and F4 were among her favorite high-adrenaline pursuits, and she clinched titles in all of them. Laura is a pentathlete, but apparently, she's even stronger in sports, so she's going to do well."
Celia's expression turned incredulous. "No problems? How can this child be that excellent? Just because the mother is capable, should the child be too? Ridiculous. My mother was hardly extraordinary, yet haven't I also done well? Laura finishing last." This had nothing to do with talent.
She kept her eyes glued on Laura. As Laura deftly drifted through the S-curve, her expression became increasingly stern.
It was the final lap. Once she made it around the upcoming bend, the finish line would be straight ahead.
Zayn and Xander were side by side, both sparing glances behind them. Everett turned his attention to Clifford, who had risen in the ranks. Clifford, looking puzzled, asked, "What's up?"
Everett gave Laura a look, scrunching his nose and shaking his head.
Clifford was incredulous, "Block Laura?"
Everett rolled his eyes, tilting his chin toward the finish line, eyeing Laura once more, underscoring the point of his gaze.
Clifford's eyes lit up, "You want me to take first place?"
Everett sharply inhaled and, with a fierce twist of the steering wheel, veered towards Clifford! Clifford stomped on the brakes, exclaiming, "Holy crap!!!" Laura swept past the two, glancing back in astonishment, but continued to surge forward relentlessly.
Clifford exclaimed, "What the hell are you doing?!"
Everett snatched off his helmet, his hair exploding out like a lion's mane, and shouted, "I was telling you to let Laura take first place! Can't you understand a look?!"
Clifford, still shocked, replied, "Why didn't you just say that?! You could have wrecked my face!"
Jasper cruised by at a leisurely pace, "With that face of yours, crashing might count as plastic surgery."
Clifford retorted, bewildered, "You sister complex, it's ridiculous. Besides, even if we three backed off, do you think Zayn and Xander would do the same?"
No sooner had he spoken than Zayn and Xander suddenly swerved into the guardrails!
Laura rocketed past the finish line!
Tyler leaped up in excitement, "Laura has won this round! Let's give it up for Laura!!!"
Celia fumed with indignation, "Hold on, Laura cheated. All the racers let her win! This championship is fake!!"
Suddenly, several piercing glares fell upon her. She felt her heart skip a beat and looked to their source. One by one, the young drivers removed their helmets, giving her scornful looks from their seats.
Zayn's gaze was as sharp as icy daggers, "We crashed into the guardrails by accident. Laura won fair and square, got it?"
Celia fell silent...
