A few days later, Dominic Valentine and Vincent Roscente were both sentenced to death.
In the ICU, my mother's voice drifted through the fog of my fading awareness. A sharp ache twisted in my chest. Would she be devastated if she knew the lengths I'd gone to for this?
But it didn't matter now.
Margaret Windsor had promised me—a villa and two million dollars in compensation once everything was over. That would have been enough to keep my mother comfortable for the rest of her life.
The screech of hospital bed wheels grated against my ears. I could feel myself slipping away.
Then, cutting through the haze, Margaret's voice reached me—cold, detached—speaking to my mother.
"Mrs. Langley, I can't give you the money or the house. With Annie gone, our agreement is void."
My mother's anguished sob tore through the room. "She did all of this for you! How could you? You heartless monster!"
My breath hitched. Margaret was betraying me—now, after everything?
All of it… for nothing?
My mother would be left with nothing. No money for her treatments. No one to take care of her.
I couldn't leave her. Not like this.
