"But how do we even approach him?" I asked, careful not to mention my previous encounter with Marcus. "He's not exactly the warm-and-fuzzy type."
Luke smirked. "Leave that to me. I've already put out some feelers. Turns out, Marcus is open to a meeting—he's actually interested in a potential partnership."
"Seriously?" I blinked in surprise. "What makes you so sure he's not just stringing us along?"
Leaning in, Luke lowered his voice. "Let's just say I've got a solid source. Rumor has it Marcus is looking to expand into new markets, and he's not above making… unconventional deals to get what he wants."
I nodded, my mind spinning with possibilities. This could be our golden ticket. But dealing with Marcus Smith? That required nerves of steel and a sharp mind.
"Alright, let's do it," I said, steeling myself. "Let's hear what he has to say."
Luke grinned, punching the air. "That's what I'm talking about! We've got this, sis."
Later that night, I retreated to my old bedroom. It was frozen in time—exactly as I'd left it eight years ago. Not a single poster had been touched. Mom had kept it ready, as if she'd always believed I'd come back. The familiarity wrapped around me like a warm, bittersweet hug as I sank into the bed.
Just as my eyes fluttered shut, my phone buzzed. A message from David. Right. Forgot to block him on socials.
"Who's the guy hugging you so tight? You know I don't like you getting cozy with other men, Rosaline."
Attached was a photo of Luke and me at the airport.
I didn't bother replying. Just blocked him—everywhere. Then, remembering Luke's warning about David's company, I called an old colleague. Turns out, David hadn't stepped foot back home since I left. He'd been on a witch hunt, firing employees left and right—everyone except Cinthia. Of course. The pieces clicked: she was probably one of Marcus's plants. But David? Blind as ever.
A cold shudder ran through me. Then I shook it off. That ###Chapter was closed. I wasn't letting him—or anyone—mess with my head again.
The next evening, we arrived at the sleek, high-rise hotel Marcus had chosen. Its glass facade glittered under the sunset, almost mocking how exposed I felt. Luke and I exchanged a tense glance. This meeting could either save our family's business or bury it.
As we stepped into the hallway, a shadow detached itself from the dim lighting. Marcus Smith—tall, imposing, his presence like a physical weight—stood before us.
"Rosaline Coopers," he rumbled, his gaze sharp enough to cut glass. "Pleasure to finally meet you again. Though I must say, you left me waiting for that call."
"Again?" Luke snorted. "You two know each other? Why am I just hearing about this?"
I shot him a shut up look, but Marcus was already speaking, his tone laced with amusement. "Your little airport reunion made quite the splash online. I was… curious about your relationship."
Luke, ever the oblivious hype man, blurted, "Oh, I'm her brother! And don't worry—she's totally single."
Kill me now.
Mortified, I thrust out my hand to cut him off. Marcus's grip was firm, sending an unwelcome jolt down my spine.
"Enough small talk," Marcus said, his focus shifting to Luke. "Let's talk business. Impress me. Why should I partner with the Coopers?"
We followed him into a private lounge. As we settled in, I launched into our pitch—clear, confident, laying out exactly what we brought to the table. Marcus listened, his face unreadable.
When I finished, he leaned back, steepling his fingers. "Sharp. Just like your reputation. But Rosaline… what's in it for me?"
Luke jumped in, smooth as ever. "Think global. Our family's connections? They'll open doors for you in markets you haven't even touched yet. We're talking exclusive access, Marcus."
