                    He Is Coming
My heart hammered against my chest as I scanned the surroundings looking for the alpha king's presence. But all I saw were the women and the pack members talking to each other. Some were eating already, and some were going in whatever direction they wanted.
Safe. No alpha king in sight.
Realizing Alpha Raphael may be pulling another prank on me, and I inquired, "Where is he? If you really are telling the truth, where is he? I could not find him."
I will know.
Alpha Raphael chuckled in the end. I was right.
Could I punch him?
Kidding. You worry too much, woman. If the alpha king is here, you will sense his presence. You will sense his smell. You will be the one to know."
Right.
How could I forget that?
"Don't pull any more pranks on me, Master Raphael. It's not funny," I scolded him and stepped away from him and went to the visitors and assisted their needs.
After a couple of hours, it was already nighttime.
My arms already felt as if I could no longer move them. For a moment, I went back to my room for a retouch and went back again to the hall. This was the most important part of the event-the Mating Ceremony. It would always be during the night when the moon would be at its highest peak.
I relaxed for a moment when I did not see any shadows of the alpha king from morning up to now. Maybe he was busy and won't come. That would be for the best.
Alpha Raphael was nowhere in sight. I had been looking for him among the crowd but to no avail. He was busy with the women. Ugh. Saw him once with a brunette while his hands were wrapped around the woman's waist while flirting with each other. I doubted if that woman was his mate.
Whatever.
All I had to do was endure this whole evening and serve the visitors, and I was done.
I was instructing the servants to fill the empty bowls and drinks when the hair on my neck stood.
Frozen for a moment, I titled my head and looked for the source of it.
"Miss River?" I heard the servant call my name, but my attention was at the door's entrance.
I held my hand, stopping him from seeing anything, and craned my neck.
What was happening to me?
I sniffed the air. No scent is coming off from that particular person.
He is not here, River. Calm down, I told myself.
Breathing deeply, I turned my attention again to the servant. "Yes? What is it?"
"We had done everything you instructed, Miss River."
"Good. Good. Prepare for standby. And if everything is good, you can enjoy it for a moment, and please be back."
He grinned at me, bowed, and walked away.
Every time the servants bow to me, they remind me of my life at the palace.
Calming my nerves, I stepped away from the table and looked for somewhere else.
I was not looking where I was going when I bumped into someone.
"Oh, my apologies. Forgive me-"
"River?"
I looked up and saw Lady Juliana. She was gorgeous in her blue-green dress, which showed her body. "Y-Your Grace."
Double shit.
Why did it have to be this woman?
I offered her a weak smile. "A pleasant evening, Your Grace."
"You are here?"
"The same as you, Your Grace."
Secretly, I looked at her side. No chaperone. No servant. Was she alone?
"Why?"
"What do you mean why?"
"Why are you here? After what happened at the palace after the proclamation-"
I pointed at the empty table in the corner. "I know we are not friends. You hated me before. There is no way you will treat me as your friend, but I want to ask something, Your Grace. Do you want to grace me with your presence?"
Rolling her eyes, she answered, "Your presence: okay compared to the people around here," she answered, clearly showing her disgust. "Led the way, Dog Servant."
My steps faltered as irritation towards Lady Juliana pushed through.
I remember all our interactions were not that good. Glancing over my shoulder, I said, "Now, now. You don't have to be a bitch, Your Grace." Her eyes widened. "What? You want me to stay still while you disrespected me? If you want me to respect you, stop calling me Dog Servant." That chapter of my life was already closed.
"I will call whatever I want."
"Likewise, Your Grace."
If she wanted war, I would give it myself.
We settled on a vacant table. I grabbed one chair and sat, but Lady Juliana was standing.
I scowled. "Is there something wrong, Your Grace?"
"Give me a seat to sit on."
Shaking my head, I stood and grabbed one for her, waited for her to sit, and returned to my chair. She was still a bitch after what happened.
Lady Juliana folded her arms in front of her chest.
"Let's get back to the question earlier. Shall we? Why are you here? Riverside Pack of all?"
The corner of my mouth lifted. "Why, Your Grace? Do you want to replace me here? Are you willing to become a slave to serve the pack?"
She smiled, satisfied. "You are back to being a Dog Servant."
I shrugged my shoulders. "Call me what you want. What happened to the palace after I was gone?" Did this woman know what happened to Alpha Erik?
"The alpha king ordered everyone never to tell the others what happened that time. In short, all the people who were not there did not know what happened." Probably that was also the reason why the others treated me usually, without any hatred. They did not know.
"He is again covering the past with his authority."
"I thought I would be gone. I had no idea my bastard fiancé would betray the alpha king. They plotted treason behind my back."
"Alpha Wade knows you are head-over-heels in love with the alpha king, and if you ever find out their plans, you will tell Maxxwell. They did not want to risk it all."
Lady Juliana balled her fist on top of the table. "If I have known, I will kill them myself. How dare they jeopardize the alpha king's safety." "How about Alpha Erik?"
Her eyes narrowed at me. "Why are you asking about him? Are you still in love with the bastard?"
"I saw him."
She bared her fangs. "Where is he? I will kill him myself. He escapes after. His father and the rest of the traitors were killed. Served them right."
My stomach clenched when I remembered my sister's lifeless body.
"Stop it."
"You sympathized with the traitors but not the alpha king? Your mate? Shame on you!" she spat.
"Maxxwell is no longer my mate," I whispered harshly. "I rejected him."
Lady Juliana suddenly slapped the table. The utensils danced, and the wine glass broke. "You what? You rejected the alpha king? How dare a mere slave and servant reject him? You have nothing in life. Your life is insignificant. You are a speck of dirt in the ground."
I stared at her boredly. "Are you done attacking me? Will you please sit, Your Grace? They are looking at us and thinking we are fighting."
"We are fighting."
"Over some man? No. You can have Maxxwell himself. I am the only one torn in your way. Alpha Erik is also gone. You can pursue the alpha king as long as you want."
"I don't need some advice from a slave." She got up and left me. But stopped when she remembered something. "One more thing. You better stay away from the alpha king. He will be coming here."
