So it had all been an act.
If the Oscars handed out awards for deception, they both would've taken home Best Actor.
My heart turned to ice.
In the end, I went home.
Celine never responded to my message.
Tears burned my eyes as I cried again, my nose stinging. I didn't stop until midnight, finally collapsing into a fitful sleep.
The faint jingle of keys in the door startled me awake.
Then—lights. Harsh, blinding.
Celine stood there, exhaustion written across her face.
She took one look at me sprawled on the couch, bleary-eyed, and frowned. "Why are you sleeping out here?"
Staring at her, I felt like I was seeing a stranger.
Because in our relationship, Celine had always been... distant.
She never reached for me first. Never kissed me unless I initiated.
I'd told myself it was just her personality. But now I knew the truth—she didn't love me.
Under my unflinching gaze, she shifted uncomfortably. "I saw your text. What's the drama now? I told you, I've been swamped with work. Can't you be more understanding?"
Watching her performance, I almost laughed.
She'd always been acting. I was the fool who'd played along, convincing myself she cared.
I sat up slowly, locking eyes with her. "Fine. Then let's get married."
Celine froze. Then, too quickly: "We agreed to focus on our careers first. Can't we talk about this later?"
The truth was simple—her family's business had been drowning, and mine had the money to save it. Even her startup? Built on my family's connections.
That's why she'd never leave me.
But I wasn't giving her the chance. "Then we're done."
She didn't react at first, thinking I was joking. "Alex, come on. We're adults. Let's talk this through—"
Her hand closed around my arm. The memory of her pressed against Jack flashed in my mind. Revulsion twisted my stomach.
I didn't hesitate. I shook her off and walked away.
