"She had no right to make decisions for me. Besides, I haven't even given birth yet."
The audacity of her planning who my children would belong to—it made my blood boil.
Now I understood why Lucy had strutted in earlier with that smug little smirk. She'd already orchestrated this whole twisted scheme.
"Bob, you actually want our first child to call Lucy 'Mom'?"
He flinched, his gaze darting away like a guilty child.
"No, Scarlet! That was just something I said to calm her down last time—she was crying about never having kids of her own."
Lucy pouted, batting her lashes. "Liar! Bob meant it. He always keeps his promises to me."
Her words hit me like a slap.
Because she was right.
Bob did keep his promises to Lucy—every single one.
When he swore to quit smoking for her, he actually did it—after I'd spent months begging him to no avail.
When he promised her concert tickets, he'd fork over insane scalper prices if he had to.
Meanwhile, he forgot to book my HPV vaccine appointment three times in a row.
No wonder Lucy had the nerve to demand my firstborn be a boy while Bob was proposing to me.
The room spun. I grabbed my bag and stood, my vision swimming with rage.
Bob panicked. He shoved Lucy aside, his voice turning sharp. "Get out. We need to talk alone."
Lucy's eyes welled up. "Wow, Bob. Real classy." Her lips trembled. "Men always change, don't they?"
With a dramatic sob, she fled.
Bob turned back to me, his voice softening. "Scarlet, that was a year ago. I'd never let our child call her Mom. You know that."
I didn't answer. I just slapped him—hard.
"Bob, I'm not some consolation prize for Lucy."
His cheek bloomed red, but he didn't get mad. Instead, he knelt, rubbing my stinging hand. "Don't be angry. There's so much more I need to say."
The tenderness in his voice almost disarmed me.
Seizing my hesitation, he picked up the ring. "Scarlet, will you ma—"
The waiter burst in, breathless. "Sir! That woman—she just swallowed a whole bottle of pills!"
Bob went ghost-white.
A beat later, he was sprinting out the door.
The ambulance arrived quickly. I watched, numb, as Bob carried Lucy inside. Then I looked down at the ring in my palm.
I slid it onto my finger.
Too tight. Obviously not my size.
With a bitter laugh, I yanked it off.
For a second there, I'd almost let myself believe him.
But now?
I texted Anna: "Set up a cot in the office. I'm staying there indefinitely."
Then I changed my number.
Told my parents I'd be off-grid for three months for "work."
That night, Lucy's messages popped up:
[11:35 AM] Not that dumb—just vitamins. ;)
[11:36 AM] Face it. I'll always matter more to him than you.
For the first time, I replied.
Congrats. You're perfect for each other—a bastard and a bitch.
Keep him. He's yours.
