"That's enough, River. Maligning the alpha king will not help you."
"It will give me the satisfaction of hurting him even more. Do you know what I want to do with your alpha king? I want to rip his throat and crush him with my hands."
Beta Valentine gritted his teeth. "That's enough."
"Does it hurt hearing it from me? I told him once, but he would never believe me!"
"That's enough, I said!" the beta raised his voice.
Master Henderson's eyes darted back and forth between Beta Valentine and me. "Is there something I have to know?"
"Nothing except you will sell this woman. As soon as possible. The alpha king wanted her to be gone from his sight."
Master Henderson's brows furrowed. "This woman is not a slave, Beta. Only slaves are sold here."
"She is. No more questions. Another more question and I will cut off your tongue."
Like his master.
The man paled.
Master Henderson stepped back. "My apologies. If she's clean, I will make sure she will be sold. These past few days, the vampires are always been checking for a new face. This woman will be a good choice."
Vampires. Those blood-sucking assholes who would dry their victims' blood? I never encountered one.
"A werewolf's blood tasted like poison to them," the beta commented. "So why?"
"Some adopted and wanted to try something new. Besides, they paid a lot."
The beta threw me a look, his concern slipping away.
"If I am lucky, they will make my death quick," I said calmly.
The beta muttered a lengthy curse. But I was able to make out the words fault and alpha king.
"I...I will leave now," the beta bade goodbye.
"He's in a hurry," I commented while shrugging my shoulders.
He sure cut off the conversations as fast as he could. He gave me one last look and turned his back to me, uttering the words, "Forgive me."
What was there to forgive when he only followed his master's orders?
"You were not what you made me believe," Master Henderson mentioned when we were alone.
Throwing my gaze at Master Henderson, I smirked. "I guess I was able to fool you."
He pursed his mouth in a self-satisfied smirk. "You will no longer smile like that the moment I sell you. Follow me, woman. I will ask someone to prepare you for the next auction."
Ah. The next option. Welcome, my doom.
"When is that?" I inquired.
"Tomorrow. You are strangely calm for someone to be sold. The slaves are not this kind of calm. They will resist. Try to escape. Or kill themselves to evade the fate that will befall them. Perhaps you think the
alpha king will change his mind and get you back?" he asked.
I scowled at him.
I was sure the alpha king would never change his mind after my sister's betrayal and rejection. He was proud and arrogant.
"He will not change his mind. I am just thinking that running away is pointless."
"You're smart."
"I'm illiterate, and I am not smart. I'm only saying this to you so that my new master will know beforehand I have no use for him."
"Your body can be of use. Or, if you are lucky, a vampire will come here and buy you. You will become his blood bank. His food until he emptied the last drop of your blood from your body."
Master Henderson was trying to scare me. And he did a fine job.
A shiver ran down my spine, and reality slowly sank in.
Nevertheless, a vampire as a new master would be better than seeing the alpha king. He would only bring the painful memories of my sister's death right before my eyes. I wanted to forget everything, and if I
met someone who had the ability to erase memories, I would trade everything I had to make it happen.
The pain was too much.
Master Henderson led the way and followed him after.
The auction house was a gloomy face, housing all the negative energies and emotions from all the slaves who had come here. Master Henderson tried to hide it by planting beautiful flowers in the garden, but the
atmosphere remained the same.
"How many slaves have you solved so far?"
"That's no longer of your concern."
"It is. I want someone to humor me."
He glanced over his shoulders, his eyebrows furrowed. "You ask a lot."
"I have my mouth."
"You are one of the servants whom I will not forget, especially if you are wearing that face. The face of the previous queen."
I fell silent at the mention of my sister.
My chest tightened, and my breathing labored. "Let's...not talk about the queen." My heart felt like it was stabbed a million times.
"Are you sisters?"
"Confirmed," I whispered. I smiled after, trying to mask the hurt I felt. "Consider yourself lucky. Knowing my ties with the alpha king and queen, you can sell me for a hefty sum."
We turned into a corner and stopped at his office. Dawn's image when she looked like a skeleton resurfaced in my mind.
A beautiful woman was sitting on a desk, writing something.
"You're the new record keeper?"
"Obviously," Master Henderson answered.
We stopped at the woman's desk. She looked up, and her eyes softened upon looking at me. "I'm not dead, so don't give me that look. I hated it."
"Sorry," the woman apologized.
"The recordkeeper will ask anything about her before we will prepare her."
Master Henderson left me with the woman, slamming the door shut. She jumped in surprise, clutching her chest.
"S-sorry about that."
"Don't be sorry. We are both slaves. Treat me like a slave because we are both like that. Ask me what you want."
The woman asked me about my name. My birthplace. My parents and everything that she needed to know. I filled out all the details, not leaving anything. I wanted someone to know that I existed, even if it was
only history.
As I thought everything was done, the woman uttered, "Do you want to escape? I assure you that your fate will be sealed once you are presented and sold. You can still escape, Your Grace."
"I am not of noble blood."
"But you bear the alpha king's mark."
"Haven't you heard what I said earlier? I rejected the alpha king. He is mad at me, and I am returning the same feeling. We don't have anything for each other but hate and hatred."
The woman opened her mouth but closed it again. "You will regret this."
"I won't. As much as possible, I wanted to be far away as possible from the alpha king so that he could never trace me. I am also asking you a favor even if we are still strangers."
"What is that, Your Grace?"
"I am not the queen."
She sighed. "What is it?"
"Being the record keeper of the auction house, you are the one who would also record what will happen during the auction."
She nodded. "You are right."
I gave her a small smile. "If someone will buy me, please do not record whoever it is. I wanted to keep it that way."
