Flower Garden
For a princess like Princess Leonora, who thought the world would always revolve around her, asking the alpha king's hand in marriage was a piece of cake.
It was bold of her. Did she like him so much that she was willing to be aggressive about it?
Something tugged my heart, and I suddenly felt bitterness.
Damn it.
Don't tell me I was jealous. Why would I?
Princess Leonora looked at us one by one while raising her hand.
"So...anyone who wants to say they do not like my statement? Or anyone who wants to object?"
I do! my mind said, but before I could blurt out those words, I bit my lower lips.
Her eyes shifted to me. "How about you, Your Grace?" There was sarcasm in his voice when she uttered the words Your Grace.
Not wanting to be shaken, I asked while nibbling on the watermelon.
"What do you want me to say, Your Grace? Are you certain you are prepared for what I will say?"
Looking at me with a stubborn look, she said, "That you won't get in my way. You don't love His Highness, right?"
I grabbed a napkin and wiped the corner of my mouth. At a distance, the twins were looking at me with worried expressions.
"Your Grace," the alpha king interjected. "I am certain it is only your emotion telling you that. There is no need to marry me."
"It is you I want, Your Highness. Taking back my words is already late. I want to marry you. And if we ever get married, this kingdom will be the strongest of all, especially when Father sends his troops to help you build your defense against your potential enemies. Marrying me will be one of the best decisions you will have, Your Highness," she answered proudly.
"Everyone. Why don't you continue eating?" Maxxwell suggested to the people. Perhaps to shift the focus aside from the princess.
"Your Grace. Why don't you set it first?"
"Say you will marry me, Your Highness."
She was indeed a spoiled brat.
"We will talk about that later, Your Grace. Let's eat first, shall we?"
Poor Maxxwell. Trapped in the presence of an immature child who believed she could push all her demands on anyone because she was a princess.
Princess Leonora shook her head. "I will get what I want, Your Highness. And right now, I want you," she stated with conviction. "No one will come in my way. Not even your mate."
She can have Maxxwell with all she wants.
I stood. "I'm getting tired, Your Highness. Please allow me to excuse myself. I want to rest in my chamber."
"You still haven't answered my question. You cannot go unless I am satisfied with your answer."
Princess Leonora's people continued eating, not wanting to meddle with the princess's affairs.
"May I know what gives you the right, Your Grace?" I asked. "Didn't you hear His Highness? I am the queen of this kingdom." The alpha king was satisfied with my answer. "I have the right to do whatever I want."
"You said you are a servant of the kingdom!"
"Isn't the king and queen's duty to serve their people? That is why I told you I am a servant," I added. "If you really want me to answer your question. Yes. I'm afraid I disagree with you asking the alpha king's hand in marriage. Our kingdom does not practice having two wives at the same time. The alpha king will only have one wife."
"You and the alpha king are not yet married."
"We will be," I answered with a straight lie. However, it did not sound like a lie.
"But the child you are carrying is not his! You tainted his reputation! That's not what a real mate should do!"
Maxxwell cleared his throat and held the princess's hand. "Your Grace. Why don't you sit and start eating?"
"Let her do whatever she wants, Your Highness." I smiled sweetly at the woman, which the latter did not appreciate at all. "I am only messing with you, Your Grace. My apologies for that," I answered with a smile. "The child is the alpha king's heir and not of another man. I'm not bold like that."
The alpha king glanced at me with relief.
Princess Leonora's face reddened. "You lie in front of the princess?"
"That's the point, Your Grace. You are the princess, while I am the queen of the kingdom. This kingdom. I can do and say whatever you want. So if you have plans on marrying the alpha king, remember that I am his mate. You cannot just ask the alpha king's hand without my approval."
"I will do what I want!" she demanded.
Damn. Arguing with this kid stressed me out.
"Go for it. But remember. I am his mate. His queen. His future wife and the mother of his child. Now. If you will excuse me."
I heard a light thud.
Titling my head, it was Princess Leonora already in her seat.
The twins heaved a sigh in relief.
The twins followed after me, but I held my hand when we stepped outside the dining hall. "I can manage myself. You don't have to follow me."
"We know you still hated us, Your Grace. We will wait until you learn how to forgive us." They bowed and left me alone.
The palace was becoming tiresome. For me.
I had nothing to do except turn down the alpha king's gifts daily. Sometimes a servant would bring me some flowers, candies, chocolates, cakes, fruits, and anything, but they would always go back with the gifts
in their hands.
Did it seem like I wanted those things? There was only one thing I wanted right now go back to Riverside Pack.
It would be better if Maxxwell would personally give it to me, a part of my mind said.
No!
That was not my thoughts. I hate Maxxwell that I never wanted to see his shadows.
"Your Highness. I received a message that my Father is coming here."
I froze and instantly hid in the corner of the flower garden. I thought I was the only one here.
I peeped while hiding in a big tree. Maxxwell would have a hard time sniffing my scent because of the flowers.
"May I know the reason, Your Grace?" The two were walking side by side. How sweet. Princess Leonora sure had transformed her visits into meaningful ones. "I thought you would be going back today? That's
based on what you said."
How long has it been since the princess was here? Roughly two days, and it already felt eternity. I asked the servant once when she would return, but the servant failed to give me a definite answer.
Princess Leonora jumped in front of the alpha king.
"I take it back, Your Highness. I want to spend my free time with you. You don't want to drive me away, don't you?" she asked, pouting.
Maxxwell scratched his head. "Your Grace. I don't want to sound rude, but there are still other matters which need my attention."
"Like what?"
"My people. The queen. They needed me."
"Are you telling me I am only bothering you, Your Highness? Do you prefer to be with the queen's company rather than mine?"
"It is not like that, Your Grace. Please understand that they also needed me."
Why did it feel as if those words comforted me?
No.
Princess Leonora's eyes watered. "No. You don't like me, Your Highness. How could you disregard my presence as easily as this? I will wage war on anyone if you give me your heart."
Desperate much? Despite my lie of not wanting the alpha king to be married to her, she would not stop insisting on herself.
"Leonora."
I sucked in a breath.
Maxxwell was calling her using her first name.
"I know you will finally call me like that. You finally listened to me, Your Highness."
"Stop being a child."
Confusion crossed the princess's eyes. "I don't understand what you are talking about."
"Your Father, the king, is waiting for your presence. We already talked that he is planning to marry you to someone else."
"If it is someone else, I would never allow it. Only you, Your Highness."
The alpha king heaved a sigh. "If it is true that your father is coming here, he will break it to you. Right now, before he will come."
"I will kill myself if he insists on forcing me to marry another man."
Suddenly, the alpha king stilled. "Don't take your life away lightly," he snapped.
Princess Leonora had seen the sudden change in his mood. "Your Highness. I want to ask something. I went back to our kingdom right before the Proclamation. Is it true that the former queen had taken her life?
That has been circulating around the servant's mouth-"
The alpha king growled at Princess Leonora.
Just before Maxxwell could attack the princess, I unhid myself and exclaimed, "Maxxwell! Stop!"
