"Your Highness! You are killing Master Raphael!" I exclaimed and rushed over to the alpha's side. It looked like Maxxwell had the desire to almost kill him, if not because of me, meddling with the two.
The beta stiffened and all he could do was watch as Maxxwell beat Alpha Raphael. One single move against Maxxwell meant waging war against the kingdom. Gritting his teeth, he continued standing there, observing what would happen next.
The corner of Alpha Raphael's mouth exploded. He squinted at the feeling of pain and gazed at the alpha king full of questions.
Maxxwell's breathing was fast while his fist trembled.
Just as he was on the verge of punching Alpha Raphael again, I protected him using my body and positioned myself in front of him, extending my hands.
"Move!" the alpha king growled.
"Your Highness. What did my master do wrong?" I inquired, helping him get on his feet.
Maxxwell bared his fangs at the sight of me helping the alpha. His jealousy showed in his eyes. His body shook. Gold flashed in his eyes, his wolf trying to get control.
I was certain Denaro would never hurt me, but Alpha Raphael was another story.
"Stay away from that bastard, River," he hissed.
I did not. Biting down my fear, I lifted my chin and met the alpha king in his eyes.
"It is only right for the servant to help her new master, Your Highness," I said calmly, even if the last thing I wanted right now was not to talk to him. My hand trembled to avenge what happened to Alpha Raphael for being punched in front of the beta. An embarrassment on Alpha Raphael's side. Too good that the other warriors were not present around, not adding to the embarrassment of Alpha Raphael.
The alpha king glared at my hands on the alpha's shoulders.
"Your hands. Off from his shoulders."
Alpha Raphael personally removed my hands from his arms and inched a little further away from me. That was the only time Beta Gavin went to his side and checked his face. It was bloody, but he will heal. "What's the hell wrong with you?" I inquired. "Beating Master Raphael without giving him the chance to fight for himself? Very good, Your Highness. You deserve a standing ovation."
The alpha king's eyes burned with anger and envy. "You do not know what's wrong with me? How could you not know that I do not like it when you are extra close to that alpha? My beast does not like it, River." I scoffed. "That's the reason why you are acting like a dick? That's shallow. Perhaps you have already forgotten that our ties were already severed. We no longer have connections to each other, Your Highness. You no longer have the right to get furious about me getting closer to whoever men I like," I answered back. 1
Pain crossed the alpha king's eyes, but he no longer said anything.
Satisfied at his silence, I moved over to Alpha Raphael, checked the wound on the corner of his lips, and glared at the alpha king. How dare he!
"The servants will talk. Their sympathy will always be for Master Raphael. They will gossip saying you are nothing but the biggest bully."
I looked heavenward.
We already had a lot of problems on our hands. We cannot add another more.
Maxxwell's eyes only narrowed.
The beta's forehead puckered.
"Your Highness. Alpha Raphael committed a mistake, but on his behalf of him, I offer my apologies. Please accept it."
"Beta!" I exclaimed. "You should be siding with the alpha! If someone committed a mistake, it was the alpha king."
The alpha king roared.
My posture was rigid.
"You're blinded by your loyalty to that bastard, River. Did you not know his sin? His mistake against his people?"
I stomped my foot and declared, "Master Raphael did not do anything wrong, Your Highness."
"River! That asshole? He betrayed his people! He failed to protect them. He failed to protect these two," the alpha king declared, plainly showing his disgust as he referred to the dead bodies on the ground. " What did he do you ask. He was drunk on the women's warmth. He preferred to be with the women instead of solving the killings. The worst of all? He jeopardizes your safety. If something happened to you, I would punish everyone in this pack. No one will be spared."
My heart hitched at the alpha king's announcement.
I never wanted anyone to kill people for my sake. That was so wrong, but then again...the extent of what he could do... was mind-blowing.
I snapped back to reality.
There was no way my heart would react like that. I was no longer a teenager who would fall on someone else's lies. Yes. Everything he said was lies to get me back.
"Punishment is no longer necessary. Alpha Raphael will solve this in one week. Right, Master Raphael?"
The alpha grunted in reply.
The alpha king pocketed his hands. "Spoken like you are so sure about it. Even your cowardly master is hiding in the warmth of your skirt. Has he lost his tongue after fucking those women? He reeked of their repugnant scent. The sight of him makes me puke," he spat. "You disgusting piece of trash. You are not worthy to be an alpha. Even a rogue is more deserving of that position compared to you." 1
Ouch.
I titled my head and glanced at the silent alpha. "Remaining silent will not do you any good, okay? Speak."
Alpha Raphael heaved a sigh and uttered, "It was my fault, Your Highness. No excuse will be uttered to fix the mistake. If punishment will atone me for the mistakes I committed, punish me, Your Highness."
My mouth gaped open. "That's not what you should be saying."
Alpha Raphael smiled sadly. "Woman. The alpha king was right. I will make sure to get to the bottom of this, Your Highness. I admitted my mistake. If I did not prefer the women's company and was not thirsty for the softness of their bodies, this would never happen. n."
"Alpha Raphael, I followed your instructions to tighten the security," the beta offered. "Perhaps, the enemy is faster than we anticipated."
"I did not tell you that, Gavin." The alpha king glared at the beta who was caught lying to help his alpha. "Please do not be angry with him, Your Highness. He is just worried about me."
The alpha king folded his arms in front of his chest.
I secretly sighed in relief. Maxxwell seemed to gain control. "He should be. I have already decided what I would do with you if you ever fail to protect your pack. The things I would do to you, Alpha Raphael." He showed his palms to the
three of us and acted as if he was crushing someone. "I will make sure you regret your irresponsible decisions."
Alpha Raphael hung his head low. "I understand, Your Highness."
"Go. Bury the bodies after investigations. If you ever have another death this week, consider yourself done, Alpha Raphael."
The beta watched his alpha with his brows raised.
I scowled at the alpha king. Was he this cruel before? 1
"I understand, Your Highness. Please excuse us to catch the culprit."
"I am expecting that it is what you will do and not chasing skirts. Stop disappointing me and become the man that your pack has chosen. You are such a disappointment."
Alpha Raphael gave me a half-smile, silently saying that he was okay.
Okay?
He was far from it. Alpha Raphael even had not returned Maxxwell's fist.
"I will not do that, Your Highness. Rest assured." He bowed at us. "Please excuse me."
"Go. Before I change my mind on punishing you."
The beta dropped a curtsy, following his alpha. "I will be helping my alpha, Your Highness."
"Not before you call your warriors to bury them. After the investigation"
"They are already on the way, Your Highness," the beta replied while his eyes were glued to the alpha who was already walking away from us. He bowed again and hurriedly went after him.
Just as I turned my heel and went after them, the alpha king caught my arms and inquired, "And where do you think you are going, River?"
I glanced at his hands, tightening my arms when he sensed I had planned on running away. "Where else? After my master. On his side is where I should belong."
"Not anymore. If I am here, I am your master."
"Fuck you!" I snapped.
"Fuck me, instead," he answered while wearing a smirk on his face.
"Do you hear what you are saying? You make me sick."
"I know how to take care of the sick. I will take care of you."
"You are out of your mind."
"Only for you."
I yanked my hands away from him. "You're delusional. Let. Me. Go!" I said, emphasizing each word.
The alpha king snorted. "As if I will let you go. If the threat on this pack is not yet removed, you will be coming with me, River. I will guard you to keep you safe at all times and will lay down my life for you. I vow
it."
I laughed, then my expression turned sour. "Bullshit."
"River."
"River my ass. Release me. You're hurting me, Maxxwell."
His hold loosened. "I am not trying to hurt you, okay?"
"Physical wound will heal. But the emotional damage you cause will never heal. I hate you, Maxxwell. I hate you!"
The alpha king released me. Using that opportunity, I stormed away from him and realized my tears were flowing.
Great.
