Julian never visited me during my week in the hospital.
Maybe he didn't even realize I was still pregnant. Not that it surprised me—that was just Julian. I used to make excuses for him, but not anymore.
After a week of rest, my body had recovered enough to be discharged. The whole time, I scrolled through Anne's social media. Every post was about Julian.
In the photos, Anne looked like a spoiled princess, surrounded by admirers, always at the center of attention with lavish meals and piles of gifts. Meanwhile, I was alone in a hospital room with nothing.
Even the pearl necklace Julian had promised me now hung around Anne's neck.
The strangest part? Seeing it all again and feeling… nothing.
When I got home, the place was exactly as I'd left it. Julian had been at the hospital with Anne the whole time. He hadn't come back, probably didn't even know I'd been hospitalized.
I packed my things quickly—tossed the photo from my nightstand, burned his love letters, slipped off my wedding ring, and left it on the coffee table.
When I was done, I looked around the empty house. It felt just like when we first moved in—cold, lifeless.
I picked up the divorce papers, flipped to the back, and signed my name.
He showed up before I could even call him.
I was on the phone with a coworker when he walked in.
"Flight's tomorrow afternoon," I said, then hung up the second I saw him.
He frowned. "What's tomorrow? A checkup?"
I pocketed my phone. "Work. Not a checkup."
Only then did I notice the takeout container in his hand. He met my eyes and held it out.
"Sorry, Scarlett. Anne's been in the hospital, and I couldn't leave her. Got you fish soup—helps with recovery."
I didn't take it. The smell alone turned my stomach. Years of marriage, and he still didn't know I couldn't stand fish. Pathetic. But I didn't even have the energy to argue.
"Oh, and this is Anne's silk dress. It's hand-wash only—can you take care of it tonight?"
I stared at him, suddenly unsure—had he always been like this, or had I just refused to see it?
Through clenched teeth, I said, "Leave it."
"Just grabbing some clothes, then I'm heading back," he said, already moving toward the bedroom.
I seized the moment, walking over with the divorce papers. "Julian, the mortgage is paid. Just need your signature here."
No hesitation. He signed without a second glance.
I watched him leave with his bag, then booked a flight for two hours later.
I left my wedding ring, the divorce papers, and the abortion slip on the coffee table—the last things I wanted him to see.
It was over.
