Decisions
"Looks like a true gentleman," I blurted. "But in reality, you are nothing but an asshole, Your Highness," I spat.
The alpha king, perhaps he was already tired of arguing with me, smiled slowly and offered his hand. "Why don't you just take my hand, River? You always have something to say in your mouth, don't you?" "No, thank you. But I can walk on my own." I slapped his hand away, but he stepped aside to give way.
"Careful with your steps. This place is slippery. Careful. You will bump your head."
Rolling my eyes, I mumbled, "I'm fine. Will you stop treating me like a child, Maxxwell? I don't like it a bit."
"I don't want you to get hurt."
"Oh, please. You did hurt me already when you killed my sister." 1
It was too late to realize what I just said. Under my eyelashes, the alpha king's eyes went flat.
"I know," he said under his breath.
I gathered my hand together while the alpha king silently assisted me and was ready to catch me.
Temporarily forgetting my irritation, I looked around and my brows furrowed at the surroundings. The place looked empty and abandoned. I was expecting a safe house with women dancing and singing or doing whatever they wanted. Not like this.
"Is this the place? Why does it seem so... I don't know."
Maxxwell sniffed the air. "I don't smell any life but instead death."
I sucked in a breath. "Y-you think so?"
Something was telling me that something had happened to this place.
The wind flew paper trash into the meadow.
I heard footsteps and when I whipped my head, it was Alpha Raphael.
"This is not the situation I am expecting," Alpha Raphael muttered. "The women usually greet us when they hear our carriage. I tried to use a mind link to contact them, but no one will answer." The alpha's eyes were growing frantic.
As much as an evil thought was running through my mind, I chose to say it. Though I did not believe Alpha Raphael was the panic type.
My brows furrowed, then sniffed the air. The scent of flowers. Not even blood. However, there was something dark that lingered in the air. Death?
"Where do you think they are, Master Raphael?"
"There's only one way to find out."
Alpha Raphael went inside, and we followed after.
We entered the pack house.
The safe house had a temple and packhouse enough to house more than twenty women though I did not have any idea of the specific numbers. The kitchen had some leftover food which I think was cooked yesterday.
"What is that?" I asked, pointing at the figure on the floor.
"Fuck!" Alpha Raphael cried, and he ran upon seeing a woman lying on the cold floor. The stench of blood was getting stronger inside.
Alpha Raphael cursed and rushed to the woman's side, leaving us.
As we approached, I realized the woman was no longer breathing while Alpha Raphael scooped her in his arms. There was a big cut on her throat and her body was also turning purple.
I covered my mouth, feeling my strength had left me.
Maxxwell edged closer to me, and let me lean on him.
Oh, goddess.
Maxxwell scanned the surroundings looking for potential enemies while protecting me.
"Fiona!" Alpha Raphael called the woman, shaking the woman.
The woman was already dead when we arrived. Alpha Raphael was in denial.
"There is no use in calling the dead. Look for any survivors. River stay here," Maxxwell announced.
My eyes bulged. What a cruel thing to say. Alpha Raphael was grieving his loss. Why could he not sympathize?
"Don't say any more words that would hurt him," I uttered, showing my annoyance.
Maxxwell stared at me in disbelief. "Do you think crying will bring the dead back?"
I elbowed his stomach which made me groan. Served him right.
"Stay quiet if you do not have anything good to say."
"We cannot do anything for the dead. But we can do something for a living!" he whispered, harshly.
"What do you want me to say?" I mouthed. "Right now, Master Raphael will never listen anymore."
Maxxwell's eyes squeezed into a fist. Grabbing my hands, he said, "Let's go. Move, Raphael!" he barked. The alpha did not. Then, his shoulders shook.
When I watched him more closely, I realized his eyes simmered with tears.
A gasp escaped my lips. Alpha Raphael believed showing your tears in front of someone was a sign of weakness.
My heart clenched. Looking up, I shook my head.
"She's my friend," Alpha Raphael muttered, his voice cracking.
Maxxwell and I, temporarily forgetting our disagreement, looked at each other.
"Master Raphael, I am really sorry for your loss."
"Father will be devastated."
"What happened here was no longer your fault anymore."
I did not know Maxxwell could say some encouraging words to him.
Adding some words to the alpha king's statement, I coaxed, "I know you are hurting. As much as I hate to admit it, but...we have to look for anyone who may be waiting for our help." Gently, I put my hands on his shoulders and said, "Master Raphael. Every second counts."
Alpha Raphael inhaled deeply and wiped the corner of his eyes.
Reluctantly, Alpha Raphael left the woman's side and safely put her on the ground. The sight of Alpha Raphael crying was not appealing nor did it made me smile. It pained me to see him like this. Behind that carefree attitude was someone who cared for his pack. A lot. More than I could ever imagine.
"A-are you okay, Master Raphael?"
"He should be, River. Now. Enough of the drama. Let's move!" Maxxwell roared.
Alpha Raphael stood and shifted into his enormous white wolf without saying anything.
I stepped away from the unsightly view of the dead woman.
I thought I would be sick any moment from now.
"Stop fawning over him, River," Maxxwell scolded when it was already the two of us.
A muscle in my jaw twitched. "Excuse me? I am not fawning. Will you stop feeling jealous? It does not sound romantic at all in my ears. Why don't we go?"
"What about me?"
Narrowing my eyes, I inquired, "What about you?"
He looked in the direction of the dead body. "When will you look at me like your master?"
"What did you say?"
"N-nothing," the alpha king grumbled. "We have to go. Stick to my side and don't get far away."
I scratched my head as I stared at his broad back. He said something earlier.
From the inside, the pack house was enormous and the more we dived deeper, the more we saw the bodies of women. I wanted to vomit all the food I had eaten.
We could see there were struggles. That they fought for their lives, but they were overpowered based on the blood found on their fingernails.
"What happened here?"
The alpha king crouched and inspected the dead bodies even further. "It's either someone betrayed the Riverside Pack or someone wanted revenge."
"Or someone does not like Master Raphael that led to this."
The alpha king heaved a sigh. "If what you are saying is true, it could be that the culprit is someone who found the women's safe house. Or someone who already knows the safe house location." I hugged myself. "What will William say?"
Maxxwell gave a half-shrug. "He will be furious. He will blame his son for what happened here. If Raphael is only responsible, it will not lead to this."
"Stop blaming Alpha Raphael. He did not want this to happen!"
Maxxwell gave me a pointed look. "If he only anticipated this would happen, there would be no death, River. Stop always siding with him even if it is his fault. You are only enabling him."
My eyes flooded with tears. I blamed my sensitivity to my pregnancy. "I just...feel sorry for him. We came here to visit the women, but we were greeted by dead bodies."
"It is good that we found them sooner than later. If we did not, scavengers would flock in this area and eat their carcasses."
I shivered at the thought.
He had a point there.
Wiping his hands, the alpha king stood and grabbed my arms. I wanted to pull my hands away, but he would never allow me. "Will you stop dragging me wherever you like? I do not like how you manhandled me, okay?"
Maxxwell raised a brow. "Nag all you want, but I will never allow you to get hurt. I want you to be safe at all times. Especially the baby."
My blood boiled.
"It's my baby, Maxxwell!"
Maxxwell growled, making me back away from him. "It's our baby, River."
"I said it's not yours," I pointed out. "Stop insisting it is yours."
His eyes flashed gold. "Bring me the man who you said is the father and I will rip off his throat in front of you. Give me evidence that the baby is not mine and I will allow you to do whatever you want." My mouth snapped shut. "You are mad. How could I bring the man down if you threatened him like that?"
Maxxwell's expression turned blank. "Is there really a man, River?"
I gulped. "You are scaring me."
I backed away, but Maxxwell sauntered towards me.
My heart hammered against my chest. Sweat formed on my forehead. "You did not answer my question. Is there a man beside me?"
Gathering my courage, I stopped and lifted my chin. "So what if I tell you if I have?"
I knew this was only foolishness (picking a fight with the powerful alpha king), but I also had to show him that I was not a coward.
Maxxwell looked up in the sky and let out a long howl.
Clutching my chest, I waited for him to stop.
"He will never see you again and his child. You will go with me."
"You cannot make me, Maxxwell. I will fight you until the end," I answered with enough conviction.
Foolishness, I knew. Saying that the baby was his was easy, but my pride would never let me. 2 "You will change your mind. Not now. But later."
