No one knew exactly how long Anne had been confined to her hospital bed, but Julian's bloodshot eyes told the story of sleepless nights. Anne took one look at his disheveled appearance and feigned concern. "Julian, go home and get some rest. Let Sam handle things for a while."
Julian's gaze flickered to his phone—Scarlett's chat window was empty. He swallowed the words on the tip of his tongue and said nothing.
Normally, Scarlett would've blown up his phone by now—angry texts, frantic calls, something. Why the silence this time?
A gnawing unease settled in his gut. He needed to check on her. But just as he turned to leave, Anne grabbed his arm.
"Julian, about the hospital bills for the next few days..." She trailed off, but the implication was clear.
With a frustrated sigh, he pulled out his card—only for the payment to be declined. "What the hell?"
He swiped again. And again. Same result. A quick call to the bank confirmed it—$14,000 had vanished from his account.
His pulse spiked. Something was wrong.
Speeding home, he tried to convince himself Scarlett was just giving him the silent treatment. But when he threw open the door, there was no angry outburst, no icy glare—just hollow silence.
The living room felt unnaturally bare. He bolted to the bedroom. Her clothes were gone. The only thing left in the closet was a bag of Anne's laundry he'd forgotten to wash.
Hands shaking, he dialed Scarlett's number. A robotic voice answered: "The number you have reached is no longer in service—"
His heart lurched violently, as if someone had plunged a knife into his chest.
Dazed, he wandered through the empty house until his eyes landed on a stack of papers on the coffee table. The bold print at the top made his blood run cold: DIVORCE AGREEMENT—with both their signatures at the bottom.
His stomach twisted. He'd signed it in a hurry that day, too distracted by Anne to read the details.
Beneath it lay a medical record—a termination of pregnancy. When had she—?
A searing pain tore through him, sharp enough to steal his breath.
Next to the papers sat a simple, unadorned ring. His throat tightened as he picked it up. He'd bought it for her after working himself to exhaustion in the freezing cold. Despite all their fights, she'd never taken it off.
But now, by draining their account and leaving only this behind, she'd made her message painfully clear: It's over.
Scarlett—who had married him without a wedding, who had loved him so fiercely—what had he given her in return?
Memories of his neglect crashed over him. His vision blurred as tears spilled down his face, his chest heaving with ragged breaths.
Then—his phone rang. He snatched it up, desperate for her voice.
But it was Sam and Anne.
"Julian, the hospital says the payment only covers tonight. Did you take care of it?"
"You should rest. Sam can stay with me—I'll be fine."
"Oh, and can you order us some food? We're starving."
White-hot rage erupted inside him. His grip on the phone turned deadly.
"GET OUT!" he roared, hurling the phone against the wall. It shattered into pieces—just like his life.
