Warning: Violence Ahead.
If I had to embarrass myself and beg a couple of times to change the alpha king's heart, I would. Just to save Zenith.
"Your Majesty, please. Don't make me choose." Tears fell from my eyes. Not crocodile tears, but real tears.
"River. You don't have to cry for me," Zenith said in the background. She sat on the floor. And now I realized she was wounded in her leg. The wound was deep and glaring at me. She was injured, but how could she kneel earlier?
Oh, Moon Goddess. I wanted to throw up.
Maxxwell returned the bloody sword to the sheath. His eyes told me all. He thought I also betrayed him. Final.
"No. You pick your side," he answered. "There are only two sides to the coin. It's either head or tail. Your sister opted for the other side. How about you?"
I shook my head. "Why does everyone want me to handpick?"
"Because that's the way it is in the palace," Beta Valentine answered for the alpha king. "The alpha king does not take lightly against anyone who dares to bring harm to the kingdom and his people. No one will be spared, be it his mate or not."
Zenith snorted.
I stared at her with wide eyes. Did she want to die that bad?
"Oh, come on. Kill me now, Maxxwell. Just like how your alpha king killed our parents mercilessly. Because that's what you are good at-killing the weak. Killing the weak," she taunted.
'I am giving you one last chance.' I stiffened when I heard the alpha king's voice in my mind. My gaze shifted at him, but his back was turned against us. His shoulders were tense as if any moment from now, he would explode.
'Zenith is your mate,' I uttered in a softer tone. 'I knew she committed treason, but is it necessary to kill her?'
'I do not need a snake in my life. I was willing to be with her. To forget you for her sake because she is my queen. But what did she do?'
I showered Maxxwell's mind with warmth, hoping it would change his mind. 'Do you believe I took part in their plan?'
Long agonizing silence.
I paled.
'I do.'
I stepped back and felt sick. It seemed like my world crumbled in front of me. What was the point of siding with Maxxwell if there was no longer trust between us? I should have told him sooner.
'You do.'
'I do,' he repeated.
I ran towards Zenith's side and used my body to shield her. "I chose my sister, Beta Valentine."
Beta Valentine's gaze narrowed while Dawn gasped and looked at the beta. "Mutt, I swear to the Moon Goddess that River takes no part in the queen's plan. Don't do anything reckless. You will regret it, especially since she could be carrying-"
"Dawn!' I said, stopping her from saying any more nonsense. "Let them carry out the justice they are talking about."
"I won't just stand while the mutt kills you!"
"Beta Valentine, if you kill my sister, you have to kill me first," I muttered, gathering all my courage.
Someone tugged my dress. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw Zenith holding a dagger in her throat. My eyes widened at the thought of what she might do.
"Zenith. Don't do anything foolish. The alpha king will change his mind."
"He won't. I assure you of that, River. But the rogues were already wiped out. I did not know what happened to the bastard alpha. I am all alone."
"That's not true. You have me. I got your back."
Zenith smiled genuinely.
"Stop, dear sister. You do not have to sacrifice your life over me." She glanced at the alpha king whose back was to us. "Maxxwell," she started. "It is true that River did not betray you. It is I who urged her to take part, but she refused to. You will never kill her nor harm her." She glanced at me and threw me a sad smile. "Goodbye, River. See you in the afterlife." And before I could react, she slit her throat in front of us. And she fell with a pool of blood around her.
No!
I heard myself screaming at the top of my lungs until my throat hurt. Until no voice would come out. I found myself sobbing as I saw my sister's lifeless body, with her eyes wide open. Dawn was at my side, trying to yank me from running to her body.
I heard voices. The alpha king and beta were talking, but I could not determine what they were talking about. Did not even care.
Dawn attempted to shield my eyes from the sight, but it was already too late. The memory of my sister taking her own life will forever remain in my memory. And it was all because of the alpha king. 2
My legs wobbled as I tried to stand, with my goal of avenging my sister. However, my vision was already blurred from crying too much. Seeing the alpha king barking orders at the beta, I closed the distance between us and slapped him hard. And hit him again until my palms hurt.
Maxxwell remained emotionless, letting me hit him.
"Are you happy now? Are you celebrating that the betrayer is already gone?" I asked, my voice trembling while my throat hurt from screaming too much. "Black Heart. That's what you are," I spat. Maxxwell's expression was hard as a stone. "Yes. I am. If she did not die, I would finish her myself."
"Fuck you!" I cursed and threw some punches at his chest. "I hate you! Everything is your fault!"
"River. I know you are hurting...but also the alpha king."
I stopped and glared at Dawn. Wiping my tears angrily, I pointed my hands at her and declared, "You should be defending me. Not that killer."
She held her hands in the air and sauntered towards me. Slowly. "The alpha king is not our enemy. The rogues and the rest of the werewolves who wanted to overthrow the alpha king."
I stepped back away from them. "You are all the same. How could you, Maxxwell? You drive her to her death!"
"Zenith chose her path, River. She already planned what she would do."
"No!" I screamed. "You murdered her! Then, you will kill me next." My hands fell on my side. The reality that I was alone hit me hard. What kind of fuck up life was this? The Moon Goddess did not care for me. At all. If she did, she would never be this cruel. If that's the case, then... "Do whatever you want. I don't care. You take away the only remaining family I have."
Maxxwell gritted his teeth. "Is that what you want?"
Courageously even if my knees were shaking, I lifted my chin and met his gaze. "Yes. Do whatever you want."
"Beta Valentine!"
The beta was on his side. "Yes, Your Majesty."
"Burn all the bodies of the traitors. Every last one of them. Including that woman," he declared, referring to the previous queen.
Beta Valentine sighed. "What about our people, Your Majesty?"
"Bury all our fallen comrades. As of this woman," he said, referring to me. "I want her out of my sight. Bring her to the auction house. To Henderson. And let the man do whatever he wanted with her. If he wants to sell her, tell him I do not care."
Dawn sucked in a breath. "Your Majesty! That's too much! River is innocent! You will regret this."
I scoffed. "Is that the worst thing you could do, Your Majesty?" I balled my fist. 1
"River."
"I, River Williams, reject the alpha king, His Majesty King Maxxwell as my mate."
