Celine walked away with her shoulders slumped, the picture of defeat.
Emma flashed me a triumphant thumbs-up. "Now that's how you handle a cheater," she declared with satisfaction.
I offered a polite smile. "Ms. Xiao, the food was amazing. Thanks for everything these past few days. I owe you dinner once I'm out of here."
It was a clear brush-off, but Emma either didn't notice or chose to ignore it. "Don't even mention it," she waved me off cheerfully.
Turns out, Emma was surprisingly easy to talk to. We clicked instantly, and before I knew it, we'd been chatting for hours. She only left when her hospital duties called.
My injuries healed quickly, and within a week, I was discharged. First order of business? Hiring movers to clear out my stuff from the apartment I'd shared with Celine. I sent all her belongings to her office - no note, no explanation.
Second move: calling my father to pull our family's investment from Celine's company. The fallout was immediate, and from what I heard, she'd been scrambling ever since.
About two weeks later, Emma and I were returning from dinner when we spotted Celine waiting at my doorstep. She looked like she'd been through hell - a far cry from the polished executive I'd known.
But betrayal has consequences, and she was learning that the hard way.
The moment she saw me, her eyes welled up. "Alex," her voice trembled, "I made a mistake. I ended things with Jack. Please... can we try again?"
I almost laughed. "Bit late for that now that your company's circling the drain, don't you think?"
Without my family's connections and resources, Celine's mediocre business skills couldn't keep her startup afloat. This sudden remorse? Pure desperation.
Emma stepped between us, her usual sunny demeanor gone. "Save the act, Celine," she spat. "You made your bed. Don't pretend this is about love."
I'd never heard Emma speak like that before.
Celine's face flushed crimson. "Who are you to interfere?" she shot back. "What's your relationship with Alex?"
Watching her, I realized the woman I'd loved for years wasn't worth another second of my time.
I gently moved Emma aside. "We're done, Celine. Final answer. The money's not coming back."
For once, she seemed to understand I meant it. She just stood there, speechless.
As I took Emma's hand to leave, Celine suddenly sprang to life, blocking our path. She grabbed my arm, pleading, "Alex, please! Just one more chance! Help me save the company!"
I jerked my arm free and wiped my hand with a tissue - couldn't have been clearer if I'd used disinfectant. "No."
A quick call brought security to escort her out. This was a private community; they'd only let her in because she'd been my girlfriend.
Watching them lead her away, Emma suddenly said, "You can use me if you need to."
I blinked. "What?"
She met my eyes seriously. "If she comes back, tell her you're seeing me. Or that I'm pursuing you. Whatever works."
There was something unexpectedly endearing about her earnest expression.
Emma fidgeted under my gaze, looking away with a cough before adding, "Just... promise you won't take her back."
"I won't," I assured her.
The way she exhaled - you'd think she'd been holding her breath the whole time.
