Jack and I go way back—like, way back. We've been tight since we were little kids running around the neighborhood.
With his golden-boy charm and razor-sharp wit, Jack was always the center of attention. Girls flocked to him like moths to a flame.
And hey, I wasn't complaining. More than a few tried to cozy up to me first, hoping I'd put in a good word for them. Free snacks, meals, you name it—I reaped the benefits.
But Jack? He was picky. Like, impossibly picky. No one ever stood a chance.
Fast-forward to college, where we met Celine—the queen bee of campus. Rich, gorgeous, and actually nice? Yeah, she was that girl. Half the guys on campus had a crush on her, myself included.
But for me? She might as well have been on another planet.
Then came New Year's Eve. The male host bailed last minute, and somehow, Celine found out I had some hosting experience. Next thing I knew, I was up there with her, mic in hand.
After that, we clicked. We started hanging out, and before long, we were actual friends.
Jack? Not thrilled. He sulked about it more than once. Said Celine was "fake" or whatever, and suddenly, he was finding ways to mess with her.
Celine usually had the patience of a saint, but with Jack? All bets were off. They'd go at it right in front of me, trading barbs like some kind of verbal boxing match.
Time flew, and by junior year, I finally worked up the nerve to tell Celine how I felt.
I braced for rejection.
Instead? She said yes.
Just like that, we were together.
Jack? Yeah… not happy. Given how much he and Celine butted heads, he hated this. It took me forever to talk him down, and even then, he only grudgingly accepted it.
But nothing really changed between them. If anything, it got worse. Celine even started hinting—then outright telling me—that I should cut ties with Jack.
And that's how things stayed… until now.
Never in a million years did I think this would happen.
