If for the previous days, Zenith was evading my presence, this time, the table had been turned. Whenever I sensed her presence, I would go in the other direction, ensuring our paths would never meet.
Sunflower could be telling the truth. Something happened between the alpha king and me, and I may be carrying his child. Which I hoped wouldn't be the case. That would become the most significant scandal, knowing I was not the official concubine of the alpha king. There had to be a proclamation just like how the queen would be proclaimed. 2
I was hoping for the best that I may not be carrying his child.
Don't get me wrong. I want a child. But not for now.
As days passed, I was getting flashes of what had happened that night. I remembered the alpha king and I were kissing as if there was no tomorrow, and I made the first move. I seduced him with my hands all over him.
The alpha king tried to talk to me, but I had no guts to face him. Besides, what will the two of us talk about? That he was blaming me for what happened?
No. Thank you.
However, there was someone who I was not expecting to meet in the palace-Alpha Erik.
One of the servants knocked on my chamber, told me someone had asked for my presence in the courtyard, and I did go to the place only to see him waiting
for me.
I was nailed to my place.
By the looks of him, it seemed like he was already stressed far enough. Stubbles were forming under his chin. Dark circles around his eyes. His build was becoming leaner.
He sensed my presence and peeked in my direction.
Clearing my throat and feigning I was not surprised, I smiled at him and forced myself to saunter toward him. And stopped a few meters from him.
"Alpha Erik. This is a surprise." A journey in coming here was not that comfortable and safe with the rogues trying to attack every passing carriage. "Are you here for the Proclamation Ceremony? But it will be tomorrow."
"I saw some guests already arriving."
"You did?"
Actually, I had no idea about that. I imprisoned myself in my chamber, and Dawn was kind enough to bring me food.
The queen will become busier, then.
"Yes. But that is not what we will talk about now, River."
Yeah, I know.
The way he looked at me as if he was dying to tell me something gave it away.
"What then, alpha?"
He strolled towards me while glancing back and forth. His eyes seemed like he was afraid someone might see us. But who could that be?
"Please don't tell me you killed someone. I know you have a bastard father, but that is not an excuse for me to follow in his footsteps."
Alpha Erik's eyebrows furrowed. "What are you talking about? I haven't killed someone."
I sighed in relief.
He stopped a mere inch from me and leaned on my ears.
Sunflower waited in the background. She was observing what this man would do.
'Relax. I can handle him.'
'Do not accept him if he wants to take you back. We chose the alpha king. Not him.'
I rolled my eyes at Sunflower and focused my attention on the man.
"Alpha Erik. Do you think this is a good idea to talk alone? If Lady Juliana will find out about this-"
"I broke our marriage proposal. I could not stomach living with someone who did not even love me. Who treated me as if I was her subject. A servant. An enslaved person. She wanted the alpha king. Nobody else," he whispered.
I covered my mouth and looked into his eyes. Those chocolate-brown eyes told me he was not joking.
"What about your father? I imagined Alpha Wade would want to kill you. You were bold when you did that. Only a few had managed to fight against your Father." I patted his shoulders. "Congratulations on gathering your courage. You are now a true man," I teased.
He shrugged his shoulders. "Furious. He whipped me on my back and treated me as if I was his slave instead of his son the way he punished me. He had forgotten himself and nearly killed me. But everything is well between the two of us. We talked."
A shiver ran down my spine as I imagined how Alpha Wade used his whip and hit the man in front of me.
"That must hurt a lot."
He acted nonchalantly. "My wolf helped me heal the wounds."
"But the scar will stay." "That's okay as long as I will not be bound to someone who does not even like me and treats me like dirt."
My heart fell for him. It was good that we were able to look past our differences. Especially his rejecting me.
I sat on the bench and traced the marbles using my fingertips.
"So, let's return to the most important thing right now. Why did you come here and act as if you do not want someone to hear us?"
He sat beside me.
"Father is planning to overthrow the kingdom and seize the throne," he said as fast as he could and nearly did not catch some words.
I whipped my head in his direction.
My blood went cold as my heart hammered against my chest.
"Are you sure about that?"
He nodded and looked at the sky.
Oh, my gods.
"Did someone recruit him?" I asked. I looked around. No one was with us. However, we must not let our guard down. "Let's continue talking somewhere
safe."
I grabbed his hands and pulled him. Bolts of electricity ran between our connected hands.
Alpha Erik momentarily stopped and looked at our hands.
"The bond is still here," he said, his voice sad.
"It won't disappear easily like that."
"I regretted rejecting you."
"That's all in the past," I answered and dragged him into our bedchamber. Dawn was not around.
I sighed in relief.
Alpha Erik looked around. "Is this your room? This is not fancy."
"I don't need something beautiful but comfortable to sleep. I no longer shared the room with the alpha king. The queen came back. Let's continue what we
had talked about, shall we? Spill everything."
His expression turned serious. "As I said, he wanted to overthrow the alpha king. He wanted more power and desire to rule all the alphas."
"Oh, Moon Goddess. When will it happen?"
"During the Proclamation Ceremony."
Like Zenith's plan.
"I thought it was the rogues who wanted to seize the throne?" With the help of the queen, of course.
"They did. But Tristan and my father had agreed on something. The rogues will reside in the palace and be given ranks and jobs. They will be treated as
normal citizens, and all their sins against the kingdom will be wiped out."
"That would never happen. The rogues can no longer redeem themselves. They are always out for blood and will do everything to destroy the palace. I did
not know the other details, but that's their plan. Their blood is already dark because of their sins."
"Unfortunately, Father did not share your opinions. He will use anyone to push his plan."
Damn.
The more it would be challenging to help the alpha king.
Something clicked in my brain, and I faced him. He was already on my bed, sitting on it.
"Wait. Why are you telling me this? Your Father is Alpha Wade. Telling me this will jeopardize their plan. They might kill you."
"The same thing with what the queen plans to do with you? Kill you. How long did you know the two of you are sisters, huh?"
I sucked in a breath as I looked at his penetrating gaze. There were no judgments or anything-just pure curiosity.
I looked away. "How did you know that? Only Tristan, the leader of the rogues, and Zenith know that we are siblings."
Alpha Erik gave me a blank look. "You and the queen are practically photocopies of each other's faces, except the hair. One may think the two of you are
siblings or twins. I already saw her before and told myself you two were like siblings. The others also know about it and bully you more. They cannot accept
that someone like you resembles the queen."
I balled my fist.
"That did not answer my question, Alpha Erik. How?"
He bit his fingernails which he usually does whenever he is nervous. "I saw the queen two days ago and heard Father and her talking."
Oh, Zenith. What have you done? Until when will you stop?
"What's your plan?" I asked him.
He exhaled his breath. "Nothing."
My eyes went wide.
"Nothing? They will create a bloodbath, Alpha Erik. If you do not do anything, they will succeed. You are an alpha. You swore your allegiance to the alpha
king. Not to your father. You have to help the alpha king."
"How about you, River?" "What about me?"
"What did you do to help the alpha king?"
My brows furrowed as I watched him. "The way you say it seems like your words have more weight."
"You know the queen's plan, yet you do not do anything about it. How different are you from me?"
