They were all a toxic bunch—playing at friendship while scheming behind each other's backs.
The moment that blog post hit the internet, it exploded. Overnight, Anne became public enemy number one. Even in the hospital, people whispered as she passed. The nurses who tended to her couldn't resist snide remarks under their breath.
The pressure took its toll. Anne started acting erratic, her grip on reality slipping—like she was unraveling right before everyone's eyes.
Julian got locked up, and the divorce went through without a hitch.
The house we'd bought together—the one we were still paying off, the one that should've been fully ours this year—was just another casualty. By then, we were already long past saving.
I went to see Julian in prison to settle the ownership.
A month had passed since I last saw him, but he looked like he'd aged a decade. Gaunt, pale, eyes hollow—his once-fiery gaze now just a dying ember, flickering with regret.
"I got the divorce papers," I said. "What do we do about the house?"
He was silent for a long moment. A flicker of hope crossed his face, then vanished. "It's in your name. Sell it. Keep everything."
Right. Because back then, he'd insisted the deed be solely under me—his way of making me feel secure. His love had been real once. Too bad the man who'd loved me like that was long gone.
"Okay." I nodded, leaving it at that.
Sometimes, I was grateful for the clean break. It made moving on easier.
"Scarlett." His voice cracked as I turned to leave.
"It's my fault. I'm sorry. I was wrong. I ignored how you felt. I let those so-called friends walk all over you—let them treat you like dirt and never said a damn word. I wanted to stand up for you, but…"
"But you didn't." I turned back, meeting his eyes with a cold smile. "Because you're weak. Pathetic. You couldn't even protect your own wife. You knew how much it hurt me. You had every chance to fix things, to make me stay—but you chose silence."
Julian had stood by while they humiliated me. Worse—sometimes, he'd joined in. In the end, he hurt me more than any of them.
"You don't deserve to be my husband," I said. "And you sure as hell don't deserve to be my child's father."
His sobs followed me as I walked away. I didn't look back.
Back in Lespurg, I threw myself into work. Headquarters was relentless—fast-paced, demanding, exactly what I needed. I worked late every night, too exhausted to think about anything else.
Then, a call from an old friend in Jorway:
"Anne refused to settle. She actually sued Julian. He didn't deny what he did to her, but he's demanding she pay back every cent he ever lent her. Of course, she can't—so now they're tearing each other apart."
She paused. "And Anne? She's getting worse. Some days she's fine. Others, she's completely lost—doesn't even recognize people. And those 'friends' of hers? Gone. Scattered like roaches when the lights come on."
I sighed. Couldn't say I felt sorry for them.
They got exactly what they deserved.
