Ryan's dramatic stunt instantly became the main attraction. Within minutes, a crowd had formed below like spectators at some twisted performance.
The air buzzed with shouts and gasps.
"Don't be stupid, man! She's not worth dying over!"
Then fingers started pointing at me.
"There's that girl too—is she trying to push him off?"
I never pegged Ryan for the dramatic type. My body locked up, fear icing my veins.
It took campus security and three administrators to defuse the situation. Even as they led us away, my mind was still reeling.
The school came down hard on both of us—mandatory counseling for Ryan, and for me? A one-week suspension for "disruptive behavior."
Walking off campus that Friday, a mob of students chased me down, their words hitting like stones.
"School's trash! Go ruin someone else's life!"
"Should've been expelled! You're nothing but trouble!"
My hands shook violently. One stupid night with Ryan had blown up my entire world.
Just when I thought I'd drown in the mess, Vincent called.
His voice sounded gravelly. "You alive? Been dealing with some family shit."
Hearing him broke the dam. Tears came hard and fast. "Where the hell have you been?"
"Easy, kitten. Come meet me. We'll figure this out."
That steady tone grounded me. I followed his directions to a downtown hotel where he'd been staying between trips home.
The moment I saw him, I collapsed against his chest, sobbing until my ribs hurt. His hands started roaming as my crying slowed.
All that tension dissolved under his touch, my body responding before my brain could protest. Just as I was about to lose myself completely, Vincent's face went serious.
"Aren't you curious why I left?"
Perched in his lap, I rolled my eyes. "How would I—? Just shut up and touch me already."
