Celine's company was done for—completely destroyed.
In his twisted revenge, Jack had leaked her confidential files to a competitor, sealing her company's fate. Bankruptcy followed soon after.
When I saw her again, she looked like a ghost of herself. Streaks of gray ran through her tangled hair, her clothes wrinkled and stained, as if she hadn't changed them in days.
The moment our eyes met, tears spilled down her cheeks. Her shoulders slumped in defeat as she whispered, "Alex... did I really ruin everything?"
I didn't answer. Instead, I held up my hand, letting the glint of my engagement ring catch the light. "I'm getting married, Celine. Leave me alone."
Her breath hitched. When she saw the ring, her whole body shook like a leaf in the wind. Her voice cracked as she begged, "Alex, please—I know I messed up! It was Jack, he—he manipulated me! But I swear, I love you. Only you!"
Classic Celine. Always pointing fingers, never owning her mistakes.
Looking back, I must've been out of my damn mind to ever love someone like her.
When I stayed silent, she mistook it for hesitation. "Please," she rushed on, "just give me one more chance. I'll never hurt you again!"
I stared at her, my voice flat, detached—like I was talking to a stranger. "You disgust me."
"You say you love me? Where were you when I was in the hospital after the accident?"
"You were on the couch, laughing with Jack over some stupid game. You didn't even check on me. And the next day? You cooked his favorite seafood porridge—knowing damn well I'd break out in hives if I so much as smelled it."
"I know everything, Celine. When my mom died? You were with him. Our anniversary? With him. Our graduation trip? You bailed to be with him."
"You don't love me. You love the idea of me—when it's convenient for you. And honestly? It's pathetic."
The fight drained out of her. She swayed, like the weight of my words had knocked the air from her lungs.
I turned to leave, but her fingers latched onto my wrist. "So that's it?" she choked out. "There's... nothing left?"
I jerked my arm free. "Let go."
"Alex, please—" Her voice was raw, desperate. "I can change! Just tell me what to do!"
"It's over." My words were final, absolute. "I don't love you. I never will again."
This time, when I walked away, I didn't look back.
