Murdered
My Queen.
Dang.
My stupid heart wouldn't stop pounding faster because of that fucking two words. It clenched as the alpha king gave me that soulful expression. As much as I hated to admit it, I was still affected by his presence. However, I was reminded of the fact that he was not even sorry for what happened to Zenith and that made me furious above all. 1
I spat on the floor and exclaimed, "Fuck you!"
Then, I forcefully shoved him and stormed away. I heard him taking his steps to go after me. I looked back and added, "Don't you ever dare come after me. Or you will never even see my shadows. I loathed you that much!"
With my heart banging against my chest, I used the back of my palm to wipe the tears away from my eyes as I stormed away.
The surroundings were blurry. My eyes would never stop crying.
But I just walked to whatever my feet would lead me.
I only halted when I realized I was already outside the pack and the smell of the sweet scent of flowers hit me hard. It should calm my racing heart and even my nerves, but it did not. The same pain attacked me again as the alpha king's face flashed into my mind.
"Damn you, Maxxwell!" I harshly whispered. My shoulders shook, but I stopped myself from breaking a sob.
After seeing the alpha king, how could I pretend as if nothing had happened? He totally ruined everything. My peace. My life. Just everything.
My chest felt like something ran over it. It was heavy and in pain. Breathing was becoming difficult. I hated it.
I balled my fist.
Why did I have to see him again? Why? I already suffered enough. Why was the Moon Goddess so cruel in even showing me a little happiness?
Despite numerous attempts to control my tears, I failed. They would never stop.
I sniffed, my nose becoming cloggy.
"River?"
Recognizing that voice, I stopped crying and sought the direction of the voice.
"River. It's you."
"Sir Elijah?"
He walked out of the shadows as his gaze bore into mine. The first thing I noticed was the smudges of lipstick on his neck. I guessed old habits did not die easily.
"River. It is really you." His eyes darted at my bare neck. "You haven't worn the jewelry I had given you."
I bit back my lips while straightening to make myself presentable.
"About that... "I bought Dawn with your jewelry. "I keep it, Sir Elijah. I don't want to lose it," I lied.
"No, no, no. You can do anything about it. It's just that...we haven't seen each other and the jewelry was the first thing I remembered."
"You still look the same." Having a prince aura, I wanted to add but stopped myself. "I...I haven't seen you for a while. Where have you been?"
He dropped the cigarette he had been smoking which made me raise my brows. "You smoke?"
He smiled as if he was caught doing some mischievous things. "I went to the human world and saw it. Tried. And liked it."
"The human world? With the alpha king's permission? Why?"
"Do you remember the woman tattooed on my back?"
"Yes. I do remember."
"I found her. She is real."
"Let me add. She is your mate? And you search for her?"
Wow.
What a lucky woman.
Elijah looked at the sky. "She is married and has one child. But she is my mate. Alright. A fucking human."
My heart fell for him. A union between a human and a werewolf was rare and considered taboo. The former did not know of our identity and if she knew who the real Elijah was, she would run as far away from
him.
Poor Sir Elijah.
"D-do you want a h-hug?"
"How kind of you." "Do you want to?" I was on the verge of embracing him when he confessed, "I don't. Let's forget about what I said. So...how are you? Why did you cry? Why choose this pack of all? The alpha king knows some of
the secrets of this pack."
I sauntered towards the staircase and sat.
"You did not have any idea about what happened to me? Right. You went to the human world. Zenith was my sister. She betrayed the alpha king even if I told her not to. Tried to tell the alpha king about it, but he
did not believe me. Told me I was also a traitor. I rejected him. Then, he asked the beta to sell me. End of the story. How about you? Why are you here, Sir Elijah?"
I tried to be casual about it, but the words were blanketed with bitterness.
Sir Elijah's mouth fell open. "River. I did not know."
"Of course, you did not know. And you bring the alpha king here."
Maxxwell might have brought this man instead of the delta and the beta.
"The night is getting colder. We have to go inside."
I felt the cold slipping into my pores.
"And face the alpha king again? No. Thank you very much. I would rather stay here, Sir Elijah."
"Remove the sir. Elijah is fine." He offered his hand. "Shall we?"
I let out an exasperated sigh. "I won't."
"Do you know how dangerous this pack is?" he repeated again.
I rolled my eyes at him.
"Oh, come on. No offense, but the most dangerous here is the alpha king. You can go back to your king, by the way."
"Too bad. I do not want a no for an answer." Elijah tugged my hand and forced me to stand. "Humor this brokenhearted man, River. Just like in the old times. Or you can give me a massage."
"Then another rumor would spread that something is going on between the two of us. I don't like it. Thank you for your kind offer, Sir Elijah."
"Hey. Where is the feisty woman who never tramps her?"
I stared back at him. "I am also asking the same." I no longer understand myself.
The smile wiped from his mouth. "I guess all of us changed. Let's go, shall we?"
"Sir Elijah..."
"You hate the alpha king? Fine by me. But the conflict is only between the two of you. I am out of that."
His hands felt warm against mine.
"Fine. But please don't leave me. You're the only one I trust."
"Of course, I won't. As long as you will humor me."
Hand in hand, we went back inside.
The women, who did not find their mates in this Mating Ceremony stared jealously at me. For the first time, I stood proudly in front of them-lifting my chin.
"Look at the males," Sir Elijah whispered in my ears. "They are ogling at you. I'm afraid they will borrow another pair of eyes if the alpha king sees them. He will get possessive."
I stopped myself before a smile made its way to my lips.
"Stop feeding my ego. I don't care what he does as long as he steps out of my sight."
"Woman. I've been looking for you!"
Sir Elijah and my head went to the source and saw Alpha Raphael coming towards us. On his right arm was the woman I saw earlier whom he was kissing in the hallway.
He stopped in his tracks upon realizing that I was with another man.
"Is he your mate?" Alpha Raphael asked.
The other alpha did not know the Council members. It was ordinary for him to not use any honorifics.
Sir Elijah suddenly threw me at his back. "Hide," he hissed.
"Chill, Sir Elijah," I murmured against his back. "He is my master now."
Elijah's muscles were tense as if he was preparing for a fight. "The only master you serve is the alpha king," he growled. "It's not you."
I smiled bitterly, patted his back, and came out from the safety of his back.
"It's okay, Sir Elijah. My apologies for my friend's behavior, Master Raphael?"
"Master? River."
"He bought me. The law states that whoever bought me will own me and that's Master Raphael."
Sir Elijah bared his fangs at the alpha. "In the name of the alpha king, I order you to release her and you will follow me."
Real tension flew between the two of them.
I cleared my throat to get their attention, but they were still in their staring contest.
The woman who was with the alpha slowly slipped away and the latter did not even mind it.
Clearing his ears, unbothered at the threat, Alpha Raphael declared, "Why would you follow you? I will only release the woman if the alpha king will get her from me."
Sir Elijah was in the middle of opening his mouth when Gavin was suddenly on the alpha's side. The beta whispered something in his alpha's ears.
The alpha became serious and it seemed all the colors of his face drained.
"Master Raphael? Tell me what happened."
He looked at me. His hands trembled. "Someone was murdered," he mouthed.
