I forgot how to breathe as I watched how the tip of the alpha king's sword shook as he continued pointing it at my sister.
"No!" The alpha king's eyes widened when he realized it was me. "Please, Your Majesty. She is your mate."
Killing your mate looked like you were burying yourself. However, the alpha king had no issues with it.
The alpha king's moniker suddenly flashed in my mind.
Black Heart.
Looking at him now made me agree with that name.
His eyes were unwavering. Like he was set on punishing the brainchild of the creator of this mess.
"I don't have a mate who is a betrayer."
Kneeling beside my sister, I held her shoulders while looking at the alpha king, begging to spare her.
Blood dripped from the alpha king's wounds on his face, but it seemed like the alpha king did not even bother about it.
"Stay away from the betrayer, River," he said, his voice void of any emotions.
Maxxwell always showed his affection toward Zenith. Of how he mattered so much in his life. Of how he loved her.
But now...all he felt towards my sister was hatred. Intense hatred which could not be forgiven regardless of how many times Zenith groveled. Which I doubted she would do.
If Zenith does not ask for forgiveness, I will.
"Y-your Majesty. Please spare the queen-"
"She is no longer the queen!" he roared, cutting off my words. "She betrayed the kingdom. Me. And her people whom she swore to protect."
Zenith remained calm beside me. Unbothered.
"Your Majesty, please!"
The sword shifted back to my throat. I could feel the cold and pointy edge pricking my skin.
I gulped as fear gripped my chest.
Would the alpha king kill me because of the queen's sins?
Something suddenly was in my front. Dawn. She winced when the tip sliced her arms. "Your Majesty, River is not our enemy."
The alpha king's body shook, his eyes becoming red. "Anyone who defended the betrayer is also my enemy."
My eyes bulged. "I am mere-"
Glancing over her shoulder, Dawn shook her head.
I was surprised when Beta Valentine went to my side, only to find out he was guarding the queen. His current situation showed how he defended the alpha king to the best of his abilities. He was no better than the alpha king. In fact, he was the worst. His once fancy clothes were torn. His legs were bleeding. A bandage wrapped around his stomach.
I craned my neck.
How about Delta Isagani? Where was that man? Please don't tell me something happened to him.
"We have a common enemy here, Your Majesty. As far as I know, it is not River. She is defending her sister because that is what she should do," Dawn explained. She touched her forehead. "Please, Your Majesty. River is innocent."
The alpha king glared at me. "Are you, River? Or did you only toy with me? Did you have fun while trusting you without me knowing you were plotting with your sister to overthrow me?" he spat. "You disgust me." 1
"I never did anything you say. The Moon Goddess knows I attempted to change my sister's mind. You know for a fact I also tried to tell you about it, but what did you say? The queen will never do anything absurd because this is her moment. And now that you found out I was telling the truth, you put all the blame on me? What kind of bullshit is that, Your Majesty?" 1
"Lies!" he spat. "The two of you are good at manipulating me. You used the bond to your advantage. Just seeing the two of you makes me sick."
Zenith suddenly laughed. "I had fun, Your Majesty. I had fun toying with your emotions and telling my lies. Telling you how much you mean to me. But you know what? The mere sight of you sickened me to the core."
The alpha king pushed Dawn and me aside and was back, pointing his sword at Zenith. As if taunting him more, Zenith leaned forward, pricking her soft skin, drawing blood. "What are you waiting for, Your Majesty? Kill me with your hands until the nightmare about my death attacks you every day. That would make my death meaningful."
"Zenith! Will you stop it? Can't you see I am trying to save your life?" I snapped.
The woman scoffed. "Why would you save me, woman?"
"You may be a bitch, but I treat you as my sister. So please shut up and don't get yourself killed, okay? I don't want to be completely alone." 1
Zenith sighed and looked at the ceiling. "My poor sister who believed in happy endings. I will die after this. We failed in overthrowing the alpha king despite him not knowing about it. Our preparations were lacking."
"What if I believed in happy endings? You don't have the right to make fun of me," I retorted, while the tears won't stop flowing from my eyes. Oh, goddess. Please save my sister. "I want to feel how it feels to have a sister. A family. Is that wrong?"
Was this the end between us?
Beta Valentine went to the alpha king's side and whispered something. The alpha king looked at him while his expression remained the same-furious over his mate's betrayal.
Zenith smiled sadly. "Fool. Don't you know I chose revenge over you? I am willing to die."
The alpha king took his step forward, and I instantly covered Zenith using my body and positioned myself in front of her.
"Step aside," he ordered.
I shook my head. "M-make me. I would never allow you to hurt her. If you want to kill her, kill me first."
Dawn yanked me away from Zenith. "River! Do not say something which you do not mean."
"I mean everything. Despite what she has done, I will side with my sister."
"River! Zenith is a betrayer! If you continue taking her side, you will be branded as a betrayer. The alpha king will punish you."
I shifted my gaze at the alpha king.
Still, his face was emotionless. He looked scary carrying that bloody sword. How many rogues had it killed?
"I believe that Zenith has something good in her. If there weren't, there would be no chance she would spare me."
Zenith laughed again. "Fool. Mother and Father will be disappointed in you."
"The leech is right, River. We are giving you one last time. Stay away from the betrayer, and you will be spared from receiving any punishment. Nevertheless, if you continue siding with her, we will also kill you
with them. Mind you. You cannot use your relationship with the alpha king. King Maxxwell had decided. Justice must prevail."
