"Come again?" I asked, not believing my ears. I stood, sauntered towards him, and was in front of the beta. "Repeat what you said," I ordered.
Beta Valentine gritted his teeth. "I will save the queen. I said."
I scoffed. "Queen? This kingdom has no queen."
"River Williams. She is the queen for me, Your Majesty. My wolf recognized her as my queen. Not Zenith. He is forcing me to save her and he won't stop until I give in." Why did everybody want to help the traitor? They were blinded by their emotions.
Fool.
"Why would you save her? Did I tell you, too? Tell me your reason so that I can understand it."
The beta looked me in the eyes. "Did she no longer hold any feelings for you, Your Majesty?"
"Out of your concern," I growled.
Wanting to escape from the beta's prying eyes, I sighed and went to the window, and stared below. The servants were hanging their washed clothes under the sun. "Your Majesty-"
"She is a traitor. She betrayed the kingdom."
"It was her sister, the previous queen, who did that. If she wanted to kill you, she had long done it, Your Majesty. Internalize what I had said because they were all true. Do not harden your heart before it is too late."
I folded my hands in front of my chest as I glanced down below.
The female servants were whispering to each while glancing at their surroundings.
"Too late for what? Valentine. You're acting as if you already have a mate."
I would not expect him to take a mate for himself. Duty before others. Duty before taking a woman. Those were the beta's beliefs. It was hard as steel. Unbinding.
"I'm not looking for a mate, Your Majesty. But I want you to have your own happiness."
"She broke my trust."
"How long will you continue being stubborn?"
"The traitor's fate has been sealed," I muttered.
The beta closed the distance between us, not accepting my explanation.
"Your Majesty! Soften your heart before you lose her, too. Regrets will only come in the end. For the last time, think of how you will regret losing someone." Something constricted in my chest while imagining it. But no. I won't regret everything that I do.
"I no longer cared if she would die or not. I forbid anyone of you from saving her. She will live if the Moon Goddess allows it. She will die if it is her destiny."
The beta was taken aback at my statement. "I know you are ruthless, but not to this extent. We protect our females. Not to drive them from harm. Why are you doing this, Your Majesty?"
My hands trembled. "Valentine! Breath another word, and I will punch you!" My voice roared along the room.
"No, I won't, Your Majesty. You have to awaken. Hatred will not help you. Pain will come if you continue being stubborn."
I faced him and swung my hand on his face.
Valentine's eyes widened, not expecting my punch. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Stop," I hissed. "I am no longer listening to someone's opinion."
The beta smiled sadly, which angered me even more. "Forgive me if I offended you, Your Majesty, but I will save the queen whether you want it or not." He bowed and stormed out of my office.
Fuck it!

One by one, the women were sold in front of my eyes. What was the most heartbreaking thing about seeing Chiyo and Dolly cry for each other until one guard forced them to separate?
It pained me to see them breaking apart knowing I could not do anything about it. It had only been what? Barely a day with them, but my heart was already with them.
I sucked in a breath, trying to act strong even if I was breaking apart. Why did I have to witness all the misfortunes happening to the people around me?
"It is your time," Dion announced.
I looked around and saw I was the only remaining person in the room. The once crowded waiting room was empty except for my presence.
I cleared my throat when I felt something blocking it. "W-where are they?"
"Sold."
Sold. I will be after this.
"Everyone of them?"
Dion hesitated but nodded in the end. "They were. Most of the buyers are vampires."
My hands went to cover my mouth.
'Everything was your fault, River. If only you agreed to my proposal, I could save the women. But no. You choose your hatred over them,' Sunflower sneered. She bared her fangs at me. 'Live knowing you are partly at fault for their demise.'
I covered my ears as Sunflower's words rang in my head.
'That's not true!'
'It is! I am powerful. I can kill the guards. Rip their throats. But you never consider my options. You chose their deaths. Now, carry the burden of knowing you are the reason why they became the vampire's blood banks.' 1
"Miss?"
My mind went back to reality and realized Dion was still expecting me.
"A-are you okay?"
I drew a couple of breaths.
Sunflower was wrong. It was not my fault why they were sold.. right?
"The vampires. Do you know some of them?"
"They said some were warriors from a long time ago. Some were descendants of the first vampire-the Vampire King. Aside from that, I cannot give you any more details, Miss." Dion extended his hand. "Come, Miss. Master Henderson is waiting for you. You're the last one."
I looked at his hand, and instead of giving my hand to him, I put it behind my shoulders.
Biting my upper lips, I asked, "Do you think they will be safe?"
"The women? Knowing the vampires, I cannot guarantee their safety, Miss. Except if they were their brides."
Brides were equivalent to mates among the werewolves.
"But that's only a slim chance."
"Yes, Miss. They will only be treated as blood banks. Are you scared?"
Was I scared for myself? No. But for them, yes.
"No," I answered truthfully. "It is them I am worried about."
"We cannot choose our destiny. Let's go."
I went after Dion, deep in thought. We were getting closer to the stage, yet my mind was not thinking of escaping-going with destiny.
Until we stopped when we bumped into two giant guards who looked like they would not hesitate to kill me if I made a wrong move.
In the background, a man's voice echoed.
"Stay still, Miss. Walk into that door, and you will see the stage."
"And now...for the last item. This woman is the most precious thing this evening. She is the mate of the current alpha king. The rightful queen of the kingdom of Vernice. To get to know more about her, let's welcome the last item."
it was time.
I thought Dion would push me onto the stage, but the curtain lifted, and I was face to face with the crowd-my potential buyers.
My heart raced wildly, and I felt my hands turn cold.
Moon Goddess, if you consider me your child, help me.
