Before I knew it, Christmas was here. Emma insisted on joining my family's holiday gathering.
At first, my dad thought we hadn't been dating long enough for meet-the-parents, but the moment he saw Emma's picture, he did a complete 180.
I assumed it was because he found her attractive.
But nothing could've prepared me for what happened when Emma walked through the door. Dad practically shoved me aside to grab her hands, beaming like a kid on Christmas morning. "I can't be wrong - you're little Emma, aren't you? When did you come back? Why didn't you tell your Uncle?"
My brain short-circuited. "Dad... what are you talking about?"
He clapped me on the back hard enough to make me cough. "Don't tell me you forgot? You used to follow her around begging her to marry you when you were knee-high."
Rubbing my sore shoulder, memories suddenly came flooding back. My jaw dropped as I stared at Emma. "You're that girl from next door? The one who moved away?"
Emma crossed her arms with a playful pout. "Took you long enough. I'm wounded it didn't click sooner."
When I was five, there was this girl I played with every single day. Then right before first grade, her family moved overseas and never came back.
Honestly? I'd mostly forgotten about her - just vague memories of pigtails and scraped knees.
Faking outrage, I huffed, "Wait - you knew this whole time? Were you messing with me?"
She immediately softened, closing the distance between us. "I only realized after learning your full name. Don't be mad - I should've told you."
Dad couldn't care less about my dramatic moment. He'd already dragged Emma away to bombard her with twenty years' worth of questions.
After Christmas dinner, Dad "subtly" suggested I walk Emma home.
Outside, the neighborhood was alive with laughter and fireworks. We walked hand-in-hand through the crisp winter air, our breath making little clouds as we talked.
When we reached the park, Emma suddenly stopped walking.
As if on cue, every streetlight around us flickered out.
Then she pointed skyward just as fireworks erupted in a dazzling display overhead, painting her face in bursts of gold and crimson.
"Alex," she said, her voice barely audible over the explosions, "I'm so glad life brought us back together. Will you marry me?"
Being with Emma taught me there's love... and then there's being loved.
Emma didn't just tolerate my quirks - she embraced them. Midnight snack runs? Adventure. My occasional temper? Passion. And betrayal? Unthinkable.
So I reached for her hand, the fireworks reflecting in my eyes as I gave the easiest answer of my life.
"Absolutely I will."
