I knew something was off the second I reached the door. My gut told me these people might try to mess with me, so I called the cops.
When the police asked if I wanted to mediate, I immediately refused. Instead, I spent the whole night at the station.
The next morning, I left first thing, packed my bags, and headed straight to the airport.
My parents were waiting for me when I landed.
I didn't waste any time—I went directly to my new job.
Anna, my boss, was great. She handed me a project with serious potential.
I threw myself into work, pulling overtime every day, but I didn't mind. It felt good to focus on myself instead of chasing after some guy.
A few days later, 150K hit my bank account, followed by a text from an unknown number:
[Scarlet, did you quit? Why didn't you tell me?]
[We're done. Why would I?]
[Scarlet, where are you? Let me take you to dinner tonight.]
I scowled and fired back: [Got the money. Stop harassing me.]
[Scarlet, you're still so combative after all this time?]
His words sent me spiraling into the past.
Back in sophomore year, I'd chased Bob right after his breakup. With his looks, he was exactly the kind of guy girls flocked to.
Then Lucy showed up. After dumping her rich boyfriend, she latched onto Bob.
Every time we hung out, he'd drag her along, always making excuses. "Lucy's my friend. She got played by some jerk. Be nice to her, Scarlet."
But the second he left for the bathroom, Lucy's smirk would drop. "You actually want the guy I threw away?"
Turns out, she didn't even like him—she just loved the attention.
I snapped and dumped my coffee on her.
Of course, Bob walked back in right then. He rushed to her side, wiping the coffee off like she was made of glass.
"Bob, while you were gone, Scarlet kept telling me to stay away from you..."
Without hesitation, he threw his coffee at me. "Lucy's hurting, and you're still being cruel?"
The whole thing "ended" with him buying me some cheap stuffed animal.
After that, I refused to speak to Lucy unless Bob was around.
Sure, he claimed they were just friends, but he treated her way better than he ever treated me.
Back in the present, I typed fast.
[So in your mind, I'm always the one starting drama?]
Radio silence after that.
Until three days later:
[I know you're at your parents' place. Come downstairs. We need to talk.]
