Top Priority
I clenched my fist. "I will always choose the alpha king. I am not like you, who let fear get over him. I will fight with the alpha king in the end."
He stared at me for a moment. As if sensing I was not wavering, he stood. "You have chosen your side."
"So do you."
Alpha Erik craned his neck from side to side. "Is that your final decision?"
"It was always my decision," I said with finality. "If the alpha king dies, I will die."
If we cannot be together in this lifetime, perhaps after death.
"Your loyalty to him is....amazing." Was that hurt I was seeing in his eyes? "I regretted rejecting you back then and seeing how strong you are."
The crowd clapped their hands to the queen. "Everything is already in the past."
He exhaled. "You are right. As of this moment, we are enemies. Please do not forgive me after this. I deserve all the hate."
I grabbed his hands and whispered harshly, "Alpha Erik, you can still change your mind."
"There is no turning back now." And he left my table.
My strength left me, and slightly hit my head on the table.
Why did it have to become this way? Alpha Erik and I were now on good terms, but why did we have to be back as enemies?
"What happened to that man? Stop hitting the table, River!" Someone scolded me.
I stopped and glanced at the newcomer.
Dawn was back, with the beta and delta tailing her. Both men were holding plates on their own, packed with their food. Delta Isagani's cheeks were tainted with red, while Beta Valentine's eyes looked like they could kill his enemies. Despite that, the two looked dashing as ever, and every unmated female was looking in their direction, but the two were oblivious to it.
"Why did you bring them here? Aren't they standing beside the alpha king?"
Dawn shrugged her shoulders and gave me a glass of juice. Strawberry juice, to be exact.
"I don't know with them. They forced themselves on my company. Hey, mutt and delta. Don't you have anything to do? Others might think you are my lap dog, especially you, Beta Valentine."
"I'm not a mutt, leech. The queen said she wanted the alpha king on her own and did not want to see us."
Dawn rolled her eyes at Beta Valentine.
I groaned. They will fight again. "What about you, Delta Isagani?"
I wonder if he had seen Lady Juliana. I saw her earlier as if she was going to cry as she watched the scene unfold.
"Ladies and gentlemen." The queen clicked the spoon and metal glass she was holding.
Everyone stopped talking and turned their attention to the front.
The alpha king looked like he was going to pee. His expression was grim.
"Thank you for joining us with this joyful celebration of my Proclamation Ceremony," she started. She put down the glass and spoon, and both of her hands were now on her chest. She said, "You don't know how much this means to me after that unfortunate event of me nearly being driven to my death."
The crowd became even more silent, sharing the queen's pain.
Zenith's eyes hardened as her gaze shifted to mine.
I did not know if she had plans to make me jealous, but she grabbed the alpha king's hand and wrapped it around her waist.
"Thankfully, the alpha king had already punished everyone who took part in my assassination attempt, silencing them forever. Isn't King Maxxwell sweet?" She leaned on the alpha king's chest and kissed him on his cheeks. Maxxwell's eyes widened.
"Your queen is showing too much affection, mutt," Dawn muttered, clogging the content of her glass. "She is making my skin crawl. Insecure much? No one will take the alpha king away from her."
Beta Valentine folded his arms in front of his chest. "Only the alpha king can choose his queen. We do not have the right to do that. The only thing we can do is support him."
"Not me. I don't like her," Dawn replied, showing her disgust. "I will choose my own queen, and that is River. No one else."
"L-Luna D-Dawn. The queen can hear you," Delta Isagani said. "Let's not ruin her day."
"She can eavesdrop as long as she wants," Dawn challenged without batting an eye.
Dawn scoffed. "Since when did the two of you lose your balls? Don't you see that your queen looked like she was planning something evil? Isn't it right, River?"
My heart skipped a beat. There was nothing to hide when it came to Dawn.
"W-what are you talking about, Dawn?" I asked and gulped the content of the juice. I felt thirsty all over. The dress was suffocating.
The queen continued her monologue until a priest stepped forward and replaced her. This was the part where she would swear her allegiance to the throne. Which, of course, would be nothing but a lie. "Tell them the truth, River."
My heart forgot how to pump blood. "W-what truth?"
I moved on my seat as the desire to run away from Dawn overcame me. However, Sunflower suddenly became interested and listened to the woman.
"The truth about the queen."
Wait.
How did she know it? I was sure no one knew about our relationship except Tristan, Alpha Erik, Alpha Wade, and Zenith.
"Tell her the truth. The luna, the beta, and the delta could be your greatest alley. You can stand a chance, River. You can protect the alpha king,' Sunflower urged.
Beta Valentine looked at me, his confusion showing. "Fill me the details, River. What is the leech talking about?"
Dawn suddenly kicked his leg under the table, glaring at the beta. The beta cried in pain, grabbing a few visitors' attention, then muttered a few curses which silenced the others who were irritated at him. "What was that for?"
Dawn grinned. "Nothing. I feel like kicking you. Your face is getting irritating in my eyes. I prefer gazing at the delta's face than a mutt like yours. If it is not too much to ask, would you like to look for an empty table?"
Beta Valentine's face went bright red. "As if sitting with you does not already feel torture." He stood. "May I continue annoying you for the rest of your stay in the palace?" He stood. "I'll excuse myself-❞ "No! Don't!" I exclaimed and, to my panic, grabbed the beta's wrist.
Dawn raised her brows and watched me. "Let him go, River. The mutt does not deserve our attention."
I stubbornly shook my head. "Now is not the best time to separate. Please stay here for a moment, Beta Valentine. Let's protect the alpha king to the best of our abilities."
"Why? Was I correct earlier? Is someone plotting to kill the alpha king? I was only bluffing earlier, River."
The beta and the delta's eyes shifted at me. Their expressions turned serious.
"Whatever you know about any plans of jeopardizing the alpha king's safety, you should tell us about it. As his beta and second-in-command, I order you to tell me." "River?" Delta Isagani asked, using his soft voice. "I hate to tell you this, but the king's safety is our top priority. If you know something, tell us about it."
