Hearing that familiar gentle voice, I froze for a moment before smiling bitterly. "Mr. Wright, we broke up. Remember?"
"Stop being dramatic! I'm already apologizing - what more do you want?" Bob's voice crackled through the phone, thick with irritation.
This was his pattern - flirt with Lucy, vanish when I got upset, then reappear days later pretending nothing happened. And like a fool, I'd always forgiven him. Looking back now, I cringed at my own naivety.
"The lease ends next week. I'm moving out. Come get your things."
"Are you insane? Where am I supposed to live?"
"Not my problem anymore." I hung up and blocked his new number immediately.
His text came through seconds later: [I'll meet you at your office at 6. Stop overreacting - Lucy's just a friend.]
Though my shift ended at six, I lingered until ten. Not for reconciliation, but closure. I'd wasted enough years on Bob - I wasn't about to lose money too. When he never showed, I cabbed home.
My best friend Lisa's message pinged: [Scarlet check this out! That homewrecker's at it again! So trashy!]
The screenshot showed Lucy's latest post - Bob cooking with the caption: [A man who cooks is SO attractive. Real husband material.]
I typed slowly: [Perfect. May they rot together happily.]
Lisa suddenly changed gears: [OMG you won't believe what I just learned from Lucy's old roommate! Her "infertility"? Actually from multiple abortions! That rich ex dumped her because she kept cheating. Guess how many times she betrayed Bob?]
I smirked. [Serves him right for keeping his ex around while dating me.]
[Exactly! They deserve each other. Dodged a bullet there, girl!]
My takeout arrived just as the doorbell rang. Of course - Bob bringing Lucy home again. How many times had I lost my temper over this scene? Now I just pitied them.
Bob watched me unpack dinner, guilt flashing across his face. "Lucy had stomach pains. You know she's not as tough as you..."
"Mm-hmm."
"It's not what you think—"
Lucy cut in with her signature fake innocence: "Scarlet's so lucky! Five years of Bob cooking for her, and she still complains?" Her doe eyes brimmed with fake admiration while radiating smugness.
Predictably, Bob snapped: "Enough! Stop causing trouble!"
I gave a cold laugh. "Funny - he cooked maybe once a month for me." Today's meal? Pure guilt over getting caught with Lucy.
Pulling out an itemized bill, I shoved it at Bob. "Wire this by week's end."
His pupils dilated in panic. "You're misunderstanding everything!"
"Oh I understand perfectly. Everyone does."
"Why are you being like this?"
Silently, I grabbed my food, retreated to my room, and locked the door. Bob's muffled cursing blended with Lucy's poisoned honey voice: "Her temper's unbearable. Poor Bob..."
"Whatever. She'll never leave me." Lucy's triumph was palpable. "Take me to karaoke? Sing for me?"
The slam of the front door finally brought peace.
