It Is Done
Alpha King Maxxwell
The beast was howling inside, feeling the pain of the severing of ties. Despite that, my heart and my wolf were calling for River. Zenith died, but Denaro was more affected by what happened to the other woman.
I never expected someone would reject me. I was the alpha king-the king of the kingdom of Vernice. Only River had the guts to reject me without batting an eye.
To say I was offended was an understatement.
'You are fooling yourself, Maxxwell. Who says you are offended? Your pride and ego won't accept that you are dying inside because of losing two mates.'
I inhaled deeply as I watched the sunset ahead of me. The sun's rays looked like blood splattered all around the sky. Just as how real blood decorated the Great Hall.
Images of the gruesome scenery flashed in my mind.
'Are you listening to me?'
'Yeah, I am listening,' I answered curtly to make him shut up. The last thing I wanted was to hear whining from him.
'Go after her!' Denaro growled as a single tear dropped from his eyes. 'I will die if something happens to her."
Denaro's pain, my pain. The connection will not fade until we die.
'Wipe that tear from your eyes. An alpha king never cried,' I declared while facing the destruction that the rogues and Zenith had done. The burned houses of my warriors replaced the once lively sight of their home. I had to console the families they left. Later. After I took hold of my emotions right now.
'You are weak. My wolf is not like that.'
Denmark roared.
I scoffed.
I was blind to all of Zenith's plans. I never thought she would betray me like this. I thought we were okay. It turned out that giving her almost everything was not enough for her. In the end, Zenith chose to destroy this kingdom I protected during my reign.
I balled my fist and rested it on the railings of the balcony.
'Showing my emotion will never make me weak if it's for my mate.'
'River is a betrayer like her sister. Will you wait for her to follow in her sister's footsteps? The other neighboring kingdom might be laughing at us now after knowing my own mates deceived me.'
'River did not betray us!' he roared. 'I trust her. She is different from Zenith. Maxxwell, if something ever happened to her, you will regret it.'
'I beg to disagree. They were waved in the same cloth. The same blood of the betrayed ran in their veins.'
How could Denaro easily choose whom he wanted to mate for life while it took me a while to choose between them?
That was a kick in my gut.
A knock echoed, and the door swung open. The twins came into view. Their hesitant steps faltered for a moment before they decided to find me on the balcony. There were bruises on their faces. But it seemed they were fine. The bruises would heal, but not the pain of Zenith's betrayal.
"Your Majesty," they said in unison and could not look me in the eyes.
"What? I told you I don't want to talk to anyone except if it's a life and death situation," I roared.
They stepped back out of fear.
They gulped, and they glanced at each other as if they did not know if they wanted to pursue what they had planned.
"We stopped him, but he did not want to listen."
"What?" I barked. "Who is foolish enough not to listen to me?"
"Delta Isagani wanted o have an audience with you."
Delta Isagani. River's acquaintance. The closeness between the two was like that of an enemy turned into a closer friend.
I had an idea of what he wanted to say.
"Tell him I am resting and that I do want anyone to disturb-"
Suddenly, the door burst open, and Delta Isagani came. His breathing was labored. Blood dried on his body. He was a mess. But he did not care. He cared for River. Nevertheless, that won't save River from the fate that would befall her after being sold.
"Your Majesty. Can I talk to you?"
The twins spun around and saw the delta trembling.
"I am tired. Let's talk tomorrow," I answered, dismissing him.
I could not sleep, no matter how much I tried. My thoughts always fall on the betrayers.
Idiot. I knew I was.
Delta Isagani sauntered towards me. His eyes told me he would do everything to save the woman. "River is leaving."
'No!' Denaro shouted in the background. 'Go after them, Maxxwell!'
Muting him, I focused my attention on the delta. "Which should be happening right now. I gave my orders. It was done."
Delta Isagani looked at the ceiling and came back to me. His eyes watered.
My brows furrowed.
"Your Majesty, please think about this a couple of times. If you bring River to the auction house, she will be treated again as a slave. She will be maltreated, and worse, her new master will kill her." I fell silent for a moment, and fear hugged me.
She betrayed me, the other part of me said. With that thought, I brushed away that figuring emotion.
River will be sold.
My eyes turned into slits. "Why are you defending her?"
The delta's hands fidgeted. "River is my friend. She is the only one who understood my feelings when Lady Juliana rejected me."
"If you want, you can go with her. I don't care. Defend her with all you want. Buy her. Just do not let me see her face, or I will kill her." The twins' mouths fell open.
The delta's face hardened. "That's not what I am trying to do here."
I stared at him with boredom. "What then?"
"Remove your order. Cancel it."
"Now, you are ordering your king. No. She must be punished for hiding her sister's plan."
His eyes went wide. "Hide? She never-"
"This conversation is done. Escort the delta out."
"Your Majesty!"
"Out!"
River Williams
The carriage was leading us to the auction house. I was already familiar with the terrain after going there once.
Roughly a few hours from now, I will be meeting my new master.
Beta Valentine was silent beside me. But I saw him glancing at me a hundred times, which was already annoying.
The beta only cleaned himself a little, and off we went. Dawn forced me to wear something new even if it was no longer necessary. When I reach the auction house, Master Henderson will ask someone to strip me and check my body, and after that, they will prepare me for the next auction, which would probably happen two days from now.
My head cocked to the side.
Everything was gray now, based on my point of view. There was no reason to be alive. Nevertheless, I believe my sister gave her life to save me, and I must take care of this.
The future was becoming bleak.
"Are you hungry?"
My scowl deepened. "I am your prisoner. Not your friend. Stop being kind to me."
"I am only following the alpha king's order."
"I know."
"Did you take part in the uprising?"
I scoffed and leaned on the seat. "Does the truth matter now? The alpha king had already given his verdict."
Beta Valentine's lips pressed into a thin line. "You are right. It does not. If you don't need anything, you can close your eyes. I will awaken you when we get there."
"I must be dying."
"Why?"
"They said other people will be naturally good at you when you are dying. That's what you are doing right now."
"Whatever. If you don't want to sleep, I will do that."
"You're not afraid I will run away?"
"If you did, I would catch you. I am one of the best hunters of the alpha king. No one can escape from me. If you plan to do that, give your best shot." The expression in his eyes told me he would do that. I sighed and closed my eyes. "I don't have any plans."
"Good. That's a wise decision."
After a couple of hours of sitting, we reached the auction house. Recognizing the carriage from the alpha king's ownership, Master Henderson welcomes the beta with his broad smile.
"It is my pleasure that you have revisited this place, Beta Valentine. Will you repurchase another slave? I have a lot of options for you. All are beautiful and hardworking. Come, come." I wondered what kind of hard work they would do.
Does it matter now? Perhaps my new master will make me his new pet or, worse, sex slave.
A shiver ran down my spine.
"No. I am not doing that."
"You came here?" I asked.
"When we bought the previous queen."
"Excuse me for interrupting. But isn't the current queen the one you bought a couple of years ago?"
Ah. The beta was with the alpha king and witnessed how the king found his mate.
"She is no longer the queen. The kingdom of Vernice no longer has a queen."
Master Henderson's eyes widened. "Terrible."
"It's for the best. I came here to give this woman."
"This woman?" he asked. His eyes flooded with recognition. "This woman brought a slave from me."
"Who is the slave?"
I shrugged nonchalantly. "Who else? Dawn."
"Are you sure this woman will be sold? She carries the alpha king's mark. I don't want to receive any punishment from the alpha king."
Looking down at the man, I replied, "Do not worry anymore. This mark will soon fade. I rejected him."
He stifled a laugh. "You rejected the alpha king? Do you think highly of yourself?"
"Even a slave will reject him for being an asshole."
Master Henderson's mouth fell open.
