The next day was my day off—and Bob still hadn't come home all night.
Then, I got a call from my former boss, Anna.
"Scarlet, I've opened a new branch office right near your parents' place. I want you to come work for me. If you say yes, I'll give you an annual salary of $600K—double what you're making now."
After a pause, she couldn't resist adding, "And let's be real, your boyfriend's a total deadbeat. Don't let him drag you down."
"Anna… okay," I said.
"Perfect!" she cheered.
"You're young, but you've got talent and a level head. Work hard for me, and I'll make sure you're rewarded."
"Thank you, Anna."
She was the mentor who'd always believed in me. Now that I saw Bob for who he really was, I wasn't about to let this opportunity slip away.
As soon as I hung up, I called my parents.
"Sweetheart, that's incredible! Come home right away—we're celebrating!"
A pang of guilt hit me. I'd barely paid attention to my family these past few years. After graduation, I'd followed Bob to the city against their wishes.
For five years, he'd been the center of my world.
His stomach was sensitive, so I cooked meals to keep him healthy.
His salary was lower than mine, so I slipped him money whenever he needed it.
When he struggled at work, I stepped in to fix things for him.
And how did he repay me? By taking advantage of me, over and over, until he got bolder and bolder.
Well, no more. It was time to focus on my career—and myself.
The next day, I handed in my resignation.
My boss tried to talk me out of it, but my mind was made up. Reluctantly, he organized a farewell dinner for the team that evening.
By the time I got home at 11 p.m., the apartment was anything but quiet. Deafening music and laughter blasted from the living room.
Frowning, I unlocked the door—and froze.
My carefully decorated living room was trashed. Ribbons littered the floor, and more than a dozen people crowded the couches. Some were Bob's friends; others were strangers—probably Lucy's pals.
And on the wall, a giant banner screamed: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PRINCESS LUCY!
So. They'd thrown her a birthday party—in my apartment.
The second I walked in, Lucy clutched Bob's arm, putting on her best innocent act.
"Bob, is Scarlet mad? I thought she was always so understanding with you. Why's she being so selfish now?"
Bob shot me a dark look. "It's Lucy's birthday. She just wanted to save me some money by hosting it here. Everyone's having fun—don't ruin it. Just go to your room."
I strode forward until I was right in front of them. The crowd instinctively backed away, leaving just the three of us in the center of the room.
With a cold smile, I pulled out the bill again and slapped it against Bob's chest.
"Mr. Wright, you've got two options."
"One: Pay me back every dime I've spent on you over the last five years—rent included. That's $150K. Then take your new girlfriend and get out."
"Two: I lock this door, call the cops, and have you arrested for trespassing."
The second the words left my mouth, Bob's friends gaped at him.
"Wait—Bob makes over $20K a month, right? Scarlet's the one paying rent?"
