"Do I?" the alpha asked. The corner of his lips lifted. "What do you think?"
My brows furrowed. "I am the one asking. Who are you, sir?" I inquired. Was he as heartless as Alpha Wade? And speaking of that bastard, I wondered what happened to Alpha Erik. Did he die? I no longer see the doctor and forgot to ask Dion about the alpha's whereabouts.
"Sir? Is that how you address your new master? Don't make me regret my decision to buy you. Or do you prefer that those blood-suckers buy you? I can ask Henderson to return you."
That was acceptable as long as the transaction did not exceed twenty-four hours.
However, I don't want to return to that greedy bastard who only thinks about business and profit.
"What do you want to do with me?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "Don't know. I will think about it."
My mouth fell open.
Was he serious? He just bought me without thinking about how I could benefit him. Impossible. An impulsive buyer showing his wealth by buying me? "What can you do?"
I smirked. This is an easy question. "Betraying. Lying. Angering someone. That's what I am good at. Didn't you hear the rumors about me?"
I would be offended if no rumors circulated about what happened during the Proclamation Ceremony. Of how it became a tragedy.
"Rumors? What kind of hearsays were they?"
My eyes narrowed. What was wrong with this alpha? Why did he continue asking me? Pretending he had no clue what was happening in the palace?
He put his fingers on his chin as if in deep thought. Even his facial hair was all white.
I glanced around.
The crowd slowly parted one by one and the next thing I knew, t was only the two of us. I was standing in front of him while he continued watching me with his dark eyes. "Did I hear them? Did the news reach the neighboring pack on what your sister did to the other alphas who were against the revolt?"
"Who are you, really?"
A creepy smile gave way on his lips. "Am I right? Or not?"
I stepped back as my blood went cold.
The former's queen's mistake had already spread far and wide. If they knew: was I who was her sister, they would also brand me as a traitor. Or they would kill me. Did it matter?
Nothing mattered anymore. Nothing. It was not that you were afraid of dying.
"I don't know what you are talking about," I lied because that was what I was good at, anyway-lying.
Alpha Raphael stood. "I am expecting you to say that. A liar will not tell the truth that she is lying."
Gritting my teeth, I asked, "Are you pertaining to me, Alpha?"
Did this man have the ability to read my mind? I was starting to get afraid that maybe he knew even the thoughts in the corner of the darkest part of my heart. "Master Raphael," he corrected. "You will call me that. I wanted my slaves to call me that. Hurry. We will go back to the pack and you will mate my people."
"Why do I have to meet them when my task is to serve you?"
"Serve me?" he explored and snickered, leaving me alone. He stopped and glanced over his shoulder. "I am not the only one whom you will serve. Follow me. We will be returning to the Riverside Pack." As I followed after him, from the corner of my eye, I saw Dolly being dragged by her vampire master, pleading. The vampire was deaf to her plea.
Our eyes met, and like a coward, I looked away.
I heard Dolly call my name, or was it only my guilt?
I shook my head while balling my fist. I no longer had any control over what had happened. This was never my fault, to begin with, and I never told them I would help them.
However... It felt like my heart was being torn away when all I could do was watch the two of them.
'How could you continue watching the women and do nothing, River? You disgust me,' Sunflower spat in my mind. 'Do you like seeing the fears in the women's eyes? I could help them if you ask me to. I can save them. We can save them. I was only waiting for your decision.' 3
'Then beg at Maxxwell's? Asked for his forgiveness because I rejected him? Swallow my pride because he is my mate? Not in a million chances. I will forever stick to my decision and will have no regrets. It is only you who cannot move on from what happened.'
'May your pride can kill the guilt eating your system. You deserve that, River. You deserve that. I regretted reaching out to you. I am willing to give you one last chance, but you only wasted it.' 'Shut up.'
Sunflower rolled her eyes at me.
"Hurry up!"
I jumped at the alpha's sudden voice in the background. I only realized that I halted, and the distance between him and us was already too far.
"My apologies, Alpha Raphael."
"Alpha Raphael? Again? Are you dumb? A fool? Among the royalties, you are the dumbest of all."
I bit my lower lip and stopped myself from replying.
The alpha will only talk worse when he learns I was illiterate at first-not knowing how to read and write.
"I will try to remember it," I answered, gritting my teeth.
"You failed to do my first order. You will do it again and again."
"Master Raphael," I corrected. "I will do better next time, Master Raphael." I forced a smile. "Anything else, Master, which I should know?" I asked, smiling even if that was the last I wanted to do right now.
He did not answer and exited the auction house..
Arrogant bastard.
We rode a carriage back to the alpha's pack. With the amount of wealth he had, I thought he had dozens of warriors with him, guarding him, but it turned out he was alone. Foolishness on my part, if I will be asked. Alpha Raphael may have thought he could defend himself from his enemies, but if they overpowered him, that was the only time he would regret it.
Observing him, it seemed like he could protect himself. His movements were fast and fluid with all the muscles under his tunic.
"Do you want me to be your personal guard? To defend you against your enemies, Master Raphael?" I could not help but ask out of the blue. He was silent, and annoyingly, the journey reminded me of when I went with the alpha king to the palace. He was also quiet, not caring to talk to me. It was only I who broke the silence.
When I could no longer stay silent, I bombarded the alpha with a lot of questions, which of course, were answered by another set of questions.
The silence was never good for me. Remaining silent in the corner made me think of the tragedy that befell me, and I was reminded of Zenith, which I did not want to do.
The seaside was not even helping at all.
I need to talk.
"Why? Can you kill someone for me?"
"I don't know how to fight," I retorted. A hint of truth in my words. It was Sunflower who knew how to defend herself. Not me.
"Why do you ask, then?"
I gave him a half-shrug. "Curious."
"Haven't you heard the saying, curiosity will kill the cat? You ask questions. A lot. The last time a slave asked me a lot, she was dead the next day."
A threat. For me, but if he thought that would scare me away, no. And the alpha did not know about that.
I crossed my arms in front of my chest and leaned on my back.
"I heard worse than that. So no. You won't hurt my feelings. You can try your luck next time."
"That's not my goal."
"Are you mated?" I checked his neck. No bite marks. "Unmated. Why did you go to the auction house? Why did you buy me? Are you a regular there? Why did you take an interest in me, huh?"
A muscle ticked.
"Another question, and I will cut your tongue."
I stuck my tongue at him. "You can do that. I don't care. A lost caring when I have no one on my side." Tracing the outline of the delicate design of a flower on the wall of the carriage, I added, "Being alive or dead doesn't make any more difference."
The alpha scoffed and put the stray white hairs on the corner of his ears.
I could not help but be mesmerized by the beauty of his fingertips on his long hair.
"How about the child you are carrying?"
Child? What child?
I looked beside me. There was no child.
"Do you perhaps see a ghost?"
