At three in the afternoon, I slid into Bob's car.
His eyes raked over me, lingering just a second too long.
"Why aren't you wearing a skirt? You look good in skirts."
My fingers froze on the seatbelt.
Two years ago, over dinner with Bob and Lucy, we'd both shown up in the same style of skirt.
Lucy had been distant the whole meal.
The second she left for the bathroom, Bob shot me a disapproving glare.
"Don't wear skirts next time. Lucy can't stand when people copy her style. And let's be honest—without her figure, you just don't pull it off."
I clicked the seatbelt into place.
"Funny. You once said my figure wasn't good enough for skirts."
Bob's gaze darted away, guilt flashing across his face.
"I… I'm sorry."
Too little, too late.
Half an hour later, he pulled up to a high-end restaurant.
Inside the private room, candlelight flickered over an elaborate setup—rose petals, champagne, the whole cliché.
It reminded me of the photo Lucy had sent me last time.
Bob had clearly outdone himself this round.
What a shame.
I couldn't care less.
Five years, and he still hadn't figured out I preferred seafood over stuffy, overpriced theatrics.
"Scarlet, there's something I need to tell you…"
Bob leaned in, eyes burning with rehearsed intensity.
Only then did I notice—his hair was slicked back, his gray suit perfectly pressed.
"Spit it out."
He reached for the red velvet box on the table.
"Scarlet, would you ma—"
A sharp knock cut him off.
Bob scowled as a flustered waiter bowed apologetically.
"Mr. Wright, a woman claims to be your friend. She insists it's urgent."
"Tell her to leave," Bob snapped.
The door swung open before he finished.
Lucy sauntered in like she owned the place, draping herself over Bob before he could react.
"Bob, how could you shut me out? I'm your best friend! You're proposing—I have to be here!"
She nuzzled his cheek, pouting.
"Still mad about yesterday? Fine, I'll apologize…"
She planted a loud, smacking kiss on his face, leaving a crimson lipstick stain.
Bob shoved her away, panic flashing in his eyes.
"Lucy, stop—Scarlet will get the wrong idea!"
Lucy smirked, deliberately wiping her lips.
"Oh, relax. She won't mind. You told me she's super tolerant."
Her gaze flicked to me, dripping with condescension.
"Oh, and Scarlet? I'll allow you to marry him. But heads up—your first kid better be a boy. Bob promised the first one's mine. The second one? That's yours to keep."
She tilted her head, all faux sweetness.
"I really like boys. So… make sure mine's perfect."
My hands clenched under the table.
Unbelievable.
