"—sorry doesn't cut it," I interrupted, but a shadow fell over us.
David spun to face Marcus, who loomed like a thundercloud. "Leave. Now."
"Or what?" David sneered, though his voice shook. "You're the bastard who infiltrated my company!"
Marcus stepped closer, the air itself seeming to chill. "Your employees sold you out. I just bought what they offered." His hand closed over mine, yanking me away. "She's not property. Touch her again, and you'll regret it."
David shrunk back but spat at me, "He's playing you! He needs you to salvage your company!"
The pieces clicked. "Oh my god," I laughed bitterly. "You didn't come for me—you came because your business is failing without me."
David's silence said everything.
"Get out," I whispered. "Next time, I won't be nice."
After he slunk off, Marcus murmured, "So... not your boyfriend?" He nodded at Luke, now lecturing his security team.
I blinked. "What?"
"Page Six has you two as a power couple." He flashed his phone—a tabloid photo of our airport hug. "Though I did wonder why you'd date someone with such terrible hair."
I snorted. "You read gossip rags?"
"Only when you're in them." His smirk sent heat up my neck.
The following weeks became a blur of contract negotiations and stolen glances. Marcus's intensity was addictive—every debate left me breathless.
Late one night, as paperwork piled around us, Marcus leaned in. "We should celebrate." His thumb brushed my wrist. "Dinner. My place."
When I hesitated, he added, "Just us."
The hunger in his gaze made resistance futile. "Okay," I breathed.
His triumphant grin told me I'd just lost—and maybe didn't mind at all.
