                    Return
In an instant, Sir Elijah suddenly grabbed me and protected me from unknown enemies. He looked back and forth, his muscles tensed.
"Hide, River," he growled.
"Sir Elijah, I can do this." Even if he did not have to do that. Though I appreciate his efforts.
His hold on me tightened. I felt his claws elongating and some of the guests looked in our direction, with a confused expressions.
I gave them a reassuring smile and it was enough to return their gazes to what they were doing.
"Everyone must not show any hint of panic or the visitors of the Ceremony would sense something is wrong," the beta reminded.
Sir Elijah glared at Alpha Raphael which the latter did not mind. A bit.
"What a failure!" Sir Elijah whispered harshly. "You do not compromise the queen's safety. Fix this. Tighten your security. Find the culprit. If another death will be added, I will make sure to punish you and all your officials," Sir Elijah hissed.
"And who are you to do that? Huh?"
Beta Gavin tapped his alpha's shoulders. "I think that is one of the members of the Council. He is Sir Elijah. The women are fond of calling him 'The Prince'. Show your respect, Alpha Raphael."
The alpha raised his brows. "You're the puppet of the alpha king."
"Come. Again?"
"The puppet of the alpha king," he repeated.
I did not know if the alpha was a fool or not saying those words.
Sir Elijah growled. Just as he will attack the alpha, I pulled him away. And positioned in the middle of them. Looking back and forth at the two, I declared, "Hey! We are here to settle something. We don't fight among ourselves."
"Fix your attitude, bastard."
Alpha Raphael scowled.
"The woman is right, Alpha Raphael. Now is not the time to fight. We must move fast. We don't want the guest to know a killer is running free."
"Join me," Alpha Raphael urged his beta.
"I'll go with you. Let's go," I invited them. But before I could step my foot forward, Sir Elijah yanked me.
"What are you doing, River?" he whispered.
I saw the alpha and beta leave the hall.
I wanted to call their names but thought otherwise. It will call the visitors' attention. Our priority was to protect them and find the killer.
"Let me go, Sir Elijah. I have to be with them. Someone is killing our pack members."
"Our pack? River. You belong to us. You belong in the palace. Do not meddle with them. Let the alpha and the beta fix the mess. You stay here until the alpha king will be back. He is still busy with something." "Sir Elijah. I appreciate your concern, but I am no longer your responsibility. Not anymore," I replied and hurriedly went after Alpha Raphael.
"River! Come back!"
I did not.
Using my sense of smell, I traced Alpha Raphael's and the beta's scent led me to the crime scene- in the garden. Only a few guards and the alpha and beta were present at the scene. "Master Raphael," I called.
My heart was pounding fast.
The scent of flowers was not enough to mask the scent of the metallic smell of blood.
Feeling dizzy, I shook off the feeling. Must not faint. Still haven't gotten used to the smell of blood.
Their attention shifted to me.
"Woman. You should not have come here. The alpha king will kill us if something happens to you," Alpha Raphael reprimanded. "Beta Gavin. Bring her back inside." The beta stepped forward but I shook my head.
"You meet him?"
"We talked. Asked me to protect you."
"I can protect myself."
I sauntered towards the dead body and saw his ripped throat and a big slash on his chest. "What happened to him?"
"Woman. This is not the right time to pry."
Shaking my head, I stubbornly said, "I belong to this pack now. You can tell me anything. I want to help."
"A guard first notice-"
"Alpha Raphael," the beta reminded. "Do not involve her. The alpha king made sure to—"
"Let's forget about the alpha king and focus on the present, shall we? Now. Tell me."
The beta shook his head and heaved a sigh. "Don't tell me I did not warn you."
"The alpha king will not touch you. I promise."
"Every month, someone is found dead here in the pack," Alpha Raphael announced. He barked orders to the guards to give a proper burial to the victim and they carried them away. This was already a problem, yet Alpha Raphael still planned to step down?
"The reasons?"
He shrugged his broad shoulders. "Probably because of hate. Riverside Pack are gorgeous-"
"This is a serious issue, Alpha Raphael," the beta chastised.
"Gavin. Stop being a worry-wart. We can fix this."
"How can you fix this if you are planning to step down?" I asked.
I bit my lips when I realized what I just said.
With a curious gaze, the beta asked me, "Step down? What did she mean, Alpha Raphael?"
Alpha Raphael gave me a look.
Damn it. That was supposed to be a secret between us.
"Nothing, Gavin. The victim is more important. Be sure to investigate everything. I want you to catch the culprit as early as possible."
"Are you really planning on stepping down?" the beta asked. His eyes told me he felt as if the alpha had betrayed him.
"It's...part of my plans."
"If your Father will know about that, he will be heartbroken. He wanted you to remain in your position. You're the only one capable of doing this job. You cannot leave us."
"Gavin. You can lead the pack better than I do. You are more dependable. Father trusted you more than I. If I leave, the pack will flourish even more."
Disappointment crossed the beta's face. "You are running away again from your responsibilities. Is that the only thing you can do? Run away?"
"I am not running away. I am following what I want to do. I want to do what I want without thinking of my responsibility."
"Selfish bastard," Gavin hissed and turned away, leaving the two of us. "You disappointed us."
A couple of minutes later, Alpha Raphael faced me. "Look at what you did, woman."
"Not my fault. You decided to leave them and the beta's reaction is understandable. Think about it over and over again. If the killings continue, the pack's safety will be jeopardized. With no one to lead, this pack will crumble."
"You are already excluded. The alpha king and I already talked. And he is taking you away from this pack. You will be back to the palace where you are supposed to be, woman."
My mouth fell open as it trembled in disbelief. "We talked about this. I made myself clear that I won't be returning to the palace!"
I bit the inside of my cheeks. No freaking way. My breath quickened.
"Woman. You listen."
"No! You listen to me, Master Raphael." With bloodshot eyes, I closed the distance between us and whispered harshly. "The alpha king killed my sister. If I go back to the palace, I will go mad. The memories of that night will continue to attack."
I shivered as I imagined my tragic fate.
"Woman. I cannot guarantee your safety here."
"I want to stay here."
"We can no longer do that. The killer has returned."
"I can fight."
"You can but not with a child you are carrying. Your safety is the topmost responsibility."
My eyes darted back to the dead body.
"You're a coward, Master Raphael. And irresponsible on top of that. No one can force me to return to the palace. Not even the alpha king."
