"I am nothing but a servant to His Highness, Your Grace," I politely answered when the alpha king did not respond fast.
The princess doubted my statement. Which I did not care about.
However, as fast as I responded, that also had quickly the alpha king corrected me. "Your Grace. She is my mate. She is the queen of this kingdom."
The princess's beautiful hazel eyes flashed in anger. "Your mate? But I am your mate, Your Highness!" she exclaimed. "I told you that I am only your mate."
I raised one of my brows.
What kind of spell did Maxxwell have that women were swooning over him?
I should have kept my mouth shut, but I was contradicting myself. "I beg to disagree, Your Grace. You don't have a mark on your neck showing that the alpha king owned you."
Maxxwell gave me a satisfied look.
I scoffed at him.
"The mark will follow after," she answered, full of confidence.
Unfortunately for this woman, there would never be a third chance mate, only up to a second chance.
"It won't." Not unless I die, which would be happening for now.
"What are you? Why are you acting as if you owned His Highness?"
The servants looked away, not wanting to catch the princess' anger.
Why did almost every woman involved with the alpha king possessive of him?
"Your Grace. Her name is River. She is my mate," the alpha king insisted.
"That was before. But now, I am only his slave."
Princess Leonora wore a smug expression on her face. "Oh. I see."
The alpha king stepped forward and held the woman's hand. In an attempt to appease her? Probably. "River is my mate, Your Grace. She will be now and forever," the alpha king softly insisted. "No one will break our bond. No one can."
I felt those words were not for Princess Leonora but for me.
Eyes watering, Princess Leonora thought Maxxwell had betrayed her. "No. You are mine, Your Highness. I already told my father, the king, that I found the man I will spend the rest of my life with." Not wanting to say anymore, Maxxwell guided Princess Leonora instead. Inside.
The princess pouted; her anger evaporated when Maxxwell was giving him all his attention like that. "Now, now. Are you not tired of your journey coming here? Why don't you relax, Your Grace? My people had prepared a banquet for you and your people to signify our friendship."
"Next time, it will never be our friends that we will be celebrating but our marriage, Your Highness," she pressed further. "Not even your other mate will stop it."
Maxxwell only sighed, but his eyes showed he was worried about the princess's childish behavior.
I did hope she understood what she was saying.
Shaking my head, I followed the two love birds.
An arranged marriage between the two kingdoms would bring peace and prosperity to both. The princess will be good for Maxxwell, unlike me, who had nothing to offer except my chaotic family history. I stilled at the flow of my thoughts but moved again when Maxxwell tilted his head and glanced at me.
"Your Highness, I thought your mate had died after the Proclamation Ceremony. I never saw that woman before. The uncanny resemblance she had to the former queen is giving me goosebumps. It is like I am seeing the dead queen again. Well, except for her wild hair." 1
"Thank you for your compliment, Your Grace," I said, smiling but full of sarcasm. "Not all women liked my hair."
The princess only snickered and disregarded my presence. Just like Nora, the princess saw me as nothing but a threat, as if I wanted the alpha king for myself. Still, I find it thrilling to watch them threatened by my presence.
"I'm not talking to you," she replied with a sneer.
I glanced sideways and rolled my eyes.
A child. Immature. Good luck with Maxxwell. 1
Princess Leonora anchored her arms on the alpha king's biceps. "Your Highness, now that I am back in the palace, what do you want to do? With me?" Her voice was full of excitement. How I wished I could be happy like that. "I've been looking forward to this day. When I saw you during the Proclamation Ceremony, I knew that you would be the only one for me."
The alpha king scratched his forehead. "We will talk about your father's propositions of trading with us. That is also found in your letter, Your Grace. That is also the reason why I want to talk with you."
The kingdom had a massive number of agricultural products that were more than enough for the people's consumption. Trading it off to other products which we also needed would be beneficial.
The princess's face turned sour. "That can wait, Your Highness. It's not like I am always here. Except when I will be permanently living in the palace."
I slapped the back of my neck. Oh, great. If she lived here, the palace would be more insufferable.
"Talking about that topic is a pressing matter, Your Grace," the alpha king reminded.
"I don't want to. I was hoping you could show me around your kingdom. Let's go to places and watch the sun rise and set. That's so romantic, Your Highness." The princess leaned on the alpha king's shoulders. I think I am going to get sick just by watching them.
Worrying, the alpha king glanced in my direction, which I answered with a glare.
I did not come here to watch the princess showing affection.
"I am afraid I cannot do that, Your Grace. My queen needed me most since she is carrying our child."
Princess Leonara gasped and looked at me. "She is pregnant?"
"Yes, Your Grace. It does not really show as of the moment, but I am pregnant," I answered for Maxxwell. "Actually, you can have the alpha king as long as you want, Your Grace. I don't care anyway. Now, if you want to excuse me? I am getting tired. May I retire to my quarters?"
"You are having a child with Maxxwell? Answer me!" she demanded. Her voice cracked in the end.
Maxxwell.
First name basis already? And the alpha king allowed it?
"This is not the alpha king's child," I answered, letting her hear what she wanted badly.
I bit my lower lip when hurt registered in Maxxwell's eyes before he hid it again. I almost regretted lying straight in the princess's eyes because of his reaction. Still, I had to push through my lies. Maxxwell hurt me first, so it was only suitable to return the favor. 4
The princess was now all smiles.
"Your Highness, why are you still with this lying bitch? Isn't she your mate? Why is she carrying another man's child? You should punish her with death for what she had done."
And now she was accepting that we were mates?
I smiled sweetly at the princess. "I've been telling him about that. That I no longer deserved to be with him after what I did, but the alpha king still accepted me, Your Grace. I guess...that is what they call-love and foolishness."
"His Highness is the wisest of all kings!" Princess Leonora defended. "Take back what you said!" she screamed. "If not, I will punish you!"
The servants beside us moved slightly away.
"I don't want to, Your Grace."
"River," the alpha king recalled. His eyes told me he was displeased by my statement. Which means I did not care at all. "Do not make the princess upset. She is our visitor."
"She is your visitor, Your Highness. I am merely dragged here to welcome here even if I minded my world in my room."
"Stop," he ordered, his eyes glinting dangerously. It seemed like he was at the breaking point, and if I said something more, I would face the consequences of my actions.
When he sensed I would not say anymore, he said, "We will do whatever you want, Your Grace. But we should eat first. I am certain your men and servants are exhausted from the journey." Finally, we entered the dining hall.
The servants bowed upon spotting us.
My mouth watered at the different foods on the table-a feast for the visitors. Perhaps staying was not bad at all?
The alpha king guided Princess Leonora and grabbed a seat for her. He pulled another one, glanced at me, and urged me to approach them, which I did because of that food.
The other people entered the hall composing of the princess's servant, which was a male an unlikely sight since it was almost a protocol to have a female servant in every queen and princess.
The princess attendant also looked like a child but was handsome. Contrary to his master, the young man seemed kind.
After everyone had settled, the alpha king stood and said, "It is my pleasure to dine with one of the most beautiful princesses in all the kingdom."
The princess beamed, cheeks reddening. "The pleasure is all mine, Your Highness."
"With that, allow us to serve you with our humble preparations. My apologies if something does not satisfy you, and we are also willing to be corrected. Tell us everything you need, and we will supply it to the best of our abilities."
Putting on one of her best smiles, Princess Leonora whispered, "Everything is to my liking, Your Highness. Don't bother yourself anymore."
"Cheers for the prosperity and peace of the two kingdoms!" the alpha king's voice roared.
The men filled their cups with wine while mine was with juice, and they clicked their glasses together.
"Long live Vernice Kingdom! Long Live Ruinice Kingdom!"
"Listen, everyone. Today, I will personally be asking His Highness's hand in marriage. Step inside if you want to fight for His Highness's heart. But I will be using my position as one of the most powerful princesses in our kingdom to fight you."
The dining hall became eerily quiet.
All eyes shifted to Princess Leonora.
