                    I shook my head. "Sorry, I can't."
Bob hesitated, then spoke carefully, "I promise, this'll be the last time. After this, I won't bother you again."
I sighed and finally gave in. "Fine."
His face lit up, and he eagerly took the bag from me.
"Let me walk you home."
I sidestepped him, and his smile faltered.
Out of nowhere, someone rushed between us.
Lucy grabbed Bob's hand, her voice dripping with sweetness. "Bob, there you are! Why have you been ignoring my calls? My texts?"
He stiffened and pulled back. "I told you—we need to keep our distance."
"But we're friends!" She tilted her head, feigning innocence. "Why would we need that?"
If I hadn't known the truth—that she couldn't get pregnant—I might've bought her act.
"Even friends need boundaries." Bob avoided her gaze, his voice tight.
Lucy's eyes welled up, and she suddenly jabbed a finger at me. "Did Scarlet make you say that? Did she finally manipulate you into taking her side?"
Bob couldn't even look at her.
I let out a bitter laugh.
This whole time, Lucy's acted more like his girlfriend than I ever did. No wonder she's so bold—he's the one who gave her the right to be.
I turned to leave.
Bob moved to follow, but Lucy blocked him, pouting. "I'm starving. Take me out for supper?"
"Enough, Lucy!" His voice cracked like a whip. "Scarlet doesn't like us being close. Stop provoking her!"
"You're being cruel!" Her voice trembled. "You've never talked to me like this. She's poisoned you against me, hasn't she? I knew she hated me!"
I froze. Again? Really?
Before I could react, Bob shoved Lucy away—not hard enough to hurt, but enough to send her stumbling into the dirt. Her white dress smeared with mud, she burst into tears.
"Scarlet never badmouthed you," he snapped. "Stop twisting things!"
Lucy looked up, tears streaming. "But you told me two weeks ago she's always had it out for me! You've changed, Bob!" She wiped her face dramatically. "Fine. I'm leaving. If something happens to me tonight, it's on you!"
She flagged down a cab and slammed the door behind her.
I stared at Bob. "She's pissed. Aren't you going after her?"
He rubbed his temples. "I've spoiled her too long. It's time she learned."
A hollow laugh escaped me. So he knew he was enabling her.
"Honestly? You two deserve each other."
Trash belongs with trash.
Bob's frown deepened. "You and I are the perfect match," he murmured, reaching for my hand.
For once, he'd chosen me over Lucy.
But it didn't feel like a victory.
At my doorstep, Bob gazed at me like I was the only thing that mattered. "Scarlet, I'll pick you up tomorrow at three."
