On Valentine's Day, my phone buzzed with a photo that shattered my heart—my boyfriend, Bob Wright, cozying up to his childhood sweetheart, Lucy Nash.
The picture showed him setting up a romantic candlelit dinner, complete with a diamond ring he'd apparently splurged $52,000 on.
Then came Lucy's smug follow-up text:
"Scarlet, your boyfriend's so thoughtful. He even brushed his teeth before kissing me."
Instead of losing it, I took a deep breath and posted the photo on Instagram with a simple caption:
"Let's all wish this lovely couple the best!"
After hitting post, I dumped the fancy dinner I'd spent hours preparing straight into the trash and booked myself a hotel room for the night.
The next morning, my phone exploded—hundreds of missed calls and messages. Bob had blown it up the most, followed by my dad and best friend.
His texts were a masterpiece of audacity:
"Scarlet Harper, have you lost your mind?! How dare you drag me and Lucy's reputation through the mud like this!"
"I already told you—Lucy's just a friend! Her coworkers upset her, so I was comforting her. Why do you always twist things? Get a grip!"
I stared at my screen, stunned for a second, then blocked him, deleted his nonsense, and called my dad back.
He hadn't slept all night. His first question? "Was that photo real?"
I told him everything—Bob, Lucy, the years of gaslighting.
After a heavy pause, his voice cracked with emotion. "Sweetheart… you did the right thing. You've put up with this for five years too long."
My throat tightened.
Five years.
Bob and I had been together since sophomore year, with plans to marry this year. But before me, there was Lucy—his eight-year "soulmate" who dumped him freshman year for some rich guy… until she got tossed aside for being infertile.
Then she slithered back into his life, playing the "just a friend" card while constantly needling me:
"Scarlet, if I really wanted Bob, do you think you'd still be his girlfriend?"
Bob gave her the power to act like this. But last night? That was the final straw.
I let them have each other.
For days, Bob vanished, and the silence was bliss. Then, right after my birthday, an unknown number called:
"Scarlet, wait for me after work. I'm taking you to dinner."
