Cinthia's face flushed crimson.
She didn't utter a word—just stood there, pale and rigid, staring at David like a deer caught in headlights. Before I could say anything else, she bolted from the office, leaving David and me alone in a suffocating silence. The air between us crackled with tension.
David turned to me, his eyes wide with disbelief. "What are you trying to prove?"
"It was just a business trip, Rosaline," he added, his dark gaze boring into me.
As if I'd be stupid enough to buy that.
A week earlier, my team had been assigned to secure a new client. I was packing my things when David stormed into my office and stopped me. "It's a week-long trip, Rosaline. The weather's brutal—you know how easily you get sick."
"I know, David," I replied, "but I can't hand this off to anyone else. I have to go."
He grabbed my hands, pulling me close, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. "Not even me?"
I froze. Since when did he talk to me like that?
"Don't worry," he murmured. "I'll handle it."
"Fine," I relented softly. "You're the boss, after all."
That night, I was practically floating. After so long, David was finally showing he cared—worrying about my health, stepping in for me. It meant everything. I helped him pack, made him dinner, and drifted off to sleep with a smile.
Then my phone buzzed.
Cinthia.
Message after message flooded in. The first one read:
[Thanks for backing out of the trip. Gave me the perfect chance to get closer to David.]
Attached was a photo of them at the airport—David carrying her bag like some doting boyfriend.
[I asked him to book the best hotel. Guess what? He got us the honeymoon suite.]
Another photo. The same suite where David and I had our first time. Two condom packets sat mockingly on the nightstand.
My stomach twisted.
[He's so romantic! Surprised me with a candlelit dinner on the beach.]
There they were—smiling, his arm draped around her, the ocean glowing under a canopy of flickering candles.
[And let's just say… he knows exactly how to make me scream.]
The final photo hit like a knife to the chest. A selfie. Skin. Smiles. Betrayal.
I hurled my phone across the room, shaking. Every promise, every "I love you"—all lies.
The receipts in his pocket when he came home sealed it. No denials. No excuses. Just proof.
Now, standing in his office, I met his gaze without flinching.
"I'm not trying to prove anything, David."
A beat of silence.
"I just want to resign."
