I stole a glance at my parents on the sofa before hurrying downstairs.
There stood Bob, dressed to impress in a sharp casual suit - looking every bit as handsome as he had back in college. My breath caught for a moment.
"Scarlet," he said, thrusting an enormous bouquet of roses toward me, "I know I was wrong. Please forgive me."
I recoiled instantly, wrinkling my nose and backing away. "Get those away from me! I'm allergic, for God's sake!"
Bob's face fell. "I...I didn't know that," he stammered, cheeks flushing.
A bitter laugh escaped me. Of course he didn't know.
But he could recite Lucy's allergies like scripture - no strawberries, extra spicy everything. Every restaurant choice had been dictated by her preferences, while I pushed food around my plate.
Setting the flowers aside, he took a tentative step forward. "If you're unhappy with me, just say so. I'll change."
The words hit me like a slap. Those were my exact words from two years ago, when he'd sided with Lucy during one of our fights. I'd pleaded with him then: "Just tell me what's wrong! I'll change!"
His response still echoed in my ears: "Lucy wouldn't pick fights without reason."
Now watching him squirm, I couldn't help but laugh coldly. "You always choose Lucy. Why would I ever be satisfied with you?"
Bob's brow furrowed. "Scarlet, I know I've failed you these past five years, but let me explain. There's nothing between Lucy and me-"
His phone interrupted with the saccharine tones of "I Love You" - Lucy's doing, of course. I remembered how she'd changed his ringtone right in front of me. When I'd tried to do the same, he'd snatched his phone back: "You're older - act like it."
Now he stood frozen, torn between answering and continuing his pathetic apology.
I crossed my arms. "Well? Aren't you going to get that?"
