That Evening in the Balcony
"W-what are you doing, M-Maxxwell?" I asked. This was wrong. But my body...I liked the feeling of this. I craved this. Craved for his touch and everything he could offer. But the rational part of me rejected this
act.
I felt his hardness pressed against mine-especially his shaft on my butt.
Delicious.
I closed my eyes for a moment.
Damn it. Was this the effect of denying myself from his sinful touch?
I was not asking for this. As if taunting me, Maxxwell rubbed his heavy erection on my butt making me moan.
I clenched my fist as pressure started to gather and settled down there. It was already wet. My undergarments were. And my arousal because of what he was doing wafted through the air.
Fuck. Why was I embarrassing myself? I should go and run away from this sinful man, but my legs wouldn't allow me. It continued to become stubborn and wanted to savor this moment which rarely happens
between us.
I want him.
I stiffened when he sniffed my hair and sank his fingers into my crown. Did he sniff my hair and caress my flat stomach?
Oh, Moon Goddess.
"I love your hair, River. It reminded me of you. This is one of the most beautiful hairs I encountered. Don't cut it short."
Oh, gosh.
This was one of Maxxwell's sides that left me off guard. This was not like him. He was suddenly being honest. But why? Why now when I was at my lowest?
"Why are you doing this?" Did I ask that question earlier? I already forgot. The alpha king had that effect on me.
"Hugging you, of course. Can't you see?" he chuckled and repeatedly sniffed my hair.
I fucking love what he was doing. And he knows it. He could feel it in our bond if that was possible. And boy. He was doing that to his advantage.
I breathed deeply. Gather your thoughts, River. Do not fall into his trap. "You don't need to be sarcastic. Move away."
Instead of obeying me, he tightened his hug, nearly stopping the air from flowing into my lungs.
"Let me stay like this. Even for a moment. Because the next time, you will not allow me to hug you like this. What shampoo are you using? I want to use the same. It feels nice, my Queen."
I lay still. "I-I...just random shampoo available in my chamber."
"Tell me the specific scent."
"I...don't remember, okay?" A particular part of me wanted to push him away, but another part of me wanted to feel the alpha king's warmth. And pretend that he was the same man I loved before the man whom I thought would be my
mate for life. No matter what happens, we will always have each other's back.
Until tragedy befalls us.
I closed my eyes, fighting back my tears. Why did it happen between us? Why? When I suddenly chose happiness, why did life become a bitch and hurt me this much?
"Y-you can let me go now," I managed to say after a couple of minutes. "This feels so wrong," I muttered.
This felt right. We were mates before and we could still fix the severe bond if I chose to.
Maxxwell shivered against my touch. "Stop wriggling like that. You are only giving me a boner."
I did stop. To stop creating more problems at hand. "Maxxwell."
"Hmm? I wish time would stop for us," he whispered, but let me go. Stepping away from me, he stood a little farther away from me and heaved a sigh-a long one. I missed our connection.
I cleared my throat while fixing myself. Letting my guard down in front of my enemy was foolishness.
"Tell me if you want to return to your quarters, my Queen, and I will bring you there. Walking alone could be dangerous, especially at this hour. We cannot let our guard down."
He had a point. Enemies could be lurking somewhere.
"I... let me stay here for a moment. The view is breathtaking."
The alpha king chuckled. "There is nothing to see but darkness, River."
"I like the dark. It calmed me. Sometimes. With this kind of darkness, my nightmares will not get me."
"Nightmares," Maxxwell mumbled to himself. "Do you get those?"
"Every single night. About my sister. Blood. Death. Erik and everything that happened. If...if the nightmares persist, I would not be sleeping until morning came."
"I'm...sorry for what happened."
"You should be. You should be sorry for as long as you live. I should not be the only one hurting."
He pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. "Do you mind?" he asked, referring to himself smoking.
"You try, and I will drop all your cigarettes out off the balcony."
He chuckled. "Geez. Hot-headed as always."
Putting one of my hands on my hips and facing him, I muttered, "May I remind you that we are not yet friends."
"River. You don't always have to ruin the mood, okay?"
"I will do what I want."
He put the cigarettes back. "Stubborn."
"Bastard."
"Whatever you say about me, I will accept it, River. I deserved that. Call me anything I want. There is one thing I wanted to ask you."
Is the alpha king asking for something? It was a rare scenario.
"What is that? But do not think I will give it to you because you are the alpha king."
"I know."
"Tell me what you want."
"If you are mad at me, please don't allow my people to see it. They might lose their respect."
"It was their fear of you which made them respect you, Maxxwell. None other else."
Fear could be someone's instrument while the others' demise.
"I will say whatever I say, Maxxwell. Whether I have my audience or not," she said with conviction. 2
The morning flew faster than I could imagine. It was already late when I hopped out of bed. Groggily, I did what I had to do before I stepped out of my chamber and went to the kitchen.
What time was it again?
Nine in the morning?
Damn. The alpha king knew how to occupy me while we talked in his chamber as if we were both catching up.
We did not.
He insisted on saying I should stay a little longer and that he would walk with me back to my chamber.
We talked but nothing out of the ordinary. The palace. The servants and everything under the sun except my sister. It seemed like it was an unwritten rule between us that no one should mention Zenith's name,
or it would ruin the mood.
Yawning, I groggily dragged my feet then a female servant approached me.
"Miss River. His Highness has instructed us to cater to your needs."
Hugging my clothes closer to my body, I asked, "Where is he?"
"He is outside. Princess Leonora and his brother are scheduled to return to their kingdom."
Temporarily forgetting my hunger, I changed my direction and went outside instead.
I thought they would be returning this afternoon.
True to the female's words, the alpha king was there, hugging the princess. No. It was more like the princess was hugging him instead, and out of respect, the alpha king patted the woman's back before they
pulled away from each other.
I put all the memories of what happened last night in the deepest part of my mind.
Upon sensing me, the princess and her brother's eyes crossed my direction.
Taunting them, my smiles were from ear to ear.
Too good that I made myself presentable before coming here.
Princess Leonora looked respectable and regal with her brother beside her.
"A pleasant morning, Princess Leonora. Prince Calixtro."
The princess's mood turned sour. "It was pleasant earlier. But not anymore when you came here. I thought you had your beauty rest."
"Oh. Not anymore. I want to say goodbyes."
"No need. The alpha king is enough." Her eyes softened when she faced Maxxwell. "Your Highness. I hope you will still welcome us if we want to revisit you."
The alpha king's expression turned as if he was going to pee on his pants. "That's..."
"Will you continue to deny my sister's request, Your Highness?" Prince Calixtro suddenly butted in. "When we return, the king will know how you treated us during our stay here. You don't want to anger our
Father, I tell you."
How dare this bastard Calixtro threaten the alpha king in his own kingdom? And why was Maxxwell hesitating? Was he seriously considering the princess's feelings? Did he like her?
Glaring at the prince, I answered, "His Highness was nothing but sweet to me, brother. You are greatly mistaken about your judgments of him."
Why did the direction of the wind suddenly shift?
"I will admit that I was mistaken if I see it was my mistake. But right now, it was not my mistake. Pushing us to go back was already bad enough, Sister. Are you sure you wanted him?"
"I am confident that I want no one but His Highness, brother," she said with convection. "The next time we come back here, I will be bringing a priest to officiate our wedding."
