                    Looking Forward
I was planning on evading the alpha king as long as possible after what happened that morning in the dining room, but the servant kept pounding at my door in my chamber, saying I should take my breakfast. Which means I would be seeing the alpha king.
I constantly turned them down, saying I was still full, but when it was already the tenth servant calling me, I had no choice but to go there after being reminded that I hadn't eaten the beef stew and fruits after the alpha king had nearly eaten me first.
My cheeks flushed at the thought.
Dammit.
Why can't I forget about that stupid kiss? Did I like it? Definitely that I had forgotten I was supposed to be hating Maxxwell.
It's because you wanted it to repeat, another part of my mind said. You craved his presence and his lips. And his hardness against yours.
Stop! Those were no longer my thoughts!
I nibbled on my lips as I walked side by side with a servant.
I was afraid that my hate for him would eventually vanish, and what would my sister think of me? That I betrayed her?
"I am glad you stepped outside your room, Your Grace. His Highness wouldn't leave the dining room when you would not join him there.
"Why would he do that? Can't he eat alone?" I asked.
She tilted her head and answered, "He keeps telling us that you are carrying his child and that we should always tend to your needs, Your Grace. We should not allow you to go hungry, or he will punish all of us." The servant shivered in fear as if she suddenly imagined how the alpha king announced it. Maxxwell could be scary if he wanted to.
"What time is it?"
"Ten o'clock in the morning, Your Grace. His Highness is concerned for your whole being that he keeps ordering us to fetch you and force you to eat," she repeated. She gave me a look. "That is if it is needed. Please forgive us, Your Grace. All we wanted is for you and the baby to be safe. The servants are ecstatic that a baby will finally run in the hallways."
Suddenly, the thought of my child running while laughing flashed in my heart, warming my heart in the process.
However, when I was reminded I would not stay here any longer, the smile was wiped away from my eyes.
"Are you happy about it?"
The servant tilted her head and looked at me. "Beyond happy, Your Grace."
I nodded and continued following her. Then, we reached the dining room, and the alpha king's scent hit me first. As well as the alcohol from him. He did not even take a bath? Where was his personal servant? Uhm that is out of your business, River.
I looked around and saw the alpha king sitting casually while casually eating his food.
Talk about staying away from me. Maxxwell was nothing but a great liar.
The servant pulled out one chair and made me sit a few meters away from the alpha king.
I raised my brow.
Was I seeing this right? I thought he would insist that we would be sitting side by side.
It was not like I wanted it to be that way.
Not wanting to make a big deal out of it, I sat.
I closed my eyes at the smell of the savory scent of beef stew which I hadn't eaten earlier because of some mishap-nearly having sex with him.
From the corner of my eyes, Maxxwell continued eating as if he did not see me. Did he really follow my plea for him to stay far away from me? Why did I feel... disappointed?
My chest suddenly tightened at the thought, and I set them aside. There was no way I could be affected by these emotions.
The servants served some food and fruits on my plates even if it was no longer needed. I can do it on my own.
Well, he did not want to talk to me, fine. I would never force him.
I was silently eating my food when another presence entered.
"A pleasant morning, Your Highness and Your Grace."
I narrowed my eyes at Nora, who looked like she would be attending a party, then eating by her revealing clothes-her cleavage nearly popping out of her chest while her dress did not even pass her knee. If she were planning to seduce the alpha king wearing that, she would succeed.
A pang of jealousy hit me hard.
I stopped eating as I fisted on my spoon.
Why would I feel envy? It wasn't like I wanted the alpha king himself. No!
Hormones, River.
"What is pleasant in the morning, Nora?" I could not help but ask. "Did something good happen?"
Nora glanced at the alpha king, who was still silent, and back to me. I would think the alpha king did not exist if he continued being quiet like that.
"Nothing, Your Grace. It's just that I am happy that I could serve His Highness earlier."
I froze and narrowed my eyes at her. "I wonder what kind of service you give, Nora, that it made your mood good."
"Well..." she trailed off. She sat opposite me. "His Highness personally sees me in my chamber," she said proudly, lifting her chin.
"Good for you, then."
I tilted my head to look at the alpha king, but still, he went mute.
He was getting on my nerves! Why can't he say something to verify or contradict Nora's statement? He was drunk earlier. Did it mean something happened between them? Images of Nora writhing in pleasure while Maxxwell pounded at her resurfaced in my mind. It was wrong to think that way, but this raw anger against them was out of place. "Good for the two of you. I hope you enjoyed giving your service to the alpha king."
"Of course, Her Grace. I hope you do not mind. Oh. But didn't you know? I became the head concubine of His Highness. The pressure to bear another heir is heavily on my shoulder though I am not complaining, Your Highness. The pleasure is mine. I will give you anything you want."
"Will you continue your silence, Your Highness?" I asked when I no longer bear his silence.
Maxxwell glanced at me, then heaved a sigh.
"Nora's room was the first thing I reached when I was not feeling well earlier after drinking so much. I felt sick and vomited, and the woman was kind enough to help me."
Was he sick because of me? Did he feel repulsive kissing me?
His voice was bland as if he was tired of explaining to me.
"That is right, Your Grace." Nora was still smiling, and her smiling face sickened me to the core. How dare the two of them. "Nothing happened if that was what you were scared of. Though it would be better if something happened between us." Another laugh.
"How outspoken."
Nora shrugged her shoulders. "Life is too short, Your Grace. Someone will always try to snatch the alpha king's attention. I don't want to be left behind."
Were those words referring to me?
"If a person loves you, he will show his affection voluntarily."
The food tasted bland in my mouth.
Talking to them made me lose my interest in food.
Finishing the food on my plate and the fruits, I stood and was about to leave the room when Nora again opened her irritating mouth.
"Your Grace. Perhaps His Highness had forgotten to inform you. But Princess Leonora of the neighboring kingdom is planning to visit us. Again."
I gave Maxxwell a pointed look.
"You never told me about it, Your Highness." I did not know what she looked like though her name was familiar.
Does it matter? You keep telling him that you are only here temporarily and will leave when Alpha Raphael fixes the problems on the Riverside Pack.
Maxxwell was also done with his food. "I don't want you to be worried about it."
I raised my brows. "Tell me why I would be worried, Your Highness."
Nora chuckled all of a sudden. The alpha king and I shifted our gaze to her. "Oops. Sorry. It was not my intention to laugh, Your Grace."
This was suddenly getting my attention. "Tell me the reason for that," I pressed.
And why did she act like the alpha king, and she was suddenly too close for my liking? Why was she suddenly dining here? Usually, it was only Zenith, the beta, and the delta who would eat here. But never any other women.
"Nothing, Your Grace," she said with a chuckle while wiping the corner of her mouth.
"It is 'not' nothing, Nora. Spill."
She straightened herself while my heart was pounding fast.
"You see, Your Grace. After the Proclamation Ceremony, Princess Leonora suddenly started visiting the palace."
That happened after my absence?
And the alpha king had acknowledged it even after the deaths of my sister and the others? He already entertained and moved on with his life by accepting any woman.
My anger resurfaced, and the alpha king noticed the changes in my mood.
He was the most disgusting man of all.
My fist clenched as I gritted my teeth. "You should have kept your mouth shut, Nora." I stood.
"Princess Leonora is nothing but a child to me, River," the alpha king defended. "There is nothing to be bothered about it."
"I. Am. Not. Bothered."
It was no longer a surprise that the princess liked Maxxwell. Almost all the women wanted him because of his power and looks.
Nora was silently laughing in her mind. I knew it the moment I saw the wickedness in her eyes. She was only playing with me, but I could not stop myself from fighting back and buying it.
"If you say so," he said in defeat. "Princess Leonora will perhaps visit any day. I am asking you to grace her with your presence as she looked forward to meeting you, River."
I looked away and glanced at the awaiting door. "I won't. Nora can meet her. She is eager from the looks of it and like the princess very much. My presence is no longer needed."
I leave them while realizing I sounded like a jealous mate.
