                    Delta Isagani's Crush
"Well, what do you say, River?" Alpha King Maxxwell asked, looking at me with his hopeful look. "It's not a bad proposal. After what happened to you, I realized how much you matter to me, River." He held my hand and drew it to his mouth, planting a kiss on it. "I can't live without you."
I clenched my teeth.
No matter how much he put sugar in his words, it would always taste bitter on my ears. How could he?
"River. Say something," he pleaded, his nervousness showing. "Can you bear it for a few more years?"
Before I could stop myself, my palm landed on Maxxwell's cheeks. And before he could react, it landed again on his other cheeks. Hard.
His eyes went round as he stared at me.
"What the "
With my fist on both sides, I muttered, "How many times will you offer me that position, Maxxwell? Do you think I will accept it the second time? It's not enough for you. You're going to divorce the queen after you get married and have kids? What do you want me to feel? Glad? Joyful? Do you want me to jump with joy right now? How about your child? Do you even know what will happen to the child if you will separate from her?"
I made my expression blank.
"I thought..."
"What you thought was wrong. I don't want to be with you if I hurt someone. That's not the kind of relationship I envisioned."
"You don't have any feelings for me?"
"If I did, will it matter? You have a queen." And my sister is on top of that. However, I still did not know how I would change her mind. I was torn between these two. "You have my mark."
My hands went back to my neck. It tingled, especially at a distance between us.
"This mark means nothing. A symbol that I will forever be second." I met his gaze. "So....if you can't change your queen, pretend I did not exist in your life, Maxxwell." 1
"Does the bond mean nothing to you?" 1
"No. Not anymore after throwing me when Zenith arrived." I gave him a fake smile. "Nevertheless, it was all in the past. I moved on, Maxxwell. It no longer hurts. So you can carry on with the Proclamation Ceremony. And appease her."
Maxxwell sighed. "Is that the truth?".
"I am not a liar." Not looking at him, I ordered, "Leave me for a while, Maxxwell. Just looking at you makes my blood boil with anger."
Both of his hands fell to the side. "I'm a bastard. I can't even choose between you and Zenith."
Why was it easier for me to choose you instead of Alpha Erik? I wanted to add.
"Just continue loving her." Until it reaches her heart so that she will change her mind and stop her plans.
"What about you?"
"What about me? We talked about this, Maxxwell. I will return to my pack."
"That's final, then."
"It is." I motioned for the door. "Go now, please. I want to be alone."
He stood.
"Before I go, tell me who attacked you."
My heart skipped a bit. The alpha king was able to notice it.
I thought he already forgot about that.
"N-no one. I k-killed him already."
"Him. A man. Who? We never saw a body. I ordered my warriors to look for the culprit, but they found none."
Damn.
Maxxwell could be stubborn sometimes. He will never stop until he gets the answer.
However, if I told him, he could trace it back to Zenith. She could be in danger all because of me.
"Drop the subject, Maxxwell. That's all in the past. Perhaps someone already took care of the body," I answered calmly.
His eyes glinted. "The past? You were nearly killed because of the poison even after knowing you are my second-chance mate. Someone wanted to wage war against me. Against this kingdom." My hands felt clammy.
My mouth was dying to tell him about Tristan and Zenith, but will he believe me? Knowing their plans against him will destroy him.
"Perhaps that person did not know me. That we are mates, after all, after the rightful queen returned, I made it to the point of becoming a shadow. Plus, we rarely talked. Can we stop talking about this? It will only bring fear in me. Let it slide."
The alpha king fell into deep thought. "No. It only means someone had managed to breach the security of this place. Did you really not know who the person was?"
I felt butterflies in my stomach. When will this man stop questioning me?
"I-it could be an assassin, Your Majesty. Someone furious at me." I shrugged, trying to make it look like it was not serious. "That's okay. Next time, I will never let my guard down, Maxwell."
"I will assign Delta Isagani as your personal guard since the two of you are close enough. I wanted to choose Beta Valentine, but it seemed like the two of you would never get that close." I didn't allow him to see me panicking.
Someone guarding me will only restrict my movements. Talking to Zenith will become more complex.
"No need for that, Maxxwell. Besides, that's the delta of the kingdom we are talking about. Why would you let him guard me? I am nothing."
"I want you to be protected at all times, even if I am not with you."
"But...I can handle myself."
"You can? You were nearly killed. I won't allow that to happen again. So no. You will be with him until I tell him he can stop guarding you." "Fine! If that's what you wish. Just go away, Maxxwell. Let me rest."
The rest of the following days, the palace was getting busier and busier. A couple of days from now will be the Proclamation Ceremony. Tristan and Zenith would carry out their plans. And I still did not know what to do.
Plus, Delta Isagani was not helping me. His presence made me lose my focus. I had to eradicate his company if I wanted to help Maxxwell. But how?
"Delta Isagani, you can go now. You don't have to follow me," I said when I saw him approaching me. He said he was hungry and went to the kitchen. I thought that would be my chance to get away from him, but after ten seconds, he was back.
This was what? His second day of tailing me wherever I go.
My wound was fully healed, but the incident left a scar on my cheeks and leg. I did not mind the scar on my leg but on my cheeks. Every servant would look at my cheeks. It bothered me sometimes.
"Order from the alpha king," was always his reply.
"You can tell him everything is okay," I offered.
I never wanted anyone tailing me as if I was some criminal. Besides, it made me limit my actions. I could no longer follow Zenith and knew her whereabouts.
After making sure I could do fine alone, I changed rooms even if the alpha king insisted on using our previous room.
The heck.
As if I could do that knowing Zenith was possessive of the alpha king. That woman. I did not understand her. How could she act like that if she plans to betray the alpha king? "Not a chance."
I halted walking and faced him. "Delta Isagani. I know you are busy."
"I am. But the alpha king asked me."
"What will I do to change your mind?"
"Nothing."
"How about Dawn?"
His cheeks flushed with red. "D-Dawn? W-what about her?"
"You have a huge crush on her. If you stop bothering me, I will help you with her."
Until now, I had no idea why he was affected by the woman's presence. As far as I knew, they were not mates.
He looked away. "I don't know what you are talking about."
Who would have thought Delta Isagani could be this cute? He looked like a teenager who was busted after knowing he was like someone else.
Serendipity or what, Dawn made an appearance and was coming towards our direction.
"Dawn!" I called her.
"River. Stop fooling me. That won't change my mind," he retorted, thinking I was lying to him.
"Dawn is really here," I whispered beside him.
He exhaled.
"Yes, River?" Delta Isagani froze and turned around. "What's up? Are you okay now? Why did you call me?"
I shrugged but pointed my lips in the man's direction. "Delta Isagani wanted to say something."
"He did?"
"I don't have anything to say, River."
"Yes, he did. Come on, Delta Isagani. Tell Dawn. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," I urged him.
Delta Isagani's face was red as a tomato.
Dawn looked at us. "What are you trying to say, River?"
"Nothing. I want to say that Delta Isagani has a huge crush on you." 1
I heard the man's sharp intake of breath.
