War
"Who are you?" I asked. "Why did you follow the alpha king and the princess? Did someone hire you to kill them?" I continued.
The knife's edge was pressed more on my skin as if the bastard wanted me dead.
"Are you here to kill the two?"
If that was the case, that unknown person was giving me the pleasure of killing Maxxwell himself, but some part of me never wanted that to happen.
"You ask too much," he growled and breathed my neck.
Repulsed, I tried to attack him, but the dagger sank a little into my skin. The little stench of blood wafted through the air, making me dizzy.
Fuck it.
"See? I wouldn't hesitate to kill you."
"Why are you doing this?"
I should be fighting him or running away while I still could, doing something to distract him, but I wanted to extract more information from him.
"Just a random stranger who wanted something."
"Release me," I said, clenching my fist.
"I don't want to."
"Why did you lead me here?"
"I did not. You're some nosy woman who has curiosity ahead of her. You followed me first."
"Yes. Physically," I corrected. "Emotionally, yes. Don't you dare deny it. I am still furious about it."
Our conversation stopped when the sound of footsteps was heard across the alleyway.
When I whipped my head to the source, it was Princess Leonora with the alpha king. Her eyes widened upon seeing the stranger and me, and she unclutched herself from Maxxwell's arms and ran toward us.
"Brother!"
"Brother?" I inquired.
My gaze shifted at the two, and realization dawned on me. Right. That was why the stranger was familiar. It was because they had a strong resemblance to each other!
The stranger put down his cape and, not leaving my gaze, offered his arms for his sister's tight embrace.
"Princess Leonora. My beautiful sister. I missed you so much."
The two hugged again once more.
The alpha king nudged me. He was holding all the things the princess had brought.
Sweat broke down from his forehead.
If they brought another servant, he would not be sweating like that.
"Where have you been, River? You suddenly disappeared. You got me worried there. I nearly left the princess when I saw you were gone."
"You should focus on the princess, Maxxwell. She is possessive of you. No need to worry about me. I am perfectly well, Your Highness."
"Do that again, and I will ask Isagani to guard you."
I whisked my head in his direction. "Do that, and I will run away," I threatened. "You don't dictate my life."
"You think you can run away from me, River? Now that I have you in my place, I will never allow you to leave me again. Not with my child."
"Whatever, Maxxwell."
Beaming, the princess and the prince were done with their pleasantries and faced us. "Your Highness! I am excited that you will meet my brother. His name is Calixtro. He already knew about us."
Us?
Calixtro and Maxxwell were of the same height. The former was more like a prince. Handsome. Young. While Maxxwell was manly. Scary. Oozing with sex appeal.
The prince bowed. "My greetings, Your Highness."
"Earlier, this man followed you and the princess, Your Highness. I was curious about it and followed him. He drove me here in the alley."
Instead of getting angry at the prince, Maxxwell was more furious at me, which made the princess happy.
"I am not pleased about what you did, River. What if he is an enemy?"
I stared at him in disbelief. "We are on the same side for now, Your Highness. You should reprimand that man. Not me." I nearly got killed because of him!
"We will talk about that later." To the prince, he said, "Who are you again?"
"Prince Calixtro, at your service. On behalf of the king, he asked me to come after he received a letter from my sister, Your Highness." 1
"I thought Father would come?"
Prince Calixtro heaved a sigh. "He has a lot on his hands."
"Father is always busy. I'm afraid he could not even attend his daughter's wedding."
"Princess, that will never happen," the prince coaxed.
The princess scrunched her nose. "Let's not talk here, Your Highness. This place is stinky and dirty."
There was a pile of garbage on the side. I saw one where a rat jumped earlier. Too good the princess did not see it.
"Finally. I thought no one wanted to return him."
The alpha king prepared another banquet on behalf of the prince. The beta and delta were nowhere around. Not even Sir Elijah. Once again, I was compelled to join the banquet. There was also the alpha king's concubine, and Nora was wearing the most elegant dress she could ever have at the moment.
Nora was excited, and from the look in her eyes, she liked the prince-a lot.
I was playing with my food when the prince said, "Actually, I came here after my sister informed us that she is asking for your hand in marriage, Your Highness. Father wanted to go, but due to some internal
affairs, he asked me to go instead. I hope you don't mind me stalking the three of you earlier."
I straightened and stabbed a piece of watermelon and dank it into my mouth.
Some of the juices flowed out of my mouth, and I grabbed some cloth to wipe it.
Nora snickered watching me, and disgrace was written all over her face.
I rolled my eyes at her.
I never wanted to be here in the first place.
"Will you also ask for my forgiveness, Prince Calixtro? You stabbed me with your dagger earlier."
The alpha king slammed the table using his fist and glared at the prince. "He did that? That woman is the queen of this kingdom!" he growled.
The servants stiffened and backed away while I yawned, not minding the alpha king's outburst.
Why did the palace always have a lot of visitors now?
The prince cleared his throat while Princess Leonora held the alpha king's hand to try to appease the man.
She failed.
"I-I did not know about it, Your Highness. My apologies. She looked like a servant walking at your back. So I thought she was one. I did give her a little scare, but I had no intention of hurting her. After I read the
letter, I wanted to know what kind of person my sister had taken a liking to."
"Your sister had taken a liking to someone else's mate."
'Good job, River. Fight for your man.'
I was not doing this to defend or help, Maxxwell. I just wanted to stop anyone from coming here. It was getting tiresome meeting different kinds of people.
'He is not mine. Not anymore."
"Whose mate is that?"
I raised my hand. "Mine. The princess wanted my property."
The hall became silent.
The prince gave me a weird stare as if I uttered something funny.
"How much?"
"Excuse me?"
Prince Calixtro dropped his glass and looked at me. "I am asking how much our kingdom will pay for my sister to marry the alpha king. Provided with your permission, of course. Name your price, Your Grace."
I put both of my hands on the table.
"Now I am Your Grace in your mouth because you wanted something from me. Can I also say that toletartong the princess's spoiled behavior will only bring her more harm than good?"
The prince grabbed the knife and chopped off some piece of meat on his plate.
"Our kingdom allows having two wives or two husbands. Even if you two are married, His Highness can also be married twice."
"Why do we have to conform to your traditions? The alpha king is not for sale. He is mine alone," I said possessively. "And stop taking away the father of my child."
"A child?" Prince Calixtro's eyes darted on my flat belly. "You have a child. Indeed. Sister. You never told me about this."
"I want His Highness, brother!"
"If you say so."
Sunflower gave me a thumbs up. Or it looked like one while the alpha king was satisfied and letting me take charge of the situation.
Everything was a lie.
I just said those words so these two will stop pestering the alpha king.
"You won't give way? I'm afraid, our kingdom will have to wage war on yours to take the alpha king away."
