                    Changing His Mind
River Williams.
If I were the only one being auctioned, it would be okay for me. But the others...why did it feel like I had to save them? That the responsibility was on my shoulders? "I'm scared," Dolly opened up.
"Shhh." I rubbed her back and thought of any words that would console her.
I felt the tremors of her body.
Suddenly the door burst open. It was Dion again, wearing his apologetic look. He hesitated as he watched everyone.
"Why are you here?"
Dion stared at me. "Master Henderson is asking you to prepare yourselves. Any attempt to run away will be killed on sight."
The women wailed.
Dion shuddered. Pain exploded in his eyes, watching the women. "I'm sorry. I'm only the messenger."
Messenger.
That was why he was always around. Was he also a slave like us?
Dolly suddenly grabbed my hand. "Please? There is no time."
Shaking my head, I backed away from her. "No one will help us."
"The alpha king?"
"He won't." Only a miracle will change his mind.
Dolly looked away and went to Chiyo's side. The two hugged each other, and we waited for someone to call us without having any idea who would be our new masters.
Oh, Moon Goddess. Are you even listening now? I don't want to be saved, but these women...If only you saved them, that would be enough.
Alpha King Maxxwell
"Your Majesty. Please. Are you even listening to us?"
My eyes squinted as I watched the delta and his woman...no. It was not his woman. His mate was Lady Juliana. However, their closeness was uncanny. Was it the traitor's friend? She was flapping her hands like crazy while blabbering her mouth with words I did not want to hear.
"I am," I answered flatly. "You wanted me to go after the auction house."
They were asking the impossible.
"Precisely. Today is the auction day. The auction house would be visited by all kinds of evil men who wanted slaves for themselves. Who knows what kind of bastard will buy River? River would be helpless!"
They were saying the same thing over again. Irritating as fuck.
"Do you think I care?"
The woman's eyes widened. Good. That will make her speechless.
"Delta. Why are you here aside from mentioning the traitor?"
I was in my office, busy doing some paperwork, when they entered. After the revolt, the palace went back to normal. Every damage on the interior and exterior was fixed, forcing everyone, even the guards, to work. I did not want to see any evidence of the attacks.
I ensured no one would spout nonsense about what had happened after the Proclamation Ceremony.
All the dead bodies were either burned or buried in the proper burial place.
"She is your mate!" the woman uttered in disbelief as she looked at the delta. "How could you fathom sitting here as if nothing happened while she is on the brink of being sold, Your Majesty? You don't have a heart."
Did this woman forget her friend rejected me?
"What if I don't? She rejected me. It only means one thing. She did not want me to meddle with her affairs."
"I understand, Your Majesty. Dawn. Let's go."
"Shut up, Isagani. You understand, but I don't. For once in your life, stand for what you believe! Don't blindly follow this man! Grow some balls!" The woman slapped her forehead. Her cheeks flashed while her hands trembled. "Let's go? Are you freaking kidding me, Isagani? You're not trying to change his mind. We came here to change the alpha king's mind."
They were already on their first-name basis. Were these two mates?
"I already talked to him. You know that, but he won't listen to me. There is nothing we can do about it." He touched the woman's arms, but she forcefully yanked them away as if she was burned.
"No way! I am not giving up! I'm not like you. I will save River whether you help me or not."
The delta held his hand in the air as a sign of surrender.
"Save her? How? Do you have the money to buy her?" I asked. I dropped the pen and rested both of my hands on my chin. Dawn opened and closed her mouth. "I know it. You may have been a luna a long time ago, but nothing is left. No pack. No people. No title. Everyone you know thought you were dead. If you cannot save her, don't ask me to do it for you. I have nothing to do with River anymore."
"You. Don't. Have. Balls," she declared, emphasizing each word.
A muscle ticked. "Excuse me? That's not how you will talk to your king."
"My king? Huh?" With hurried steps, she went to my desk and leaned on me. "My king is just. My king is brave. My king values his mate. She loves her. I don't see any of that to you, Your Majesty."
My blood boiled in anger.
I inhaled deeply, trying to contain my anger.
She was lucky she was a woman. If she were a man, I would rip her throat.
My gaze shifted to the delta.
"Why are you allowing this woman to say whatever she pleases?"
The delta could not look me in the eyes. "Nothing can stop her if she puts her mind to it, Your Majesty. My apologies."
Dawn glanced over her shoulder. "You don't have to apologize to him!" the woman scolded.
"Dawn. He is my king," the delta explained.
Her eyes went back to me. "If something happened to River, I will not forgive you, Your Majesty. You will regret it." The fire in her eyes told me she would make her threat.
"Are you done? If you are, you can go. You should be grateful I am controlling me not to hurt you."
"You can hurt me all you want. But I never back down from bastards like you. Damn you!" she hissed and stormed out of my office.
The delta looked at me apologetically. "Forgive her, Your Majesty. It's just River that meant so much to her. They were like sworn sisters. River bought her from Henderson."
"You don't have to explain. Do not mention the traitor's name anymore in my presence."
He smiled sadly. "You will regret not doing anything, Your Majesty."
I leaned on my chair. "Like how you regret not doing anything for your mate?"
"Lady Juliana is like the sky while I am the ground. But no. I suppose you might be wrong. I did not regret anything. I did anything for her, even doing unforgivable things for her sake. That's enough for me. No
regrets. I did my best. How about you, Your Majesty? Did you do everything for River?"
I punched the table.
The pain exploded. "Out!" I barked. "Leave me alone before I punish you for overstepping your boundaries."
Delta Isagani nodded, bowed, and left in a hurry.
I slumped on the chair.
Everyone thought I was the villain for putting River in the auction house when it was only her punishment for siding with the traitors. She brought it to herself.
'Denaro.'
Silence.
The bastard had not been answering me even after countless attempts to talk to him. He was mad after I asked the beta to bring her mate to the auction house.
'Fine. If you give me the cold shoulder, do that for the rest of your life.'
Another knock resounded. "Woman! I told you I no longer want to talk-"
"It is I, Your Majesty. The beta," he declared, cutting off my words.
"Come in." I sighed and massaged my neck. Who would visit me next, trying to change my mind? "What do you want? Let's get over it."
"I want to save River."
